Teaching Philosophy Statement:
Introduction:
My teaching philosophy has been shaped by my personal experiences in education as a
child, as well as my experiences as an undergraduate. As a student I have experienced teachers
who practiced negative reinforcement, memorization, and created classroom hierarchies based on
levels of knowledge. As an undergraduate, when observing classrooms I have observed teachers
with different teaching strategies, that emphasize critical thinking and reasoning. During both
experiences Science and Mathematics were prioritized over other subjects, especially the arts
which were often overlooked. I personally believe teaching should use positive reinforcement,
develop critical thinking skills, and encourage students to do their best work.
According to my philosophy I have a few basic behavioral and academic expectations for
my students, which will help them and their peers to succeed. I strongly believe in the Golden
Rule, which I plan on teaching my students by being an example for them through
professionalism and classroom management. As a teacher I will be well-organized, appropriately
dressed, and respectful of my students and colleagues. I expect my students to exhibit the same
professionalism and when they steer away from this I will use classroom management to address
any issues. I believe in reinforcing positive behavior, but when students are misbehaving I plan
on using negative specific feedback so my students learn how to correct the behavior which
works alongside with positive reinforcement to help encourage students to behave properly.
Academically, I expect my students to participate in class, ask for help when they’re confused,
and be respectful of their peers because as their teacher, I will be putting all my effort into my
students’ academic advancement so I expect my students to demonstrate the same dedication to
academic achievement.
According to my teaching philosophy Arts Integration is an important part of teaching
core subjects because there are multiple ways of understanding class material and multiple ways
of expressing that knowledge. Arts Integration is beneficial because it can be used to introduce
new material or reinforce information from a previous lesson. It is also beneficial because this
teaching method appeals to students with different learning styles, since it makes the curriculum
more accessible to students and gives them resources to remember information. The rhythmic
phrasing in music can be used as a mnemonic device, to help students remember ideas and
concepts from core subjects. The elements of dance can also be used to teach students about
story-telling, if students are struggling with writing.
My teaching philosophy seeks to create a positive environment for my students through
classroom management and making class materials accessible to everyone student, no matter
what their learning style is. I want my students to be in a positive environment because
emotional and mental exhaustion from stress interrupt learning and I want my students to be
excited about learning. Part of my teaching philosophy is the importance of Arts Integration
lessons because I want to provide my students with a holistic curriculum that extends beyond the
core subjects and celebrates all areas of academia, including the arts.
