There are seven main types of documentaries: fly on the wall, docusoap, docudrama, reality TV, mixed, self reflective, and fully narrated. Fly on the wall documentaries have little to no narration and allow the audience to draw their own conclusions. Docusoaps follow individuals within a community in detail over time. Docudramas reconstruct events to portray atmospheres and feelings. Reality TV combines information and entertainment. Mixed documentaries use interviews, observation, archive footage, and narration. Self reflective documentaries have subjects aware of being filmed who speak to the camera. Fully narrated documentaries rely on a narrator throughout to convey information and arguments.
