The Greeks rebelled against Ottoman Turkish rule in 1821 and fought for independence, adopting a slogan that led to attacks on Muslims. In 1919, Greek soldiers invaded Turkey and threatened further conquest, leading to conflict that caused hundreds of thousands of ethnic Greeks to flee Asia Minor.
