Tracing the roots of kenya’s tourism: Archaelogical and Colonial DimensionDr. Ray' Mutinda, N.
Since Kenya’s independence in 1963, its tourism industry has grown to become one of the most significant sectors of the country’s economy. As one of the top African tourist destinations, Kenya boasts of a rich mix of tourism markets and products including the African wildlife safari, white sand beaches, MICE products, culture and heritage. Underlying such growth and market-product portfolio is a rich heritage founded on archaeology and colonial history. As observed by Crompton (quoted in Jommo 1987) tourism in Kenya was instituted during the colonial period as a “European hedonocracy”- a leisure-oriented activity for which only Europeans were equipped culturally, economically and socially to take part in, and around which they reserved for themselves the right to undertake entrepreneurial activity. Added to this colonial heritage, Kenya’s tourism industry is dotted with rich archaeological sites showcasing various stages of the development and evolution of early man. Within this heritage features pre-historic fossil heritage dating over 100 Million years ago including such important sites like Koobi Fora, a prehistoric site that has produced a great wealth of fossil evidence on the evolution of man dating over 4.2 million years; the Hyrax Hill, a neolithic excavation site dating from 1500 B.C; Pate Island, an ancient port town where evidence of human activity dating back from the 7th century has been found; and Olorgesailie, where the skull of Homo erectus was unearthed. Others include Kariandusi, Fort Jesus, and other religio-colonial period historic sites. These archaeological sites have become key cultural and heritage tourist attractions in Kenya. This paper traces the contribution of archaeology and colonial history to the evolution and development of tourism in Kenya.

42. • IATA was founded in Havana, Cuba, in April 1945. It is
the prime vehicle for inter-airline cooperation in
promoting safe, reliable, secure and economical air
services - for the benefit of the world's consumers.
• The international scheduled air transport industry is
now more than 100 times larger than it was in 1945. Few
industries can match the dynamism of that growth,
which would have been much less spectacular without
the standards, practices and procedures developed
within IATA.
• The modern IATA is the successor to the
International Air Traffic Association founded in the
Hague in 1919 - the year of the world's first
international scheduled services
• Definition of IATA's aims than had existed before 1939.
• To promote safe, regular and economical air
transport for the benefit of the peoples of the world, to
foster air commerce, and to study the problems
connected therewith;
• To provide means for collaboration among the
air transport enterprises engaged directly or indirectly
in international air transport service;
• To cooperate with the newly created International Civil
Aviation Organization (ICAO - the specialised United
Nations agency for civil aviation) and other international
organisations.
44. • AVIATION SAFETY
Aviation safety is a key objective of ICAO and is part of
the work in the following Sections and programmes:
• Aerodromes, Air Routes and Ground Aids (AGA) Section
• Accident Investigation and Prevention (AIG) Section
• Flight Safety (FLS) Section
• Aviation Medicine (MED) Section
• Flight Safety and Human Factors
• Safety Management
• Flight Safety Information Exchange (FSIX)
46. UFTAA
• The United Federation of Travel Agents’ Associations
(UFTAA) emanates from the Universal Federation of
Travel Agents’ Associations created in Rome, Italy, on
November 22nd, 1966. UFTAA was originally founded
as a result of a merger of two large world
organisations, FIAV and UOTAA, recognising the need
to unify travel agencies and tour-operators into one
international federation.
• In 1989, coming from Brussels, UFTAA set up its
General Secretariat in the Principality of Monaco.
• UFTAA started its operation as a Confederation on
January 1st, 2003. It is a non-profit Confederation of
international scope, representing Regional Federations
comprising some 80 national associations.
47. Activities
To unite and consolidate the Federations of Travel
Agents’ National Associations and to globally enhance the
interests of their members ;
- To represent the travel agents’ activities before various
world-wide bodies, governmental authorities and
suppliers ;
- To work towards the adoption of measures that will ease
travel for the consumer and to offer services to its
member federations ;
- To be an investigation and information centre supporting
the member Federations’ work and to offer information for
technological development ;
- To offer, as a voluntary mechanism, an arbitration
service which assists in solving conflicts resulting from
commercial relations for which amicable settlement
cannot be reached ;
49. Activities

50. CHICAGO CONVENTION
The Convention on International
Civil Aviation, also known as the
Chicago Convention, established
the International Civil Aviation
Organization (ICAO), a
specialized agency of the United
Nations charged with
coordinating and regulating
international air travel. The
Convention establishes rules of
airspace, aircraft registration
and safety, and details the rights
of the signatories in relation to
air travel. The Convention also
exempts air fuels from tax.
51.
52. • First Freedom - The right to fly and carry traffic over
the territory of another partner to the agreement
without landing. Almost all countries are partners to
the Convention but some have observed this freedom
better than others. When the Korean airliner lost its
way over Soviet air space a few year ago and was shot
down, the Soviet Union (among other offenses!)
violated this First Freedom.
• Second Freedom – The right to land in those countries
for technical reasons such as refueling without
boarding or deplaning passengers.
• Third Freedom - The right of an airline from one
country to land in a different country and deplane
passengers coming from the airline’s own country.
• Fourth Freedom - The right of an airline from one
country to land in a different country and board
passengers traveling to the airline’s own country.
• Fifth Freedom - This freedom is also sometimes
referred to as 'beyond rights'. It is the right of an
airline from one country to land in a second country, to
then pick up passengers and fly on to a third country
where the passengers then deplane.
54. Why my Package is good ?
• In our package we have charged less cost of
travel.
• We tried to include maximum destinations in
a short period, and which are easy to reach.
• We also arranged host for you in each country
so that you don’t have to take an additional
guide from there.
