Tranformation into a Confident Woman in The Secret life of...
In The Secret Life of Bees, author Sue Monk Kidd, portrays the transformation of Lily Owens from a child burdened with the guilt of her mother's
death to a strong and confident young woman, as a result of living with May, Rosaleen, and August. Lily, burdened with the guilt of her mother's
death becomes terrified of her father, T. Ray. August and May guide Lily's growth to a life of faith and devotion while Rosaleen remains as Lily's
constant companion. As Lily finds her true identity she transforms into a strong and confident young woman which helps her face the world and
all of its challenges. Lily, feeling burdened with the guilt of her mother's death becomes terrified of her father, T. Ray. Lily, feeling burdened with
the guilt from the circumstances of her mother's death when she is told that she killed her mother. T. Ray scares Lily when he says "We turned
around and you were standing holding the gun. You picked it up off the floor. Then it just went off."(Kidd, 19). Lily's only memory of her mother
is this time, when her mother died, when T. Ray confirms Lily's suspicions, this makes Lily unable to forgive herself. Lily becomes terrified of her
father T. Ray when he abuses Lily. T. Ray abuses Lily by making her kneel on grits, "I walked toward them with those feathery steps you expect of a
girl in Japan, and lowered myself to the floor determined not to cry, but the sting was already gathering in my eyes." (24). Lily was so afraid of T.

Kidd: A Short Story
First of all, Lily's feelings toward her father change when he expresses himself and screams that her mother never wanted her. T–Ray (her father) was
angry at her after being in jail and was what drove Lily into leaving. A way T–Ray expressed himself was this way "Not funny? He yelled. "Not funny?
Why, it's the funniest goddamn thing I ever heard: you thinking your mother is your guardian angel." He laughed again. "The woman could have cared
less about you." Kidd, the author, showed hyperbole in the statement by T–Ray thinking it as a hilarious statement even though it's something that was
hurtful for his daughter. Kidd also expressed hyperbole by using the word "guardian angel" when in fact all she just thought of Deborah was as her

Analysis Of The Secret Life Of Bees By Sue Monk Kidd
The Secret Life Of Bees, written by Sue Monk Kidd, should be considered a classic because of its unique way of relating the characters and the story
line to the reader's emotions and to history. In The Secret Life Of Bees– and all books– descriptive detail and skillful writing is crucial. The principle
reason this story is a classic is because of how Sue Monk Kidd was able to use a metaphor throughout the entire story. Bees represent society and life
and without help from other bees and the queen bee, the hive dies– an incredible and unique way to show the readers the importance of appreciating life.
Classics need numerous features to be considered one of the highest quality, and The Secret Life Of Bees has very many. Italo Calvino, Nelson ... Show

Kidd Alvarez Summary
I am reading one of Matt De La PeГ±a top novels, I will save you. In chapter one, it takes place at the beach. It never said in the story where the beach
was at. The main character is Kidd. He have no mom or dad, and he is leaving at a group home. He also carries around a philosophy of life book and
write lessons he learned in it. Next is the second main character, Olivia. Kidd is in love with her and she is his best friend. But, Oliva might love Devon.
Now that brings me to the last main character, Devon. He is Kidd best friend and worst enemy. He is Kidd worst enemy because he is always flirting
with Olivia. This book is kind of set up like a diary. There no dates tho, just a title. I don't like diary books because I rather read a book with

Analysis Of The Secret Life Of Bees By Sue Monk Kidd
The Secret Life of Bees written by Sue Monk Kidd, is set in South Carolina, 1964. This coming–of–age story follows the journey of Lily Owens who
escaping her life under the authority of her abusive father to unravel the truth about her mother's past. A few days before Lily and Rosaleen flee,
Lily returns from her job selling peaches and walks in the house to find Rosaleen fixated on the television. President Johnson was on and "signed his
name on a piece of paper, using about ten ink pens to get it done" (Kidd 20). Then they both heard the announcement, "Today, July second 1964, the
president of the United States signed the Civil Rights Act into law..." and Lily turned to Rosaleen who looked "disbelieving and happy" (Kidd 20).
On July 2 1964, the Civil Rights Act was passed, banning segregation in public places based on race, gender, nationality, and religion. Prior to the
Civil Rights Act, segregation was a prominent issue in the southern states, denying equal rights to people of color. In TheSecret Life of Bees, the Civil

