ticTOCs is a freely available service that aggregates and provides access to the tables of contents (TOCs) of over 11,000 scholarly journals from more than 410 publishers. It allows researchers to keep up-to-date with newly published articles, find and view TOCs, link to full texts where available, and export TOC feeds to feed readers. The service aims to facilitate access to important new research by providing a personalized web environment for discovering and organizing journal TOCs.

We often hear that we are in a transitional phase of open access publishing, but it is not always clear how we will reach a fully open access environment, what that will look like and what it means for scholarly research. This webinar will draw insights from a librarian survey we ran in 2015, discussing areas where librarians feel a lack of confidence and presenting technical and policy developments.

As an important component of the scholarly record, research data, software and code are increasingly managed as research outputs in their own right, though are not typically subject to peer review.
In line with the broader ‘open research’ movement there is a growing impetus for datasets, software and code to be curated in repositories, openly available wherever possible subject to relevant legal and ethical constraints.
Data repositories such as Figshare, Dryad and Zenodo routinely allocate DOIs for deposited data while many universities in the UK also allocate and mint DOIs in their nascent institutionally based data repositories through Datacite which means they will be automatically tracked by altmetric.com in the same way as journal articles.
While the repository infrastructure continues to develop and there are pockets of best practice, data sharing and reuse is not yet fully established across UK HE. Reward mechanisms are immature and data citation, for example, is limited and not easy to track. Clarivate Analytics’ Data Citation Index coverage of UK based repositories is still relatively low and, as a subscription based product, is not widely accessible. COUNTER compliant downloads can be derived from IRUSdata-UK (beta) which currently tracks 27 UK based institutional data repositories.
Altmetrics therefore offers a low barrier method to track engagement with datasets and, in lieu of a more formal process, might be regarded as a type of informal peer review. We have undertaken a preliminary analysis of repositories that participate in IRUSdata-UK (beta) using it as a source of DOIs to run against the altmetric.com API to discover to what extent research data, software and code is being shared.
This talk will present these preliminary results and explore how and why datasets are being shared across the various platforms tracked by altmetric.com and potential barriers. It will consider how data repository managers can encourage and facilitate data sharing through social media networks, blogs and “data journalism” and will draw on the Research Data Management (RDM) Engagement Award at the University of Leeds which is exploring linking RDM with the Open Science movement via the Wikimedia suite of tools. What does the altmetric data currently tell us about how research data is being linked to this global platform
Crossref as a source of open bibliographic metadata
Presentation at the 18th International Conference of the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics, July 12-15, 2021.
Several initiatives have been taken to promote the openly availability of bibliographic metadata of scholarly publications in Crossref. We present an up-to-date overview of the availability of six metadata elements in Crossref: reference lists, abstracts, ORCIDs, author affiliations, funding information, and license information. Our analysis shows that the availability of these metadata elements has improved over time. However, it also shows that many publishers need to make additional efforts to realize full openness of bibliographic metadata. To illustrate the value of open metadata, we use the metadata in Crossref to construct and visualize a large citation network of scholarly journals.

Increased access to the data generated is fuelling increased consumption and accelerating the cycle of discovery. But the successful integration and re-use of heterogeneous data from multiple providers and scientific domains is a major challenge within academia and industry, often due to incomplete description of the study details or metadata about the study. Using the BioSharing, ISA Commons and the STATistics Ontology (STATO) projects as exemplar community efforts, in this breakout session we will discuss the evolving portfolio of community-based standards and methods for structuring and curating datasets, from experimental descriptions to the results of analysis.

This presentation examines the results of recent studies assessing the free availability of scholarly publications during different time periods and the proportion of Open Access Papers published in peer-reviewed journals at different levels. Different types of growth in freely available papers have been
identified and analyzed. It also addresses best practices for institutional repository management and examines opportunities and challenges faced by the OA model.

Kirsty Meddings CrossrefResearch funders are increasingly setting the agenda for scholarly communications, mandating certain editorial practices such as open peer review and data sharing, elevating the importance of preprints, and advocating for better use of existing community-run infrastructures like those maintained by Crossref, DataCite, and ORCID. This session will explain what’s new and next for the funding and infrastructure space, introducing a key project around persistent identifiers and metadata for grants, including use of facilities. Whilst the scholarly community has adopted standard persistent identifiers (PIDs) — for people (e.g. ORCID), content (e.g. DOIs, PMCIDs), and soon organizations (ROR.community) including funders (the Funder Registry) — the record of the award is not captured in a consistent way across funders worldwide. And they are not easily linked up with the literature or the researchers or the institutions. Harmonizing grant identifiers with one common universal schema will not just help people better measure reach and return, but will offer researchers a system that works more smoothly and accurately. In this session, hear from funding organizations about what they want, learn about the findings from the grant identifier pilot, and discover the next steps for this initiative.re3data.org presented at 3rd RDA Plenary

Hybrid journals: Ensuring systematic and standard discoverability of the late...
An important current challenge for research information providers is ensuring the automated discovery of Open Access (OA) content in hybrid journals [1, 2, 3]. Until now there has been no discovery service able to systematically identify the crucially important free full-text availability of OA articles regardless of where and how such articles have been published (i.e. in fully Open Access journals and hybrid journals [4,5,6]. The urgent solution to this challenge has been recognised through the creation of various initiatives and task forces initiated by national and worldwide institutions [7, 8 , 9]. A solution is important because hybrid journals are proliferating. Nearly all of the major publishers now provide such journals in order to take advantage of recent changes in research funder requirements, and to be competitive in the new OA business model. By working with a sample of eight important publishers and by using standard elements that are in agreement with the task force instigated by NISO to resolve this issue in a standardised manner, we have prototyped a new systematic identification of that essential information by embedding article-level OA metadata in Table of Content (TOC) RSS feeds. Our research has found that this is an efficient method for enabling M2M discovery of OA content. In this work we present the initial results obtained, the impact produced by our proposal in the systematic discoverability of OA content from those eight publishers' hybrid journals, and a demonstration of subject clustering of aggregated OA articles within a freely available journal current awareness service - JournalTOCs.

Transforming Current Awareness Through RSS
This presentation looks at the current situation with respect to RSS and then reports upon the findings of the ticTOCs and Gold Dust projects. We will look at the lessons learnt from developing the ticTOCs service, and also report on two iterations of the Gold Dust development and use cycles. We will deliver an appraisal of the effectiveness of the raft of techniques being employed by Gold Dust. How effective are current data mining and pattern matching techniques for such an application?
How useful is RSS metadata in this context? These findings will be of considerable pertinence both for future services which may use RSS Feeds, and for future research and development in the area of adaptive personalisation using RSS.
