This presentation looks at the current situation with respect to RSS and then reports upon the findings of the ticTOCs and Gold Dust projects. We will look at the lessons learnt from developing the ticTOCs service, and also report on two iterations of the Gold Dust development and use cycles. We will deliver an appraisal of the effectiveness of the raft of techniques being employed by Gold Dust. How effective are current data mining and pattern matching techniques for such an application?
How useful is RSS metadata in this context? These findings will be of considerable pertinence both for future services which may use RSS Feeds, and for future research and development in the area of adaptive personalisation using RSS.

Data Publishing: The research community needs reliable, standard ways to make the data produced by scientific research available to the community, while giving credit to data authors. As a result, a new form of scholarly publication is emerging: data publishing. Data publishing - or making data reusable, citable, and accessible for long periods - is more than simply providing a link to a data file or posting the data to the researcher’s web site. We will discuss best practices, including the use of persistent identifiers and full data citations, the importance of metadata, the choice between public data and restricted data with terms of use, the workflows for collaboration and review before data release, and the role of trusted archival repositories. The Harvard Dataverse repository (and the Dataverse open-source software) provides a solution for data publishing, making it easy for researchers to follow these best practices, while satisfying data management requirements and incentivizing the sharing of research data.

Developed with the intention of building community for chemists ChemSpider allows its users to deposit data including structures, properties, links to external resources and various forms of spectral data. Over the past three years ChemSpider has aggregated almost 3000 spectra including Infrared and Raman Data and continues to expand as the community deposits additional data. The majority of spectral data is licensed as Open Data allowing it to be downloaded and reused in presentations, lesson plans and for teaching purposes. This presentation will provide an overview of our efforts to build a structure-indexed online database of spectral data, initiate a call to action to the community to participate in improving this resource for the community at large and discuss how such a resource could be used as the basis of a spectral game to teach students spectral interpretation.

ChemSpider is one of the chemistry community’s primary online public compound databases. Containing tens of millions of chemical compounds and its associated data ChemSpider serves data tens of thousands of chemists every day and it serves as the foundation for many important international projects to integrate chemistry and biology data, facilitate drug discovery efforts and help to identify new chemicals from under the ocean. This presentation will provide an overview of the expanding reach of the ChemSpider platform and the nature of the solutions that it helps to enable. We will also discuss the possibilities it offers in the domain of crowdsourcing and open data sharing. Over the past five years the Royal Society of Chemistry has become world renowned for its public domain compound database that integrates chemical structures with online resources and available data. ChemSpider regularly serves over 50,000 users per day who are seeking chemistry related data. In parallel we have used ChemSpider and available software services to underpin a number of grant-based projects that we have been involved with: Open PHACTS – a semantic web project integrating chemistry and biology data, PharmaSea – seeking out new natural products from the ocean and the National Chemical Database Service for the United Kingdom. We are presently developing a new architecture that will offer broader scope in terms of the types of chemistry data that can be hosted. This presentation will provide an overview of our Cheminformatics activities at RSC, the development of a new architecture for a data repository that will underpin a global chemistry network, and the challenges ahead, as well as our activities in releasing software and data to the chemistry community.

We present to you the research conducted by the DS4C (Data Science for Covid-19) team who made a huge and detailed level of South Korea Covid-19 data available to a wider community. The DS4C dataset was one of the most impactful datasets on Kaggle with over fifty thousand cumulative downloads and 300 unique contributors. What makes the DS4C dataset so potent is the sheer amount of data collected for each patient. The Korean government has been collecting and releasing patient information with unprecedented levels of detail. The data released includes infected people’s travel routes, the public transport they took, and the medical institutions that are treating them. This extremely fine-grained detail is what makes the DS4C dataset valuable as it makes it easier for researchers and data scientists to identify trends and more evidence to support hypotheses to track down the cause and gain additional insights. We will cover the data challenges, impact that it had on the community by making this data available on a public forum and conclude it with an insightful visual representation.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