There were many activists who started to stand up for black rights like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. who both took a public stand in
order to defy the law. In The Secret Life of Bees Lily Owens had a special relationship with her maid Rosaleen and thought of her as her mother
figure. At church, Lily heard the minister talk about civil rights and how Reverend Martin Luther King "Got arrest last month in Florida for wanting
to eat in a restaurant" (Kidd 21). Lily feels uneasy about her community's opinion on black people because they do not believe they will ever receive
equal rights as white people. Martin Luther King's actions play a role into the story because it takes place during the Civil Rights Movement and
although the law was passed, Lily and Rosaleen's community still has a hard time treating Rosaleen equally and with

Secret Life Of Bees By Sue Monk Kidd
In the book Secret life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd , the main character Lily Owens has two compelling desires, ambitions, obligations, or influences
that affect the outcome of the story. As the story unfolds, Lily is faced with an abusive dad and a mother who she loves very much. At the young age
of four, Lily, still being a child, accidentally shoots and kills her mother during a confrontation. Now, the young child has two huge, impactful
life–changing forces to deal with the rest of her life. She struggles with both of these until she decides to do something about it and go into the amazing
world and figure out the truth behind it all. Since she was so young at the time of the events, she didn't remember what went down. She is searching the

She is entrapped with the ideas floating in her mind as one can see here. "That night I lay in bed... for the first ten thousand years". She also has an
abusive dad who is taking all of his anger out on his daughter which consisted of beating and kicking her as punishment. She is so fed up with this
action, She decides to do something about it. This leads to the second force or burden that she deals with, Lily leaving her abusive dad at such a
young age. She constantly mentions that she wants to leave but her dad is resilient to her not leaving."Heavens to betsy, what's all this talk about
you leaving? Nobody wants you to leave, Lily, till your good and ready". Once she is fed up, Lily runs away with her nanny Rosaleen behind her
dad's back. The Boatrights were bee farmers who were very comforting and nice when taking them in. While she is running away from her dad, the
real reason she is leaving is to find answers about what happened that night with her mother. Her father eventually finds where she is and tracks her
down and beats her. While she is receiving a beating her father tells her that she was the one that killed her mother, but the shooting was on accident.
Her father at that time realizes that he was taking his anger out on her for no reason and that she is still her daughter and didn't deserve it. One big
thing holding her back it the racism that she encounters

Why Is William Kidd Alive
William Kidd
England in the 18th century, pirates were alive, and the british empire was expanding. There were many new techniques that were brought in from
immigrants that increased the productivity. Many pirates sailed the waters in search for treasures.
Scotland 1654, William Kidd was born. Little did his parents know how big his future would be. William grew up to be a pirate, Kidd and his crew set
sail around England in the 1700's. Kidd and his crew attacked the Quedagh Merchant, a large American ship located on the Indian Ocean, he found
out he was on the wrong side of the british government. He was later hanged in London, 1707. Before Kidd died he kept a journal about his life. " I do
not care so much for the death of my gunner, as for other passages of my voyage, for i have good friends in England who will bring me off for that."
Kidd writes in his journal. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Over time he has gained way more popularity. Due to the treasure and his signal he has gained so much popularity.
I think Kidd made a bad decision robbing the ship because it got him killed. If i were alive then or a pirate then i would have not robbed the ship. If
Kidd was alive now he probably wouldn't do a pirate, due to the fact there aren't many pirates now days. If he lived in America then they wouldn't have
been able to rob the sip because they would be inlined with the American government.
In the book, the main character was a cabin boy while in real life Kidd was the captain. Kidd was very famous and many people favored him. He was
nice to everyone who was nice to him. The book and Kidds life are kind of similar because they both sailed on ships. They both had a big crew, but
in the novel the pirates and british betrayed eachother while in real life Kidd and his crew worked together.

