3. December Solicitation Summary
As you may have noticed, we posted about the Westside Network’s scholarship fund
in social media a lot in December. Our primary purpose was to raise awareness of our
fund, and hopefully to secure some donations as well. The good news is that we did
secure a handful of donations.
***Shout out to all that donated in December! Thank you cards are on their way.***
Last month was also the beginning of our uphill climb towards our fundraising goal.
Our goal is to get to endowment by the end of this year. To get to the initial endowment level, our scholarship fund needs to have a minimum of $100,000. Where are we
at now? Including the money we raised in December we currently have $2,404.13 in our
scholarship fund.
We have a loooong way to go. And we need your help to get there. So we wanted you
to know that there are plenty of ways that you can help.
Give your time! Take a few minutes the next time you go to Ralphs to register your
Rewards Card with our scholarship. The Community Rewards Program at Ralphs will
donate a portion of your eligible purchase when you connect your Rewards Card to our
scholarship fund (#90758, UCLA Foundation – Alumni Scholarhsips). You can also register online using the instructions at the end of this newsletter.
Give your talent! Join the Westside Network Fundraising Committee to help us reach
our goal. We have a core group of folks who are executing our strategy to raise funds,
and we can always use more hands to help out. You can email Brandie Barerra,
BrandieBarrera@alumni.ucla.edu if you are interested.
Give your treasure! Donate directly to our scholarship fund at http://www.giving.ucla.
edu/WestsideNetwork. Your donations are 100% tax-deductible! Then go tell your
friends to do the same. We look forward to working together to reach this goal. We
promise to keep you posted on our progress along the way.

4. Alumnus Robert Ketchum’s
Work On Display In
Venice Beach
Jan 14th - Mar 2nd
Alumnus Robert Ketchum’s work is on
display in Venice beach. Catch the latest exhibits of an esteemed alumnus,
who according to the Huffington Post
is, “…our generation’s Ansel Adams”.
Mr. Ketchum has been acknowledged
by Audubon magazine as one of the
100 people “…who shaped the environmental movement of the 20th
century.”
He is one of only five artists recognized by American Photo’s “American
Masters” series, sharing the company
of Annie Leibovitz. Mr. Ketchum’s truly
breathtaking nature photography will
be exhibited at the G2 Gallery in Venice Beach from January 14 - March 2.
Fun fact - Mr. Ketchum is a third
generation Bruin whose father
was captain of the basketball team
under coach John Wooden, and
played when UCLA first triumphed
over Cal and USC.

January 23rd at Olympic Collection
Conference and Banquet Center.
In addition to hearing this True Bruin’s
story, this event also includes light

opportunity drawing. A portion of
the proceeds from this event will go
towards our scholarship fund.
We are also pleased to announce that
Bruin Varsity Club has generously donated items to our silent auction. All
proceeds from the silent auction will
go towards our scholarship fund.

how do we write these stories for
other people? How do we make them
care about our stories, our voice, and
our message?

a diverse panel of writing professionals who will share their experiences

8. Young Alumni Basketball Event
UCLA Bruins vs Oregon State Beavers
Sunday, Mar. 2nd | 4:00 PM
The UCLA Alumni Los Angeles Westside Network is hosting a group trip to the last
basketball home game for the 2013-2014 season, exclusively for the Young Alumni
(class of 2003-2013).
Young Alumni will receive a lower level seat at Pauley Pavilion with the rest of the
group (a $102 value) right next to the band and current students in section 122.
Included in the ticket price is a two hour pregame buffet featuring an open bar in the
Press Room of the Hall of Fame.
Expect appearances by former UCLA Men’s Basketball players to mingle with the
group prior to the game. Space is limited, so reserve your seats now. All guests should
be UCLA Alumni. Register for this event on BruinWorks.
A buffet will be provided to all Young Alumni in attendance that includes:
- BBQ pulled pork sliders, buffalo wings, chips & guacamole
- Caesar chicken salad, cookies & brownies

9. Young Alumni Ugly Sweater
Happy Hour Recap
Kenny Booker makes a surprise visit
On December 19, 2013, members of the Westside Network gathered for a happy hour at
Brick + Mortar in Santa Monica. We had a wonderful turn-out and lots of fun, 64
people signed in (biggest happy hour yet). Former UCLA basketball player Kenny
Booker, who played under Coach Wooden during his final season, stopped by for a visit.
We hope you will make it out to future happy hour and viewing parties. Look for dates

Sun Bowl
Football Viewing Party Recap
On New Year’s Eve morning the Westside Network took over Rivalry Sports Bar &
Grill in Mid-City Los Angeles for a Sun Bowl viewing party. Rivalry is a new Bruinowned establishment that has been beautifully renovated and features twenty-six
televisions and an amazing menu. Just imagine the scene – Bruins everywhere, all
TVs tuned into the Sun Bowl, a premium sound system, and a custom menu just for
us! Did I even have an original national championship banner that used to hang in
Pauley Pavilion hanging in their restaurant? The only thing better than the venue
itself was the BIG WIN over Virginia Tech. Go Bruins!! We were proud to partner with
Rivalry for this event, and we are looking forward to future viewing parties there!
