2. Concept
My video is going to use the song ‘Sunrise’ in a very literal sense. It talks
about a teenager who feels he cannot handle what is going on in his life, so
wants to commit suicide. The lyrics seem to be a plea from the singer to the
audience, telling them to hold on until the sunrise. This is metaphorical for
starting fresh, and forgetting about the previous day, because with a new day,
brings a new start.
Seeing as the band’s previous songs are a lot less emotional than Sunrise,
I’m going to try and incorporate the actual band themselves into the video, so
it still has the ‘rock’ vibe, yet keeps the seriousness of the theme of the song.
For example, something like this:
Which is a similar genre, and a similar theme of lyrics. The video above can
be viewed on YouTube, by typing in:
‘One Less Heart To Break by Patent Pending’.
Seeing as it is a serious subject, I’m going to try and handle it as sensitively
as possible, whilst still making an interesting music video.
3. Performance & Narrative
Seeing as Our Last Night’s music us generally more ‘violent’ or ‘angry’, as
they are a metal band, the fact that they’d do a song like this is a complete U-turn.
One of their other emotional videos includes just the singer and the guitarist
as there is only vocals and guitar. The song in question is ‘Falling Away’ .
However, the narrative for Sunrise, is going to be of a Teenage boy, who is
having a difficult time (what with, is unknown to the audience).
There’s going to be hints that the boy is suicidal, as there is a small montage
of him getting dressed, and packing his bag, before heading out.
On his journey to get to the ‘Sunrise’, he is going to cut through woods, trees,
and other places that in some way represent a barrier, to make it through.
This is going to be a metaphor for the boy’s suicidal thoughts, as it is a thing
he needs to get through, in order to reach the ‘Sunrise’ which is a metaphor
for life after the suicidal thoughts.
4. Lighting
I plan on filming this video in the lighting that is appropriate to a sunrise, so it’s
almost-daylight, but still has some darkness.
In order to be able to see the protagonist right, I’m going to use my ipod-torch
to illuminate the singer a little, but not enough that it’s blaringly obvious that
it’s what I’m doing.
And for the shots of the band, I’m going to include a backlit stage, with the
band almost silhouetted against a white light.
Costume
Seeing as my video is going to include a lot of walking, and moving through
woods, the protagonist is going to need to have some comfortable clothing, as
he Is supposed to have just gotten out of bed and thrown on clothes (Right).
However, the band is going to have more ‘formal’ clothing, such as jeans, and
button-down shirts. I am also thinking of doing it where the band are dressed
in a simple white t-shirt and black jeans (Left)
5. Camera & Editing
This video is going to include a lot of shots, but each one is going to last about
five to seven seconds long. This is so the audience can get a decent look at
each shot, and understand the story at the same time.
The main focuses, though, will be the protagonist’s emotions, and the band as
they play the song.
However, I don’t want the video to focus too much on this, so I’m going to add
in some tracking shots, and some long to medium shots of the protagonist
during the journey to the beach.