Kidd Blackmails Haven Summary And Analysis
Basic Story The film begins with Tracy Lord whose wedding plans are foiled by the arrival of her of her ex husband, Dexter Haven, and two
journalists who pose as Dexter's friends ( Connor and Imbrie). Tracy was married to Haven, but divorced him because he did not measure up to her
standards and he was a drunk. She was now marrying Kittredge who is a wealthy public figure. Tracy does not want her wedding in the newspaper
because it is a private affair. However, Sidney Kidd, ,the publisher of Spy Magazine, makes Connor and Imbrie cover the story. Kidd blackmails
Haven, who is employed by the magazine to get Connor and Imbrie into the wedding in exchange of withholding a story about Tracy's father's
infidelity and being able to get revenge... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tracy has high standards for herself and the people around her. In the beginning of the movie, we see Tracy wearing a pant suit. This indicates a
sense of dominance. The first traditional feminine outfit that Tracy wears is when she is mocking the idea of the model hostess.2 The ruffles on
the dress represent foolishness and her distaste of the situation; she was pretending to be someone she was not. When Tracy feels weak and
powerful less, she is half dressed like in a swimsuit. However when she is dressed up in elaborate gowns, she is calm and vigorous. The dress she
wears for the party before the day of the wedding was the most beautiful gown she's worn in the movie, she exceeds the expectations for herself of
being powerful and of high class. However, the color of the gown (white) represents that the internal battle Tracy is having on whether to marry
George or do the right thing. Her wedding dress is a mixture of dominance, similar to her pant suits, and a sense of helplessness. The broad shoulders
of her dress represents that she is not willing to settle for her happiness, but the loose and flowy parts of her dress represent the feeling of not wanting
to disappoint her loved

Cross And Kidd Summary
Cross and Kidd I found this story amusing as well as sad. This story is about two women who have known each other since kindergarten and they
now reside in a nursing home. Mrs, Cross and Mrs. Kidd have had a friendship that has lasted over eight decades. The two went to school together,
they got married, both had children, and both lost their spouses. They now reside in a nursing home. The way the author describes the different
types of residence that live there, I would also say this is a skilled nursing facility and mental health facility. In this facility there are residents of all
ages. Mrs. Cross and Mrs. Kidd have lunch together everyday, they play cards or scrabble. They began to have a daily routine. One day Mrs. Cross

Kidd Understanding Human Origins Summary
Kidd, like many European Christians, explains the importance of Genesis on understanding human origins. Kidd points out the significance of Genesis
by stating that this first book of the Bible explains "the origins of mankind, the peopling of the world by the sons of Noah, and the confusion of
language" (Kidd, 19). Kidd then begins to explain how historians were tempted into researching how legitimate the book of Genesis was and what the
underlying similarity between the races was. Race quickly became a theological problem that challenged the Bible and Christian teachings. It was
important for European Christians to prove the unity of race because it was fundamental to Christian theology (Kidd, 26). If race was challenged and
later stated that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was seen as a reliable source in understanding the world and how it came to be. Kidd begins to focus on this idea and whether the Bible was a
reliable source or if it only covered the history of certain part, or parts, of the world (Kidd, 55). This phenomenon can most be seen with the discovery
of the New World and Native Americans. Kidd explains how the Bible did not mention anything of the New World and most importantly the people
living there. Other commentators of this idea questioned which lineage, if any, did the Native Americans descend from and why did the Bible ignore
the New World. This spawned an entire new form of questioning the Bible and its credibility. It once again challenged and undermined the Christian
authority. It challenged the Christian authority by further questioning if Noah and his sons populated the entire earth (Kidd, 57). European Christians
then turned to other parts of the Bible to make sense of this New World and its "new people".
Throughout history, European Christians have used personal interpretations of the Bible to answer questions of human origins. These interpretations of
biblical passages have also pushed to question biblical authority and its accountability. This has proved that it is significant to learn these specific
events in history because these events allow us to understand how historians tried so hard to make sense of the Bible and ensure its authority. Biblical
passages like the stories of Cain and Noah's sons have paved interpretations for European Christians that lead to certain answers of human origins over

