2. Explain the traditional characteristics of a “profession”, in relation to
education. (12)
3. Explain what the abbreviation, SACE, stands for in terms of education as a
profession. (1)
4. When was the SACE Act promulgated? (1)
5. Name the three core responsibilities of SACE, in order of priority. (4)
6. Discuss the composition of the SACE council in terms of the numbers of
representatives and the type of representation. (12)
7. Identify the reasons why educators might be removed from the Register of
SACE. (6)
8. What are the duties of the Professional Development division of SACE? (8)
9. Discuss the reason why unions feel that there is an imbalance in the work of
SACE. (6)
10. Discuss the concepts ‘provisional registration’ and ‘full registration’, and how
they differ from other countries, as well as the implication of these different

3. Essay Questions
1. You are a student-teacher and you have been advised to register
with SACE. Critically discuss the role of SACE in registering all
practising teachers in South Africa and the the registration
procedures that need to be followed. (25)
2. Discuss the disciplinary procedures of SACE under the following
headings:
- the investigation of an alleged breach of the code [6];
- the procedures during the disciplinary hearings [6];
- the recommendations of the disciplinary committee [4];
- the appeals process against the recommendations of the
disciplinary committee [6];

3. Critically compare the interpretation of Professionalism from the New
York State and New Zealand, and discuss which interpretation of the
mentioned two was adopted by South Africa. (25)
