Reading to Kids (R2K)
Saturday Reading Club
Saturday, Nov 9th
Support our community and help some great kids get excited about reading
and college at the Reading to Kids (R2K) Saturday Reading Club!
R2K is dedicated to inspiring underserved children with a love of reading.
They coordinate reading clubs at elementary schools in downtown Los Angeles
where volunteers read aloud to children and create arts and crafts projects about
the stories. Each child receives a book to take home and the books read aloud are
donated to the school’s library. Reading aloud to children imparts a love of books
that leads to improved literacy, to a more successful education,
and to a brighter future.
College Spirit Day!
Each year R2K organizes College Spirit Day to encourage students to think about
college. Early exposure will instill a sense of excitement and anticipation. It is
particularly important for the kids in these schools to hear about college because
many of the R2K students will be the very first in their families to seek a higher
education. Please wear your Bruin Gear! We will have the opportunity to talk with the
kids about UCLA and our experiences there. Parents who attend will also receive
information about financial aid and planning for college from R2K (not us!).
Volunteers often meet for lunch at El Cholo on Western Avenue after the reading
clubs for complimentary appetizers. Volunteers, please visit www.readingtokids.org
where you’ll need to register and RSVP. Please sign up for Alta Loma Elementary
School and select UCLA Spirit as your volunteer group affiliation.
*An RSVP on BruinWorks or Facebook will not reserve your space*
Sign up is first-come, first served. Please sign up early!
You may register after October 14, 2013.

New Bruin Send-Off Party
The Westside & South Bay Network co-hosted a Bruin Beach Party at Ocean Park
Beach on Sunday, Sept. 8th, to welcome our incoming students to the Bruin Family.
Students taking a moment to smile
for the camera.
Incoming freshman Rebecca wins a
pair of blue & gold TOMS!
Westside Network scholarship
recipient Alan Grusky.
Beach volleyball!
It was a day filled with students, family, friends, and
it was an absolute blast!
In addition to a few rounds of beach volleyball, we
also raffled off some UCLA swag and a donated pair
of TOMS UCLA Campus Classics.
The best part was watching our new students lead us
through an 8-clap lead by incoming freshman Brian.
We look forward to hosting another Send-Off party
again next year.
