Modes of transport include air, rail, road, water, cable, pipeline and space. Transport infrastructure consists of fixed installations like roads, railways, airways, waterways, canals, and pipelines that connect terminals for passengers and cargo like airports, railway stations, bus stations and seaports. Until the Industrial Revolution, transport was slow and costly, but inventions like the steam engine and its application to rail transport in the 19th century allowed land transport to operate independently of human or animal power. Leonardo da Vinci produced many studies and designs of flight by observing birds and attempted to build machines to achieve flight based on his original designs.
