Uniformitarianism is the geological principle that the natural processes seen today also occurred in the past. For example, weathering, erosion, deposition, earthquakes and volcanoes happened in the past just as they do today. The processes that layer sedimentary rocks today through weathering, erosion and deposition were also at work in the distant past.
