Beauty must appeal to the
senses, must provide us with
immediate enjoyment, must
impress us or insinuate itself
into us without any effort on
our part.
- CLAUDE DEBUSSY
TWENTIETH CENTURY MUSIC
In this history of
music and arts, every
period has its own
characteristic style
which is associated
with the society from
which it originated.
The period of the
19th and 20th
century perceived
the two world wars,
and had been a
period of many
changes
A period of many inventions such as the telephone,
television, electronic light, computers, cassette tapes,
synthesizers, CD players, and many others.
ADVANCEMENT OF TECHNOLOGY
MUSICAL
TIMELINE
Music encompasses culture, art, emotion, and ideology. As society
evolves, so does the style and sound of the music, and what emerges
is a diverse tapestry that represents the time period in which the
music was created as well as the people who created it.
1820 - 1900 1900 - 2000
1750 - 1830
CLASSICAL
The introduction of a form
which has dominated
instrumental composition to
the
present day: sonata form.
The development of the
modern concerto,
ROMANTIC
The next period in musical
history therefore found
composers attempting to
balance the expressive and
the formal in music with a
variety of approaches
TWENTIETH CENTURY
The early half of the 20th century
also gave rise to new musical styles,
which were not quite as extreme as
the electronic, chance, and
minimalist styles that arose later.
1400 - 1600 1600 - 1750
1150 - 1400
MEDIEVAL
This is the first period where
we can begin to be fairly
certain as to how a great
deal of the music which has
survived actually
sounded.
RENAISSANCE
The fifteenth century
witnessed vastly increased
freedoms, most particularly in
terms of
what is actually perceived as
'harmony' and 'polyphony'
BAROQUE
The foundations were laid for the
following 300 or so years of musical
expression: the idea of the modern
orchestra was born, along with opera
(including the overture, prelude, aria,
recitative and chorus), the concerto,
sonata, and modern cantata
IMPRESSIONISM MUSIC
It used to describe music that uses a wide
range of instrumental colors and unusual
rhythmic pattern to express subtle feelings
and perceptions.
It is a style borrowed from painting which
creates illusion of light and atmosphere by
using colors side by side instead of blending.
CHARACTERISTICS:
• Vague in form
• Delicate in nature
• Had a mysterious atmosphere.
• Suggestion
• Moved away from the Romantic movement.
THE HISTORICAL
BACKGROUND OF
IMPRESSIONISM
Impressionism was a radical
art movement that began in
the late 1800s, centered
primarily around Parisian
painters. Impressionists
rebelled against classical
subject matter and
embraced modernity,
desiring to create works that
reflected the world in which
they lived.
CLAUDE DEBUSSY
He is a French composer
who adapted the style of
Impressionism to his
music. He is one of the
leading Impressionism
composers. The Engulfed
Cathedral, Claire de Lune,
Chanson de Bilitis and
String Quartet in G minor
are some of his
impressionism music
pieces.
CLAIRE DE LUNE
CLAUDE DEBUSSY
The title Clair de Lune
means 'moonlight' in French. Fair
enough- the piece does remind us of the
moonlit night. Debussy's music was a
turning point from the Romantic music
that had dominated the 19th century to
EXPRESSIONISM MUSIC
It is characteristically subjective, dissonant
and tonal, although these traits are by no
means confined to the expressionistic
category.
This musical style reflects intense emotions
and extremes of behavior through
techniques such as dissonance.
CHARACTERISTICS:
• Atonal and dissonant.
• German movement.
• Moved away from French impressionism.
• Emotional, romantic feeling.
ARNOLD SCHOENBERG
He was the pioneer of
atonal music style.
Identified the twelve-tones
system composition, his
earliest works are post-
Romantic and
Expressionistic style, and
some of his later works
are Pierrot, Lunaire, Op. 21,
Variations for Ochestra
and Sonata No. 2 for piano.
PERIPETIE
ARNOLD SCHOENBERG
Peripetie comes from the Greek word
meaning 'sudden changes'. ‘Peripetie’ is
the fourth movement of Schoenberg’s
‘Five Orchestral Pieces’. It was written in
1909, but revised in 1922 and 1949.
IMPRESSIONISM
Aside from Debussy, can you
name another proponent of
Impressionism Music? EXPRESSIONISM
Can you enumerate other
compositions made by
Schoenberg?
QUESTION FOR GIRLS
The term _______ was originally borrowed from
visual art and literature. Artists created vivid
pictures, distorting colors and shapes to make
unrealistic images that suggested strong
emotions. Composers poured intense
emotional expression into their music and
explored the subconscious mind.

to a style that explores mood and atmosphere
through the use of timbre, orchestration, and
