Google tasked UCLA researchers with recommending ways to use technology to combat human trafficking. The researchers explored domestic minor sex and labor trafficking in high-intensity areas across the US. They collected new data on gaps and needs from multiple sectors. Larry Magid discusses the evolution of approaches to online safety. Early approaches in the 1990s focused on protecting children from pornography and predators online (Safety 1.0). Later approaches recognized risks from peers, such as cyberbullying (Safety 2.0). However, Magid argues for a new approach called Safety 3.0 that is research-based, respects youth agency, and focuses on empowerment. Safety 3.0 teaches media literacy, citizenship, and critical thinking; views youth as stakeholders rather than just victims; and promotes safety for good outcomes rather than just from bad outcomes. Magid advocates moving past fear-based approaches to online safety education.

She discussed how they allow for non-threatening experiential learning, social experimentation, role play, and identity exploration to help prepare students culturally. Examples included using a virtual world to orient students to a short-term trip to Nicaragua or allowing international students to collaborate in a virtual case study. Truman suggested immersive environments could enrich orientation by allowing students to grasp foreign cultures through simulated interactions and experiences to better understand social norms and safety abroad.

Columbia Worldwide Mental Health Awareness
This document describes a nine-country pilot study conducted from 2004-2005 to raise awareness of child mental health issues. The study involved administering pre- and post-awareness surveys to students, parents, and teachers in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, China, Egypt, Georgia, Israel, Russia, and Uganda. Manuals were developed to guide the implementation of awareness campaigns based on accurate information about signs and symptoms of child mental health problems. Baseline surveys assessed awareness levels and attitudes as well as prevalence of behavioral and emotional problems. Sites then conducted awareness campaigns followed by post-surveys to evaluate the impact. The goal was to promote recognition of issues while avoiding unrealistic expectations of services.

Young children now spend significant time with digital media each day. Television remains the dominant medium that children engage with, despite having more access to devices like smartphones, tablets, and video games. However, not all children have equal access to technologies due to socioeconomic factors. Younger children primarily use mobile devices for entertainment purposes like games and videos, while those around age 8 begin exploring a wider variety of media beyond just television.

Crowdfunding has become a hot topic for many development professionals in the United States, accounting for $2.7 billion dollars raised in 2012. Estimates for 2013 were even higher.
It appeals to many fundraisers because it leverages the social networks of donors to generate funding for projects and organizations. With the proliferation of crowdfunding sites and the recent success of campaigns on platforms like KickStarter and IndieGoGo, development programs in higher education are beginning to take notice.
Questions persist about how the platform translates to fundraising in higher education and if it has the potential to become a sustainable addition to the tool kit of annual giving programs.

End-to-end pipeline agility - Berlin Buzzwords 2024
We describe how we achieve high change agility in data engineering by eliminating the fear of breaking downstream data pipelines through end-to-end pipeline testing, and by using schema metaprogramming to safely eliminate boilerplate involved in changes that affect whole pipelines.
A quick poll on agility in changing pipelines from end to end indicated a huge span in capabilities. For the question "How long time does it take for all downstream pipelines to be adapted to an upstream change," the median response was 6 months, but some respondents could do it in less than a day. When quantitative data engineering differences between the best and worst are measured, the span is often 100x-1000x, sometimes even more.
A long time ago, we suffered at Spotify from fear of changing pipelines due to not knowing what the impact might be downstream. We made plans for a technical solution to test pipelines end-to-end to mitigate that fear, but the effort failed for cultural reasons. We eventually solved this challenge, but in a different context. In this presentation we will describe how we test full pipelines effectively by manipulating workflow orchestration, which enables us to make changes in pipelines without fear of breaking downstream.
Making schema changes that affect many jobs also involves a lot of toil and boilerplate. Using schema-on-read mitigates some of it, but has drawbacks since it makes it more difficult to detect errors early. We will describe how we have rejected this tradeoff by applying schema metaprogramming, eliminating boilerplate but keeping the protection of static typing, thereby further improving agility to quickly modify data pipelines without fear.

In these slides, we discuss how LinkedIn implements a powerful dynamic policy enforcement engine, called ViewShift, and integrates it within its data lake. We show the query engine architecture and how catalog implementations can automatically route table resolutions to compliance-enforcing SQL views. Such views have a set of very interesting properties: (1) They are auto-generated from declarative data annotations. (2) They respect user-level consent and preferences (3) They are context-aware, encoding a different set of transformations for different use cases (4) They are portable; while the SQL logic is only implemented in one SQL dialect, it is accessible in all engines.
