This paper discusses the evolution of storage area networks (SAN) in the context of data center infrastructure, focusing on the comparison between Fibre Channel (FC) and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) technologies. It highlights the advantages of FCoE, such as reduced costs and increased scalability by merging LAN and SAN traffic into a single network, while also addressing the importance of various storage solutions including Direct Attached Storage (DAS), Network Attached Storage (NAS), and Just a Bunch of Disks (JBOD). The study utilizes Cisco platforms to implement and explore the features of both technologies, guiding SAN engineers in selecting the optimal solution for performance and management.
