BasicNeeds is a non-profit founded in 2000 by Chris Underhill to help people with mental illness or epilepsy live and work successfully in their communities. It has operated programs in 12 countries since 2001, providing community mental health services, peer support groups, and helping people reenter the workforce. The organization has served over 589,000 people and seen significant improvements in access to treatment, community participation, and ability to work, as well as reductions in symptoms.

As part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives, Steria works to bridge the digital divide and promote education through various programs like smart classrooms, solar computer centers, career development centers, and supporting underprivileged schools. The intern helped teach students at a local school as part of Steria's CSR work and found the experience very rewarding.

CAUSE provides peer-led support to carers of people with serious mental illness across Northern Ireland. Their services include a helpline, carer advocacy, regional support groups, training, and respite provision for carers. When providing respite, CAUSE works collaboratively with the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, with an annual allocated budget and regular meetings to monitor needs. Over 90 people from 12 of the 13 local authority areas in the North East and Cumbria region of England attended an autism event to discuss issues and developments. Some new housing and support models have been developed and examples of collaborative work between local authorities and the NHS involving autistic people were presented. However, collaboration and joint working between services still needs improvement. Autism training also needs to be designed and delivered with involvement from autistic individuals. A lack of peer support, advocacy services, and other low-level community support services were highlighted as burning issues.

Mental health act 2007
The Mental Health Act 2007 simplified and broadened the definition of mental disorder. It abolished the previous four categories of mental disorder and replaced them with the single category of "mental disorder" defined as "any disorder or disability of mind." It also removed exceptions for immorality, promiscuity, and sexual deviancy, leaving only dependence on alcohol or drugs. The Act expanded the roles of approved mental health professionals and responsible clinicians to include professionals other than medical practitioners such as nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, and social workers.
Making mental health count
Despite the enormous burden that mental ill-health imposes on individuals, their families, society, health systems and the economy, mental health care remains a neglected area of health policy in too many countries. Mental disorders represent a considerable disease burden, and have a significant impact on the lives of the OECD population, and account for considerable direct and indirect costs. This report argues that even in those OECD countries with a long history of deinstitutionalisation, there is still a long way to go to make community-based mental health care that achieves good outcomes for people with severe mental illness a reality. The disproportionate focus on severe mental illness has meant that mild-to-moderate mental illnesses, which makes up the largest burden of disease, have remained overwhelmingly neglected. This book addresses the high cost of mental illness, weaknesses and innovative developments in the organisation of care, changes and future directions for the mental health workforce, the need to develop better indicators for mental health care and quality, and tools for better governance of the mental health system. Community wellbeing coaches
Community Wellbeing Coaches is a community interest company established in 2011 that employs coaches from local communities to support disadvantaged individuals and families in improving their health and wellbeing. The coaches receive referrals and work one-on-one or in groups to help clients set goals, develop action plans, and monitor progress over multiple sessions. Early outcomes include over 250 referrals served, 850 interventions conducted, and clients already meeting goals, with some moving into employment or volunteering.
