Tsunamis are large sea waves caused by underwater earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. They mostly occur in the Pacific Ocean and can be dangerous in shallow waters. The shoreline may retreat before the first wave hits, and while the initial wave may not be the largest, tsunamis consist of a series of waves. Famous tsunamis destroyed parts of Sri Lanka, Phuket, and Okushiri Island in Japan.
