From “Dumb” To “Smart” Ingrediënts for a Smart CityErik Van Der Zee
More and more cities in the world want to become a SMART city. But what is actually a smart city? How do I transform a city in a smart city? And what is the relationship between the smart city concept and other concepts like Internet of Things and Big Data? Erik van der Zee tries to answer these questions during this session. He also pays attention to the Geonovum pilot Making Sense for Society. This pilot started on 3rd April 2014 and comprises subjects like sensors, actuators, standards, real-time data, privacy, governance and applications related to smart cities.
Presentation at the Government and ICT fair on 9th April 2014.

“Rapid Iteration for an Internet of Things – Tempo Automation”
Presented Wednesday, July 10, 2013
As rapidly as the fastest growing platform shifted from desktop to mobile, mobile itself now finds the attention shifting to a highly-diverse plethora of devices that are carried, worn, and used in brand new ways. New devices and ecosystems are emerging in entirely new form factors. Because their impact is often based on scale of use, device prototypers are now in need of ways to rapidly produce prototypes at scale. In short, this means rapidly iterating the Internet of Things.
Many fields already benefit from high speed iteration that scales – Lean Startup for business, Agile for software, and 3D printing for mechanical design. Tempo Automation has now developed a robot that brings this capability to electronics.
The current options for making low volumes of circuit boards are unattractive, to put it mildly. Either wait weeks to get a board back from a board house, or strain your fine motor skills trying to build multiple boards yourself. Tempo Automation aims to fix this problem with “Electronics Factory”, a reliable, easy to use, desktop robot. Think “MakerBot”, but optimized for electronics. The objective is to provide a robot that etch traces, applies solder paste, places components, reflows, and even tests. Tempo Automation releases each of these capabilities as they become available.
Our presenters, Co-founder and CEO Jeff McAlvay and Co-founder and CTO Markus Rokitta, will demo the latest production unit, and describe how rapid iteration will transform not only the startup landscape, but advance the impact of the emerging realm of things that generate and report connected data.
Jeff McAlvay, Co-founder and CEO, Tempo Automation (http://tempoautomation.com/). Previously, Jeff worked in industrial supply company McMaster-Carr’s leadership development program. There, his roles included warehouse operations design, sales, and product management. He currently runs the Bay Area Factory Tours Meetup group, and coordinates office hours that connect hardware startups with industry experts.
Markus Rokitta, PhD; Co-founder and CTO, Tempo Automation.
Markus received his PhD in Engineering from the University of Queensland in Australia. Since then, he has designed and manufactured a small form-factor MRI machine and has managed medical device programs at companies including Carl Zeiss and BIT Analytic Instruments, in countries including the US, Germany, and China.

User Innovation for the Internet of Things | Gerd KortuemGerd Kortuem
The importance of user innovation is widely accepted, but the development of the Internet of Things is primarily driven by large commercial players. Using an innovation perspective, this paper identifies how user innovation and market-based innovation can be combined by creating user- centered ecosystems that are open for and provide incentives for end-user innovation. An investigation of the smart-home domain is used to identify challenges for the realization of user-centered ecosystems for the Internet of Things.

Abstract:

In the Web of Things initiative, we propose to make smart things first-class citizens of the World Wide Web. This allows to apply widely used Web mechanisms (bookmarking, browsing,...) to things and to use physical devices just like any other service on the Web. In the talk, some of the prototypes that we have been building in our lab are presented. We also ask what will be the "next big thing" in connecting and mashing up real-time, real-world services.
[DevDay2019] Internet of Things- By: Dr. Anand Nayyar at Duy Tan UniversityDevDay.org
In this lecture, he will start by elaborating the term “Internet of Things” along with current technological trends which has led to IoT, define the impact of IoT on Society making a strong base for Smart Cities, Industries- Transforming into Industry 4.0, Medical IoT as well as Future transformations in IoT.
The quest for realizing Smart Environments has taken place for the last 30 years. Diverse adaptations of the original UbiComp vision have been developed, each highlighting diverse aspects who have been considered critical to enable a wider and more acceptable adoption of Smart Environments. Notable examples of such interesting adaptations are Context-aware Computing, Sentient Computing, Ambient Intelligence, Ambient Assisted Living and Internet of Everything. Under those different umbrella terms, researchers have explored the 3 stage enabling equation for Smart Environments, i.e. “SENSE + PROCESS = ACT”, i.e. spaces where the environment is aware of the needs, profiles and preferences from the sensed users and accommodates its behaviour to ease their daily interactions. Contributions around these different perspectives and applied to distinct environments, i.e. Smart Offices, Smart Homes, Smart Factories or Smart Cities, have been produced, all addressing the challenges posed by ever more complex systems of systems populated by multiple users. This talk will exemplify research results on how to accomplish these three core steps. Firstly, in the SENSE part, the importance of location sensing and the spread of low cost highly dense sensing environments (RFID, NFC or low range Bluetooth) will be described. Secondly, the PROCESS stage where ever more sophisticated analytics mechanisms to take into account historic and real-time data are considered, combining domain-driven (rules) and data-driven solutions, will be analysed. Thirdly, the ACT stage will be explored, considering the evolution from reactive to learning persuasive environments which aim to collaborate with their users. Thus, a middle ground fostering collaboration between smart things and people will be defended giving place to Smarter environments. The implications of the Smarter environments approach will be illustrated with use cases in the Open Government and Efficient Energy Management domains.

