The goal of every teacher is to maximize the quality of education that he or she provides to
students. There are various factors that can play a significant role in achieving this goal. My
philosophy of education is based on four main concepts which include effective instructional
choices, fostering curiosity in the mind of students, helping students develop critical thinking
skills and utilizing effective communication skills.
Designing effective instructions plays a significant role in engendering a better quality of
learning. I believe that teachers should know how to make effective instructional choices to
enhance students’ learning. Since students have different learning abilities, teachers should use
multiple methods of teaching such as visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile teaching methods
to address the needs of a diverse group of learners. By using those different learning styles,
teachers would be able to guide their students in identifying learning styles that the students can
build upon. In addition, understanding the students’ interests could help teachers to create and
utilize interesting methods of instructions that can keep students engaged and motivated.
In terms of fostering curiosity in the mind of students, teachers should be able to give
students an opportunity to come up with questions that pick their interests. When a teacher has
the ability to stimulate the minds of students, he/she could instill curiosity in students, encourage
them to learn, and build their critical thinking skills. Curiosity keeps students’ minds active, so
teachers should focus on that in order to foster a positive learning environment. One of the best
ways to install the curiosity in students is to make them ask questions. In addition, the idea of
fostering curiosity could make students think more critically. Also, developing the curiosity in
students would ignite their desire to learn. For example, as an English teacher, I used to ask
T e a c h i n g s t a t e m e n t P a g e | 2
questions at the beginning of the class in order to spark curiosity in my students which make
them motivated and ready to learn.
As an educator, I believe that questioning, problem solving, and collaboration are the
three main elements that promote students’ critical thinking skills. In order to make students
become critical thinkers, teachers should ask guiding questions and provide students with
resources that will encourage them to find some answers. Furthermore, teachers should find a
way to make students think outside the box so that they will develop how problem solving skills
that go hand in hand with critical thinking skills. For instance, an effective way to facilitate
critical thinking is encouraging students to work in groups, by doing so; they can bounce ideas
off each other and come up with better ideas as a result of team effort.
Finally, effective communication is required for a teacher to properly deliver his or her
messages to students. It is the duty of the teacher to understand the appropriate techniques that
will enable him or her to communicate effectively with students. Some components of effective
communication include attention to audience, tone, and the ability to receive feedback. In terms
of attention to audience, a teacher needs to understand the type of audience he or she is trying to
communicate with. Different audiences interpret messages differently; therefore it is important to
accommodate the needs of each specific audience. The tone at which a teacher delivers his or her
message also affects how students receive it. A teacher should be able to convey his or her
message with confidence, as it increases students’ ability to trust the credibility of the
information. Finally, the ability to receive feedback in the positive manner helps a teacher to
evaluate his or her communication skills and see if there is room for future improvement.