The Secret Life Of Bees By Sue Monk Kidd
Many people in their life will feel compassionate towards another person or character in a novel because of their personality, behaviors and actions.
In The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the protagonist, Lily, has a father referred to as T. Ray. In the beginning of the book, typical readers
may label T. Ray as the antagonist because he is described as an abusive, cold hearted character. After reading and learning more about his past, T. Ray
can eventually be considered a sympathetic character. With the death of his wife and the constant reminder of her every time he looks at his daughter,
T–Ray has reasons for being portrayed as a cruel and resentful person.

Ray. One night, Lily had walked out of the house and she was caught by T. Ray who thought she went out to meet some boy. The next morning,
"[Rosaleen] looked down at my knees and stopped sweeping. They were swollen with hundreds of red welts, pinprick bruises that would grow into
blue stubble across my skin. 'Look at you child. Look what he's done to you,' she said" (Kidd 25). Because the reader knows very little about T. Ray
in the beginning of the novel, he or she may label him as the antagonist by just reading this part. However, the reader's opinion may change after
reading more about his past. When T. Ray had found Lily after she ran away, when she sees him she thinks to herself, "He seemed crazy with
anguish, reliving a pain he'd kept locked up all this time, and now that it was loose, it had overwhelmed him. I wondered how far he'd go to try and
take Deborah back. For all I knew, he might kill her" (Kidd 295). Deborah's abandonment from T. Ray had left a huge impact on him. T. Ray was

The Invention Of Wings By Sue Monk Kidd
Having no rights, being owned by other people, and being punished as your "master" sees fit. This was the reality for many people around the
world in the early 1800 's. In the novel The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd, this is illustrated clearly from the views of a white woman, Sarah
GrimkГЁ, and the perspective of a black woman, Hetty "Handful" GrimkГЁ who was under the Grimke's ownership. Sarah opposed the way of life for
Southerners in Charleston where slavery was a common occurrence in every white's household. With her abolitionist views, Sarah treats Handful as if
she was any other white. In The Invention of Wings, slavery is seen from two perspectives: one is from the whites who see it as necessary and useful

(Kidd 14). Making this kind of comment in front of a large family gathering brought shame to the GrimkГЁ household. Sarah knew this and still
took this risk to stand for her abolitionist views. Even at a young age Sarah has always opposed the use of slaves. After being told she has no
choice but to take Handful she treats Handful the best she can. This causes a relationship to spark between the two of them which was unheard of
in that time period. In addition to Sarah refusing her birthday present, which was Handful, she takes it a step further and teaches Handful how to
read. Turning, I watched her carry the lantern to my dressing table, light swilling about her feet. When she set it down, I said, "Hetty, shall I teach
you to read?" (Kidd 57). Being able to read and write was considered powerful, which is why it was against the law to teach a black person to read.
Only the elite should have that ability. Sarah taking this risk for Handful demonstrates how willing she is to "free" Handful in any way she can. The
uncanny relationship between the two, sparks a set of values in them that will continuously shape their lives.
As Sarah grew older and her relationship with Handful

n the novel, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, Lily a 14 year old girl is abused by her father and runs away. Throughout Lily's life she
was sheltered from blacks and always thought of them as a lower class in society and her in a higher class because of her skin color. As a result she
has limited respect for blacks. There are many motifs in this book that change the mindset of Lily, one of which is the Virgin Mary. The symbol the

