 Issue: The Audio Lingual Method (ALM)

 Founded around 1950’s and
1960’s.
 Developed by Skinner
 Learning language as a habit or
like a parrot.
 Drills: Repeat main line
1. Change main line with new vocabulary.
2. Create and answer yes/No questions
based on main line.
 No explicit grammar rule.
 Students need to use language with out
stopping to think.
 Dialogs are taught through repetition
and imitation.
 Errors are carefully avoided because
they lead to the formation of bad habits.
 Each language has its unique system.
 Errors should be avoided and
corrected right away.
 IN ALM students can increase their
pronunciation and speaking ability.
 Pronunciation is thought since the
beginning.
 Students error are avoided and teacher
draw their attention to their difficulties.
 Instructions are given in the target language.
 Students’ native language interferes as little
as possible.
 Students are guided to repeat as
accurately and as quick as they can.
 The teacher begins the chain drill and
then pass the turn to the students.
 Want the students to speak
communicatively.
 Teacher is like a/an:
1. Orchestra leader
2. Teachers are responsible for leading
students.
3. model/imitation
 Students should:
1. Imitators
2. Repeaters
 Students were not exposed to real or
realistic language.
 This method is too rigid ,classes tend to drag
 Students complain about the boredom
caused by endless pattern drills.
 Sudents turns into parrot because of
repetition who can reproduce many things
but never create anything new
 This method is time consuming

  • 3.  Founded around 1950’s and 1960’s.  Developed by Skinner  Learning language as a habit or like a parrot.
  • 4.
  • 5.  Drills: Repeat main line 1. Change main line with new vocabulary. 2. Create and answer yes/No questions based on main line.  No explicit grammar rule.
  • 6.
  • 7.  Students need to use language with out stopping to think.  Dialogs are taught through repetition and imitation.  Errors are carefully avoided because they lead to the formation of bad habits.

  • 9.  Each language has its unique system.  Errors should be avoided and corrected right away.  IN ALM students can increase their pronunciation and speaking ability.  Pronunciation is thought since the beginning.  Students error are avoided and teacher draw their attention to their difficulties.
  • 10.  Instructions are given in the target language.  Students’ native language interferes as little as possible.
  • 11.  Students are guided to repeat as accurately and as quick as they can.  The teacher begins the chain drill and then pass the turn to the students.
  • 12.  Want the students to speak communicatively.
  • 13.  Teacher is like a/an: 1. Orchestra leader 2. Teachers are responsible for leading students. 3. model/imitation  Students should: 1. Imitators 2. Repeaters
  • 14.  Students were not exposed to real or realistic language.  This method is too rigid ,classes tend to drag  Students complain about the boredom caused by endless pattern drills.

  • 16.  Sudents turns into parrot because of repetition who can reproduce many things but never create anything new  This method is time consuming
