Arctic Circle
Where?
 The latitude range is from a little
past the Arctic Circle to 60-70o N.
 Linear distribution.
 Found in parts of continents such
as North America, Europe and Asia.
 Some countries it is found in are
parts of Russia, Greenland,
Norway, Canada and Iceland.
 Roughly 10% of Russia’s land is
tundra, which is found in its
extreme north.
Interesting Facts:
• There are two types of tundra:
• Arctic
• Alpine
• The Alpine tundra is the most fragile
biome on Earth.
• It is shrinking at alarming rates
never seen from as long as 10,000
years ago.
Interesting Facts:
• There are more than 1500 species
of plants living in the tundra.
• There are three main peoples in
the tundra:
 Innuit
 Innu
 Yakut
Interesting Facts:
• Summers are 6 weeks long.
Altitude
Highest point:
3377m.
Lowest point:
91m.

Plants
1) Growing low to the ground
Fun Fact:
They don’t usually
grow taller than a
foot.
Resist the coldest of temperatures.
Reduce damage caused by strong winds and sharp ice particles.
Plants
1) Growing low to the ground
2) Developing hairs on stems
Fun Fact:
There are around 1700
types of plants living
in the Arctic tundra
alone.
Traps heat close to the plant.
Protection from the wind.
 Animals of the tundra have shorter legs and ears.

Fun Fact: The Inuit
are also known as the
Eskimos.

Conservation Organizations
 Organizations:
 GreenPeace - Suppressing the
pumping of Arctic oil.
 Alaskan and Russian parks –
Safeguarding tundra areas
populated with Arctic species.
 Successes:
 GreenPeace: Protesting against
oil drilling occurring close to
Bear Island nature reserve.
 Alaskan and Russian parks:
Keeping the land human-free.
Raising $200 million a year.
Let’s do our Part
 Switch to alternative energy sources: solar, wind, etc.
 Limit where human construction takes place (roads, settlements, pipelines)
that may damage the biome.
 Recycle, reuse and reduce.
Thank You
Save the Arctic. Save the World.

Tundra

  • 2. On the Map Globe Map with Biomes Equator Tropic of Capricorn Tropic of Cancer Antarctic Circle Arctic Circle
  • 3. Where?  The latitude range is from a little past the Arctic Circle to 60-70o N.  Linear distribution.  Found in parts of continents such as North America, Europe and Asia.  Some countries it is found in are parts of Russia, Greenland, Norway, Canada and Iceland.  Roughly 10% of Russia’s land is tundra, which is found in its extreme north.
  • 4. Interesting Facts: • There are two types of tundra: • Arctic • Alpine • The Alpine tundra is the most fragile biome on Earth. • It is shrinking at alarming rates never seen from as long as 10,000 years ago.
  • 5. Interesting Facts: • There are more than 1500 species of plants living in the tundra. • There are three main peoples in the tundra:  Innuit  Innu  Yakut
  • 6. Interesting Facts: • Summers are 6 weeks long.
  • 8. -50 -40 -30 -20 -10 0 10 20 30 0 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC TEMPERATURE(DEGREESC) RAINFALL(MM) Tundra Climate Graph Rainfall Temperature Climate -40oC 19oC 0mm 0mm 0mm 0mm 0mm 30mm 30mm 30mm  Rainfall total: 140mm  Temperature change: 59 degrees Celsius
  • 9. Food Chain Sunlight Water Producer Primary consumer Secondary consumer
  • 10. Plants 1) Growing low to the ground Fun Fact: They don’t usually grow taller than a foot. Resist the coldest of temperatures. Reduce damage caused by strong winds and sharp ice particles.
  • 11. Plants 1) Growing low to the ground 2) Developing hairs on stems Fun Fact: There are around 1700 types of plants living in the Arctic tundra alone. Traps heat close to the plant. Protection from the wind.
  • 12.  Animals of the tundra have shorter legs and ears. Animals To reduce heat loss
  • 13. Animals  Hibernation Reduce energy spent Skip the deserted winter months
  • 14. Who lives here?  Hunters  To feed their tribe  To create coats to battle the cold  Caribou  Harp seal Fun Fact: The Inuit are also known as the Eskimos. + • Keep their tribe fed • Keep their traditions for longer - • Hunting threatened animals such as: • Polar bears • Narwhals • Etc.
  • 15. Who lives here?  Oil drillers  Canada  Russia  Alaska  Billions of barrels of oil and natural gas to be pumped + • Fuels numerous countries electrically. • Billions of dollars to exporting countries - • Global warming • Species’ extinction
  • 16. Who lives here?  Miners  Canada  Greenland  Russia Fun Fact: Yakuta has an estimated one quarter of the World’s diamonds Copper Lead Nickel Palladium Uranium Zinc + • Billions of dollars to countries - • Changes in habitat • Roads melt ice • Habitat fragmentation
  • 18. Threats Drilling and Mining Ice fragmentation Animals lose food Species extinction Habitat destruction Burn fossil fuels Greenhouse gas accumulation Species extinction Habitat destruction Human settlement Build roads Burn fossil fuels Melts ice Species extinction Habitat destruction Global Warming Melting of ice caps Habitat loss Climate change on global scale* Species extinction Habitat destruction
  • 19. Conservation Organizations  Organizations:  GreenPeace - Suppressing the pumping of Arctic oil.  Alaskan and Russian parks – Safeguarding tundra areas populated with Arctic species.  Successes:  GreenPeace: Protesting against oil drilling occurring close to Bear Island nature reserve.  Alaskan and Russian parks: Keeping the land human-free. Raising $200 million a year.
  • 20. Let’s do our Part  Switch to alternative energy sources: solar, wind, etc.  Limit where human construction takes place (roads, settlements, pipelines) that may damage the biome.  Recycle, reuse and reduce.
  • 21. Thank You Save the Arctic. Save the World.

Editor's Notes

  1. 23.5 Tropics Antarctic circle before arctic circle 66.5 Circles
  2. Make sure you look at one country in detail and describe its compass points.
  3. Arctic: On the edge of all northern lands/territories.
  4. A cushion plant is a compact, low growing, mat forming plant that is found in alpine, subalpine, arctic, or subarctic environments around the world. Innuit: largest people living in the tundra. Canada and Greenland. Innu: Northern Labrador and Quebec tundra regions Yakut: Siberian tundra
  5. THREE TYPES OF TUNDRA
  6. After December, it keeps decreasing up till its lowest in January. 59 degrees change from highest to lowest point of the year. READ MS’S POWERPOINT
  7. Remind them of the definition of tundra “treeless plain.” Pink flower: moss campion. Arctic willow
  8. Hairy leaves: Labrador tea plant. Lavender color flower: pasque flower.
  9. By shaving shorter limbs, they have to use less energy to heat up their entire body, which, in this case, the energy comes at a very high price.
  10. Summer: eats anything and is being converted to fat. Winter: fat used as an insulation and source of energy. Arctic ground squirrel. Roaming the winter tundra wastes more energy than hibernating through the cold. Furthermore, the food is way too scarce during the winter months to fuel such animals.
  11. Inuit, Innu, Yakut Caribou Seal Fish
  12. Gives countries billions of dollars in return. Both mine images: Canada The Ekati Diamond Mine
  13. Easier for them to pollute. Polar Bears International.
