Overview:
This documentary is about NQT (newly qualified teachers) and their experiences
teaching this past year.
Goal/Purpose of Film:
The purpose of this documentary is to enable the audience to gain a personal insight
into the life of a NQT. Whilst many students are aware of the pressure teachers face in
their job, NQTs lack the experience and knowledge that senior teachers have and may
have a weak/inferior stigma attached to them.
The biggest aims of this documentary include: allowing students to see how their
actions can have both a positive and negative impact on newly qualified teachers lives,
how NQT opinions of teaching have developed over the past year, why teaching is a
rewarding/challenging job, and also what makes people want to become a teacher.
Film outline:
The filmwill start with a title card ‘Student Teacher’ will fade in first in capitals, then
underneath in capitals also ‘_____________’
Fade in with an establishing shot focusing on the “Plumstead Manor” sign
Tracking shot of camera going around the school/hall way (non-diegetic sound – song)
3 NQT teachers will introduce themselves in voice over - will briefly talk about why they
wanted to pursue a teaching career, where they gained their teaching qualification
Ms T – will explain her role as someone who overlooks the NQTs, how she got the
position, why she became a teacher
A jump cut will then occur to inside the school building where the focus
teacher/character will be identified. From here, a dolly shot will be used to follow the
said teacher into their classroom with a voice over introducing the teacher/answering a
question that one of the interviewers has asked (joyful music playing over this scene)
Scene to cut to a medium close up of the same teacher sitting against a plain
background where the voice over will continue into diegetic sound where the interview
is happening, have the camera slightly to the side of the interviewee at an angle, then
have another on the other side that will be a consistent extreme close up
Shot of random classroom and teacher teaching with voice over of someone speaking –
providing facts about first year teachers (not positive – statistical evidence – how many
drop out after their first year), use of melancholic music to create tone – assumption
that people have is that teaching is difficult
Cut to a classroom – different environment to the other class, new teacher, low angle
shot of teacher, cut to pan of students, voiceover of new teacher speaking about their
experiences. Place writing on the image – introducing the teacher and the class, have
this fade in and out, on screen for approximately 6 seconds. Jump cut to the same
teacher speaking in a medium close up shot (the same as the previous teacher) on a
plain background where the speaking will continue (continuity editing).
Random students talking about what they think about NQTs – if they think any different
of them to other teachers, if they know what an ‘NQT’ is, if they can name any of the
NQTs (to be filmed by a hand held camera shot/tripod – try both, to be filmed at lunch –
need a busy environment – diegetic sound only)
Jump cut to Ms T in her office sitting at her desk – talking about what she has to do in
her job, her experience of working with NQTs
Fade out – close up of each teacher saying one word that describes their first year, non-
diegetic sound playing over
Fade to black, end of film
positive experiences first – why they like the job – seeing students achieve/enjoy their
subject, if it’s rewarding)
and what they think about their job having been a teacher for a year)

Treatment

  • 1. Treatment Overview: This documentary is about NQT (newly qualified teachers) and their experiences teaching this past year. Goal/Purpose of Film: The purpose of this documentary is to enable the audience to gain a personal insight into the life of a NQT. Whilst many students are aware of the pressure teachers face in their job, NQTs lack the experience and knowledge that senior teachers have and may have a weak/inferior stigma attached to them. The biggest aims of this documentary include: allowing students to see how their actions can have both a positive and negative impact on newly qualified teachers lives, how NQT opinions of teaching have developed over the past year, why teaching is a rewarding/challenging job, and also what makes people want to become a teacher. Film outline: The filmwill start with a title card ‘Student Teacher’ will fade in first in capitals, then underneath in capitals also ‘_____________’ Fade in with an establishing shot focusing on the “Plumstead Manor” sign Tracking shot of camera going around the school/hall way (non-diegetic sound – song) 3 NQT teachers will introduce themselves in voice over - will briefly talk about why they wanted to pursue a teaching career, where they gained their teaching qualification Ms T – will explain her role as someone who overlooks the NQTs, how she got the position, why she became a teacher A jump cut will then occur to inside the school building where the focus teacher/character will be identified. From here, a dolly shot will be used to follow the said teacher into their classroom with a voice over introducing the teacher/answering a question that one of the interviewers has asked (joyful music playing over this scene) Scene to cut to a medium close up of the same teacher sitting against a plain background where the voice over will continue into diegetic sound where the interview is happening, have the camera slightly to the side of the interviewee at an angle, then have another on the other side that will be a consistent extreme close up

Shot of random classroom and teacher teaching with voice over of someone speaking – providing facts about first year teachers (not positive – statistical evidence – how many drop out after their first year), use of melancholic music to create tone – assumption that people have is that teaching is difficult Cut to a classroom – different environment to the other class, new teacher, low angle shot of teacher, cut to pan of students, voiceover of new teacher speaking about their experiences. Place writing on the image – introducing the teacher and the class, have this fade in and out, on screen for approximately 6 seconds. Jump cut to the same teacher speaking in a medium close up shot (the same as the previous teacher) on a plain background where the speaking will continue (continuity editing). Random students talking about what they think about NQTs – if they think any different of them to other teachers, if they know what an ‘NQT’ is, if they can name any of the NQTs (to be filmed by a hand held camera shot/tripod – try both, to be filmed at lunch – need a busy environment – diegetic sound only) Jump cut to Ms T in her office sitting at her desk – talking about what she has to do in her job, her experience of working with NQTs Fade out – close up of each teacher saying one word that describes their first year, non- diegetic sound playing over Fade to black, end of film
