Alfred Joyce Kilmer was an American journalist, poet, literary critic, lecturer and soldier who served as a sergeant in the 165th U.S. Infantry Regiment during World War 1. He was born in New Jersey in 1886 and attended Rutgers College and Columbia University, where he was involved in journalism and writing. In addition to his writing career, Kilmer briefly taught and also served in the U.S. military during World War 1 before dying in battle in 1918 at the age of 31.

Trees

ON KILLING A TREE
The poem "On Killing a Tree" by Gieve Patel discusses the difference between cutting down a tree and killing a tree. The poet notes that it takes a long, cruel process to truly kill a tree - its roots must be entirely pulled out of the ground. Once a tree's roots are removed, it will harden, twist, wither and die. The poet conveys that trees should not be killed as they have as much a right to live as any other creature. Removing large numbers of trees can damage the environment through soil erosion, disrupted water cycles and loss of biodiversity. Reforestation efforts are needed to mitigate the effects of widespread tree removal.

Reading_Lesson 6 Critical Reading as Looking for Ways of Thinking
Critical reading involves analyzing a text to understand its meaning and purpose beyond just comprehending the literal words. It requires reflecting on what the text says and does by making judgments about logical ideas and connections. Simple reading aims to understand the basic definition and central idea of a text, while critical reading has the additional goals of understanding an author's purpose, tone, biases, and inferring deeper meaning. Critical thinking builds on critical reading by applying complex thought processes like identifying main ideas, drawing conclusions, comparing/contrasting, and determining facts versus opinions to make reasoned judgments and solve problems effectively.

1. The lesson plan is for a 6th grade English class on the topic of eating out. It is one hour long.
2. The objective is for students to practice reading a real food menu and writing information about foods. Students will practice pronunciation of food vocabulary, reading menus, and asking/answering about ordering food.

The poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley describes his unconquerable spirit in the face of adversity. At age 17, Henley had part of his leg amputated due to tuberculosis of the bone. Through four stanzas, Henley expresses thanks for his inner strength, declares that he has endured hardship without complaint, is unafraid of death, and considers himself master of his own fate.

Of studies
Francis Bacon's essay discusses the value and proper use of studies. It makes three key points:
1) Studies should be used to gain competence and proficiency, not just for entertainment or to impress others. True learning comes from applying knowledge, not just accumulating it.
2) Both studies and experience are necessary for learning - studies provide direction but must be bounded by real-world experience. Too much of either alone is insufficient.
3) Different types of reading and study are appropriate for different materials, from superficial reading to in-depth analysis, and study strengthens various skills and remedies weaknesses when applied properly to the individual.
