2. Authentic Practice
Rather than learning about PowerPoint itself (yawn), we’ll be
using PowerPoint authentically to create a slideshow as we
learn another goal of this week: Social Media
We’ll also be using recent news and videos to give the latest
and real-world updates on Social Media.
Just something to consider in your own teaching some day!
3. Social Media
If you’re between 8 and 18, you’re spending more than 11
hours a day plugged into an electronic device.
One common outlet is social media, and its changing the way
your generation socializes, dates, studies, works and plays.
Pros: You can connect with new friends and old, solve what
used to be complex problems, create a ‘brand’ for yourself
that can be useful in your career, etc.
Cons: A single mistake can be made hugely public, private
images and conversations can be published around the
world, bullies, stalkers and hackers, etc.
7. Snapchat
Snapchat is a video messaging application created by 3
students at Stanford University students.
Using the application, users can take photos, record videos,
add text and drawings, and send them to a controlled list of
recipients. These sent photographs and videos are known as
"Snaps".
Users set a time limit for how long recipients can view their
Snaps (as of March 2015, the range is from 1 to 10 seconds),
after which they will be deleted from Snapchat's servers.
“Snapchat isn’t about capturing the traditional Kodak moment.
It’s about communicating with the full range of human emotion --
not just what appears to be pretty or perfect”.
8. Snapchat issues
People would take screenshots so the images didn’t really
disappear.
Snapchat now notifies you if screenshot is taken
Now using 2nd device to capture
Also used for good:
Possibly prevented a high school shooting last week here in
Phoenix…
13. Legal Bans on Revenge Porn
Between March and June of this year, Google, Reddit,
Twitter, Facebook, etc have all banned it and its removed
immediately.
Outlawed in growing number of countries (United Kingdom,
New Zealand, Australia, France, Germany, half the US
states), with prison sentences up to 18 years so far.
Included now in ‘social media prenuptual agreements’, to ‘not
share photos or posts that may harm a spouse’s reputation.’
14. When Professional and Social
Networks Blend… you’re LinkedIn
LinkedIn reports more than 364 million acquired users in
more than 200 countries and territories.
Allows users to create profiles and "connections" to each
other in an online social network which may represent real-
world professional relationships.
Includes online recruiting, job postings, publishing, and
endorsements
Suggests connections and job openings related to your
expertise
