This document summarizes Shelby Smith's trip around the world over the course of Mr. Carn's final project. It covers the physical and human geography as well as issues in each of the following world regions: The United States, Canada, Europe, Russia, East Asia, Australia, the Caribbean, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. For each region, 3-4 examples are given of notable geographic features and cultural aspects that Shelby experienced firsthand, such as climbing Mount Everest, visiting the Statue of Liberty and Eiffel Tower, and attending shows at the Sydney Opera House. Issues addressed include pollution, the European Union, nuclear waste, natural disasters, the drug trade, and conflicts over oil.

and very much worth the
work to get there.

The Statue of Liberty.
• Located in the middle of
the New York Harbor.
• She is 306 feet tall and
weighs close it 450,000.
• The seven rays on her
crown, are for each
continent.
• When I visited this great
symbol of freedom, I
climbed all 154 steps to
reach the top for an
amazing view of New York.
5. Issues in the US.
The Melting Pot of People.
• The United States is full of all
kinds of people.
• 70% is made up of people
that can trace family back
to Europe.
• This can be a problem.
There are so many different
people living in a smaller
area, they don‟t always get
alone in the best way.
• The government is doing a
great job keeping people
controlled and treating
everyone equally.

Lakes.
• Canada and America has 8
out the 15 largest lakes in
the world.
• Almost 9% of Canada‟s
totally area is covered by
freshwater.
• While in Canada I decided
to visit Lake Superior in
Ontario.
• Its one of the largest lakes.
Its surrounded by beautiful
greenness.

Sports.
• The 2 main sports played in
Canada are lacrosse and
hockey.
• Lacrosse was made by the
native peoples of the lands.
• Hockey was devolved by
the French settlers.
• Another popular sport is
hunting. There is a lot of
different game to be hunted
in this part of the world.
• While here my father and I
killed our first moose.
9. Issues in Canada.
Pollution.
• Today in Canada they are
experiencing a high amount
of pollution.
• Factories are creating acid
rain and cars just add to the
already high amount.
• The Great Lakes are also
seeing the rise in
industrialism. Factories are
using them as their waste
bins. Fish, plants, animals are
dying.
• The government has passed
laws to help improve these
issues.
11. Physical
Geography.
The Alps.
• Europe‟s most popular
mountain range, takes up a
large part of the southwest.
• Cuts off Italy from the rest of
Europe.
• They extend in a crescent
shape for almost 700 miles.
• When in the Alps I when
snowboarding and it was
awesome, but just a bit too
cold for me liking.

Paris, France.
• A cultural hearth for fashion
and design.
• Home of the beautiful Eiffel
Tower.
• You can also spend a
magical day at Disneyland
Paris.
• When in Paris I decided to
take my mom and dad on a
boat ride in the Seine River
at night. All the lights were
gorgeous including the Eiffel
Tower.
13. Issues in Europe.
European Union.
• Was created after World
War ll.
• Tries to keep all the
countries untied.
• Promotes the use of a
common currency, call the
Euro.
• I think all the countries
should just be nice to each
other. If everyone was nice
to everyone the world
would be a nicer and
happier place to live.
15. Physical
Geography.
Siberia.
• Eastern Russia also known as
Siberia is about 77% of all
the land in Russia.
• Only about 25% of the
people live in Siberia.
• This place of the country is
high in natural resources.
• Temperature can get as low
as -90 degrees and up to 90
degrees in the summers.
• During my visit to this part of
the world. I stayed in the ice
hotel. It was so cool…
16. Human
Geography.
The Space Race.
• During World War ll, Russia
was the former USSR.
• The Soviets became the first
country to send a satellite
into space. It was known as
Sputnik.
• They were also the first
country to put a man in
space, Yuri Gagarin, on April
12, 1961.
• The Space Race also
helped to introduce new
and better technology for
the USSR.
17. Issues in Russia.
Nuclear waste.
• During the time of the USSR,
dozens of nuclear reactors
were built. The reactors
weren't built in the proper
way so they are now letting
out radioactive materials.
• A great example of this is
the disaster of Chernobyl in
1986. Over 100,00 square
mile where said to be
affected by this huge
meltdown.
• Being exposed to these
conditions can cause birth
defects or maybe nothing at
all.

Himalaya Mountains.
• The Himalaya Mountain
range is home to the tallest
mountains in the world.
• All of the mountains taller
than 8,000 meters can be
found in the Himalayas.
• Including Mount Everest and
K2.
• While in this part of the world
I climbed to the highest
point in the world, Mt.
Everest‟s peak. The view is
greater than anything I‟ve
ever seen.
20. Human
Geography.
The Great Wall of China.
• Built in the what they think
was as early as the 7th
century BC.
• The wall is made of
stone, brick, tamped
earth, wood, and maybe a
few other things.
• The wall its self is said to be
about 3,889 miles long with
other defense barriers
added as well.
• When I went to see the
Great Wall, I walked the
whole thing seeing a large
amount of the country.
21. Issues in East Asia.
The Ring of Fire.
• The ring of fire is an area
where there is a high
amount of volcanic activity.
• It is located in the Pacific
Ocean, in the middle of the
Asian continent and the
North American continent.
• It has 452 volcanoes and is
home to over 75% of the
world's volcanoes.
• On March 11th, 2011 a
massive earthquake of 8.9
magnitude stuck Japan.
Killing upwards of 16,000
people, with huge amounts
of damages.