The tutorial on the Web of Things discusses possible solutions to build the entire vertical system by identifying the relevant components, illustrating their functionality and integration, and showing the examples of existing tools and
systems. First, the tutorial covers architectural aspects and discusses the levels of abstraction for integrating the “things” into the Web. Next, the tutorial focuses on semantic technologies and analytic methods for leveraging services and applications on top of the “things”. State of the art technology and tools are showed through live demos. The tutorial concludes with a brief review of existing projects and an outline of research directions and challenges.

Investing In The US As A Canadian… And How To Do It RIGHT!! (feat. Erwin Szet...Volition Properties
=== Investing In The US As A Canadian… And How To Do It RIGHT!! (feat. Erwin Szeto) ===
Ever been curious about Real Estate Investing in the US?? At Volition, for the past 14 years, we have been focused on helping investors invest in over $250M of real estate and generate $100M of wealth in the Toronto market, but we are always open to learning more about other business models and learning from other investors.
The US has always been an intriguing market to invest in. But the US is a big place… if you’re interested in investing in the US, you probably have a lot of questions, like:
☑️ Specifically WHERE should you invest?
☑️ What are the best markets to invest in and why?
☑️ How much are property prices there?
☑️ What are the returns like?
☑️ What is cashflow like?
☑️ Compared to investing in Toronto or other cities in Ontario, what are the benefits / tradeoffs?
☑️ What ownership structure should I use?
☑️ What are the tax implications?
☑️ Can I get financing?
☑️ What are tenants like?
Enter Erwin Szeto, a longtime friend of Volition. Since 2005, Erwin Szeto and his team have navigated the challenging landscape of being landlords in Ontario. Now, they are shifting their focus and guiding their clients' investments toward the more landlord-friendly environment of the USA. This decision comes after assisting Canadian clients in transacting over $440,000,000 in income properties. Faced with issues like affordability constraints, tenant-friendly laws, rent control, and rental licensing in Canada, Erwin sees a clear opportunity in the U.S. Here, there is a significant influx of investments leading to the creation of high-paying manufacturing jobs. Erwin and his clients are poised to capitalize on these opportunities where landlord rights are stronger and there is no rent control.
To facilitate this transition, Erwin has partnered with and become a client of SHARE, a one-stop-shop U.S. Asset Manager. Founded by Canadians for Canadians, SHARE enables as passive an ownership experience as possible for landlords in the U.S., while still maintaining direct, 100% ownership.

Connected Environments focuses on the
research challenges that relate to the
infrastructure required to instrument our built
and natural environments. It builds on the need
for a skill set in programming, data capture and
visualization, and prototyping with stakeholders
to support the analysis of complex systems.

10. “A Smart City is a city that
integrates its systems - from
local labour markets to
financial markets, from local
government to education,
healthcare, transportation and
utilities - to drive efficiency for
the benefit of its inhabitants.”

Q. The tech reality – what kind of tool
kit would help designers explore and
understand tech capabilities?
Q. Things that think – what little bits
of intelligence you would like to see
embedded into everyday life?
Q. Making sense - how do we explain
decisions made by machines? How
much explanation should we expect?
Q. Augmenting understanding – when
will AR/VR jump from toy to natural
way of working?

SOCIAL STREAMS + BIG DATA TOOLKIT
22. AIR QUALITY
OPERATIONAL COST
Balancing BOM cost + technician time.
Install cost significant, field maintenance
expensive, infrastructure hard to access
Lessons learnt:
Pilot to test creases in system that 2x cost.
Product ≠original brief > Service (Bosch)

23. NATURE SMART CITIES
EDGE ANALYTICS
Moving from slow, simple data at edge to complex event
streams. Ultrasonic sensor in Bat box = 96kHz
(180GB / day -> ~2.1MB / day)
Lessons learnt:
DL needed data and expert verification.
Longitudinal obs. created new insights.
We ‘heard’ other sounds of the city

24. VOXBOX + SMALLTALK
ENGAGING INTERACTION
How can we engage a crowd to gauge public opinion and
gather feedback in situ.
Lessons learnt:
Experience increased input vs feedback form.
Direct input from kids at Young Vic.
Cost of appliance + setup req’s a blockage.

25. INTERNET OF
SCHOOL THINGS
A MEANS TO AN END
Enfield wanted 100 AQ devices, they have 100 schools.
Connecting with existing infrastructure / social structures
provides tactical means of engagement + national scale.
Lessons learnt:
Operational win win.
Long term memories.
Education context + kids as Trojan horses.

26. TOWER BRIDGE
MULTI TENANCY
In early experiments we observed spare capacity in
resources deployed in the field – could multiple
‘customers’ run applications on same compute fabric?
Lessons learnt:
Tension: single function vs lamp post server.
Technical challenge on resources available.
Governance challenge – cross dept budgets.

27. ORGANICITY.EU
EXPERIMENTATION
AS A SERVICE
Experimentation made easy - platform experience
Tools for co-creation – tech + social enablers
Ethics and privacy - model experimental agreement
Legal / IP - reference design / experimental agreement
Lessons learnt:
Cost in delivering service design not platform.
Engagement takes time + needs resources.
