This document analyzes how Twitter was used to spread information during the 2010 Chilean earthquake. It finds that: 1) Over 4.7 million tweets were posted by 716,344 users in the days following the quake. 2) Rumors tended to be questioned more by other Twitter users, while confirmed news received more affirmations, suggesting the community works like a collaborative filter of information. 3) However, no automatic way was identified to classify confirmed news versus false rumors based on the tweets alone. Factors like sentiment, sarcasm, and who has authority to confirm information would need to be considered.