The Outback.
• A large section of dry flat
land in the middle of the
country.
• Also can be called the
“back of beyond” or
“beyond the black stump”
by the natives.
• Home you a huge amount
of animals that can only be
found in this part of the
world.
• During my visit to The
Outback I got to see a
Kangaroo close up and pet
it.

Sydney Opera House.
• Opened in 1973 after taking
15 years to build.
• The Opera House hosts over
1,500 shows a year, bring in
about 1.2 million people a
year.
• The house is also one of the
most popular visitor
attractions in Australia.
• Getting to visit this amazing
structure was just grand.
Also getting to attend one
of its famous shows will
always be with me.
25. Issues in Australia.
The Stolen Generation.
• Between 1909 and 1969
100,000 mixed-raced
children were taken from
their homes and were put in
the care of “White Families”.
• Aborigines faced the same
things that happened to the
African Americans of the
United States.
• The Aborigines didn‟t gain
full citizenship till 1967.
• After mass protest the
people gain their rights.

Greater Antilles Islands.
• Is a group of islands that
include Cuba, the Cayman
Islands, Hispaniola, Puerto
Rico, and Jamaica.
• These island were made by
volcanoes which makes
them have a mountainous
terrain.
• Temperatures stay between
70 and 80 all year round.
• I enjoyed the great weather
and beautiful white sandy
beaches.

Rastafarian.
• A religion base on
Christianity but with African
themes and ways for
thinking added.
• Rasta‟s believe in
“repatriation” meaning to
return to your roots.
• You see many Rasta‟s
wearing their hair in
dreadlocks because of their
ancestors.
• All the people I talked to
were very nice and laid
back. Why can‟t the world
be free like them?

Caribbean.
Is it Safe?
• Did you know that most of
the countries in the
Caribbean are considered
to be 3rd world countries?
• Only 50% of the people in
Haiti have clean water.
• Most people are
uneducated, which makes
for unsafe hospitals and
untrained staff in them.
• The murder rate is about 38
percent(2009) in Trinidad
and Tobago.

Victoria Falls.
• A famous waterfall, also
one of the Seven Natural
Wonders of the World.
• It is said to be about 360
feet tall and over a mile
wide.
• During the rainy season it is
the largest waterfall in the
world by volume.
• Going to Victoria Falls was
one of my favorites, I laid at
the edge and it was a rush
of emotions. Also the view is
beautiful!

The Great Pyramid of Giza.
• The oldest and largest of
the 3 pyramids.
• The oldest of the Seven
Wonders of the Ancient
World. As the only one that‟s
still intact for the most part.
• The Great Pyramid was the
tallest man-made structure
in the world for over 3,800
years.
• Seeing this giant structure
and knowing that it was
made before cranes was
just amazing!
33. Issues in Africa.
HIV/AIDS.
• HIV stands for Human
immunodeficiency virus
infection.
• AIDs stands for acquired
immunodeficiency
syndrome.
• AIDs is now pandemic
which means its an
uncontrolled outbreak of a
disease that is over a large
area.
• There are about 26 million
recorded cases of AIDs in
Africa.
• 80% of child AID cases are in
African and 70% of adults.

Amazon River.
• The Amazon is the longest
river in the world.
• Flowing for about 4,000 miles
with over 1,000 rivers that
empty into it.
• Carries more water to the
ocean than any other river.
• The Amazon is also home to
many different animals like
the Piranha and the Pink
River Dolphin to name a
few.
• I went on a boat ride and
saw family of Pink River
Dolphins!

Christ the Redeemer.
• The Christ the Redeemer
Statue is located in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil.
• Is one of the world's best
known and most visited
monuments.
• It represents Jesus standing
over the city of
Rio, welcoming people from
near and far.
• I got ride a trolley up to the
top of the mountain to see it
up close, its huge!
37. Issues in Latin
America.
The Drug Trade.
• 90% of cocaine and 80% of
all the meth that enters the
United States comes from
Latin America.
• The drug cartels are said to
make about 39 billion dollars
a year.
• When all the drugs, it makes
Latin America one for the
places with the highest
crime rates.
• 32..6 people per 100,00 in
2008.
• Mexico‟s drug war has cost
over 50,000 people their
lives.

Rub Al-Khali.
• Also known as the „Empty
Quarter "or “a place where
no one comes out”
• Its about the size of the
State of Texas.
• Dunes can reach upwards
of 800 feet.
• 10 years can pass without a
drop of rain.
• Surface temperatures can
reach up to 150 degrees.
• I raced a camel with my
best friend… we won!

• Mecca is the holiest city in
all of Islam. Every Muslim
must make the trip once in
their life.
• When I visited Mecca there
was a sea of people
praying.

Middle East.
Oil.
• 64% if oil is from the Middle
East.
• Oil is so important that
countries will go to war if
there isn‟t enough getting to
their country.
• The US only gets about 13%
of its oil from the Middle
East.
• The religion conflicts could
be a reason that America
doesn‟t want to buy oil from
the Middle East.
