The UK risks falling behind other countries in cloud computing adoption due to data security concerns. Almost a quarter of UK businesses failed to implement cloud systems in the last two years, compared to a global average of 14%. While 36% of UK firms have adopted cloud technology, 30% say they will never move major data to the cloud. Many UK decision makers have concerns over data protection and regulations, which 31% say significantly impacts cloud adoption, while 29% say it slows adoption. Financial, petrochemical and healthcare industries are most affected by these issues. Despite concerns, cloud adoption has increased 31% in the US, Canada and Singapore, 25% in Japan, and 18% in Hong Kong and Nordic countries. Firms
Captains of Industry Survey February 2019: Business and InfrastructureIpsos UK

• 61% of Captains of Industry rate the country’s digital infrastructure negatively; 38% are positive
• They put digital infrastructure at the top of their investment wish list (this is a low priority for the public)
• Captains prioritise this despite being satisfied with their company’s broadband, and more satisfied than the public
• A majority agree that all parts of the UK should have equal access to broadband internet, but this group are most resistant than supportive of the idea of paying to ensure that businesses in rural areas have the same quality of access

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

UK Risks Falling Behind Others in Cloud
Adoption Due to Data Security Concerns
Almost a quarter of UK businesses (22 per cent) have failed to
implement a cloud computing system within the last two years,
ahead of the global average of 14 per cent.
Despite 36 per cent of firms having implemented the technology, a
similar number (30 per cent) claimed that they will never move their
major data to to such a system, with the Nordic region being the
only one higher.
2. Many decision makers in the UK have admitted that concerns remain
over the issue of data protection, as well as legislation and regulation,
with these reasons being cited by 31 per cent of UK firms as having a
significant impact on the adoption of cloud services, while another 29
per cent said that it had slowed adoption "to some extent".
Among the industries that are the most affected by these issues are
Financial Services (36 per cent), Petrochemicals (39 per cent) and
Healthcare (27 per cent).
3. Despite the suspicions surrounding cloud adoption, it has still managed
to make significant gains over the course of the last two years, with
gains in the UK being followed by a 31 per cent increase in deployment
in the USA,Canada and Singapore, 25 per cent in Japan, and 18 per
cent in Hong Kong and the Nordics.
There is evidence to suggest that there are some great financial
advantages to be had by adopting the cloud, with 40 per cent of British
firms using such an approach seeing a 23 per cent increase in their
profits.
4. Meanwhile, the USA and Canada are the most enthusiastic about the
adoption of the cloud, with a total of 28 per cent of companies claiming
to have moved a majority of data and services to these new systems.
The USA also stands out when it comes to innovations in such
technology, with over half (59 per cent) actively seeking out and
experimenting with new and emerging technologies.
