Tuberculosis is a respiratory disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis that can be spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Exposure can result in latent TB infection where a person does not have symptoms but can develop active TB later. Latent TB cannot spread while active TB can. TB is treatable with antibiotics and screening involves skin tests or blood tests to check for infection. Treatment differs between latent infection and active disease.
