Influencing policy (training slides from Fast Track Impact)
Uni1 task 5
1. You have been asked to investigate learning styles and produce a report
style Blog post explaining how an awareness of ones preferred style can
improve an individual’s ability to learn and progress.
There are a wide variety of learning styles with different people being good at
different learning styles, the ability to improve your learning but also progress
from that can be the difference between an A grade or a B grade. Thus saying
all of this everyone do not know what learning style helps them and thus they
get confused on how to revise for example some people just read and pick it
up immediately however not everyone is like this so they need other methods
of learning in order to learn, these learning styles are
Learning styles Learning activities
Aural You learn best through music and
sound
Visual You like to see images, pictures and
demonstrations
Physical Practical activities such as model
making, using a computer, making
finished products
Logical Mathematical reasoning, following
step by step instructions
Verbal You learn through hearing or reading
words
Solitary You prefer to learn on your own
Social You prefer to learn with others
Visual
Many people learn best with seeing images, pictures and teachers presenting
their work through PowerPoint presentation. Visual learners need to have
work that is presented with pictures or diagrams as this helps them learn more
efficiently. If however they where just being constantly provided with
information by the teacher they would not learn anything as there are no
visual things for them to see and interpret the information being given to them.
2. Physical
If the physical style is more like you, it's likely that you use your body and
sense of touch to learn about the world around you. It's likely you like sports
and exercise. You like to think out issues, ideas and problems while you
exercise. You would rather go for a run or walk if something is bothering you,
rather than sitting at home. Also physical learners don’t like sitting in a
classroom with a teacher teaching them about the subject, they need to be
interacting with other things that relate to the subject for example in science
there tends to be a lot of experiment so this will help a physical learner as
they are learning by doing things.
Verbal
The verbal style involves both the written and spoken word. If you use this
style, you find it easy to express yourself, both in writing and verbally. You like
playing on the meaning or sound of words, such as in tongue twisters, rhymes
and limericks. You know the meaning of many words, and regularly make an
effort to find the meaning of new words. You use these words, as well as
phrases you have picked up recently when talking to others.
Which learning style best fits me
When you know which learning style best fits you it can make your life through
education a lot easier because you will be able to pick up on things much
quicker, I mainly have two learning styles, the fist being visual this is because
if a teacher talks about a particular topic but gives images and pictures about
that topic I am able to remember what he or she has said due to me
remembering the pictures and then relating it to what the teacher has told me.
My second is solitary this is learning style is what I use at home, it allows me
to just get on with whatever work I am doing without no distractions
whatsoever, I mainly just read and read and read about whatever subject I am
revising for.
