Researchers from Brown Medical School first coined the term "Type 3 diabetes" in 2005 to describe Alzheimer's disease. They found a strong link between insulin resistance and Alzheimer's, similar to Type 1 and 2 diabetes. Studies show that brain cells can become insulin resistant over time from a diet high in sugar and carbohydrates, leading to cell death and increased risk of Alzheimer's lesions. Extra virgin coconut oil has been shown to help control or even reverse Type 3 diabetes progression by providing an alternative fuel for the brain in the form of medium chain triglycerides and ketones.
