Twitter is a social networking and microblogging platform launched in 2006 that allows users to post messages of up to 140 characters. It can be used for advertising, generating website traffic, customer service, brand advocacy, and word-of-mouth marketing through dedicated brand channels or during events. However, a 2009 study found that much of the content on Twitter at the time consisted of pointless babble, spam, or self-promotion rather than conversational or newsworthy messages with value to spread.