Sue Monk Kidd was a book that really showed me how African American people were actually treated in the early 1960s. How they could actually
be beaten just for not apologizing to a white person. They were treated very cruel by some people, but, not by all people. Lily Owens was a young
girl in the year 1964; who lived in South Carolina. She loved African American people. She loved how interesting they were, and she adored the
stories they had to tell. Her best friend was an African American woman who worked on her father's peach farm. That woman's name was Rosaleen,

entirely devastated when she committed suicide after finding out that her godson, Zach, had been arrested for a race related matter. It seemed
that after her twin, April, died when she was very young, May had been carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. So, she had to finally

Anecdotal Characters Of Kidd The Catcher
A storyteller, an anecdotal character named Geoffrey Crayon, starts the story. He discloses to us that, years prior, a couple of miles from Boston,
Massachusetts, kidd the Pirate covered an incredible measure of fortune. He made an arrangement with the fallen angel to secure the fortune,
however was never ready to come back to it, as he was caught and taken to England to be hanged as a privateer. Substantially later, in the year 1727, a
niggardly man named Tom walker lives close to the territory with hissignificant other, who is similarly as cash crazed. They are not famous with their
neighbors, as they frequently battle.
In the wake of spending the day in an inaccessible piece of the area, Tom Walker takes an alternate route back home through a marsh. He achieves a
relinquished Indian fortress, and in the wake of kicking a close–by skull left finished from the Indian wars with pioneers, infuriates a tall man shrouded
in ash who had evidently been watching him. Tom understands this is the man generally called old scartch, and after a long discussion in transit
home, Old Scratch declares that he has favored Tom and will enable him to get Kidd the Pirate's fortune on specific conditions. As a guarantee to
remain by his assertion, Old Scratch squeezes his finger into Tom's brow, leaving a dark, consumed stamp that he calls his "mark."

Queen Anne's Revenge Essay
Swoosh! Splash! Swish! A pirate ship sails through the salty ocean. Three pirate ships sail across the same deep glimmering marine. They all meet
around the cove, but they all get ready for rivalry. One ship starts dismissing their cannons at their enemies. Just then, the other two ships began to sail
away, but one cannonball proceeded towards one ship, and struck the ship leaving it to sink. Pirates used ships to get to their destination, and to be
ready for their enemies. First of all, the Queen Anne's Revenge was one of the most famous pirate ship. The Queen Anne's Revenge was originally
a French owned slave ship. The ship first name was "La Concorde De Nantes." It was found in 1996. Furthermore, the ship had 26 guns, and was
captured from the French merchants. Queen Anne's Revenge was one of the most powerful ships in American waters. The name "Queen Anne's
Revenge" comes from Queen Anne, who was one of the principal actors in the War of the Spanish Succession in which Blackbeard was likely a

Critics have said that is one of Pite best work. "Dark Matters" is as much a study of the human condition, and of the violence in nature – especially our
own natures. This dance tiptoes along the edge of hysteria, describing our clammy response to the unknown." (Johnson). Dark Matters explores violent
behavior and how all each person deals with their state of mind differently. However, there are some critics who believe the movement is unrealistic.
The movement lacks gravity because of constant rolls and drifts in the body. "The dancers in Kidd Pivot Frankfurt RM's new performance, Dark
Matters, at the Newmark Theatre, seem entirely unencumbered by the laws of physics. Their bodies float through space and slide and roll across the
ground like they've never known gravity or friction." (Scott). It is obvious that their movements took a lot of structure and discipline to perform.
Furthermore, the ending is what took everyone by surprise. This piece ended in a duet that was full on puppet like qualities. The movement was
constant and repetitive like someone was pulling the strings to control them. "The evening ends with a duet that's both puppet like and divinely
human. Taken with everything that came before it, you're left thinking about manipulation of every kind, and power, to the extent that anyone has it.
And that itself is powerful stuff." (Wisener). The ending left everyone in awe. It was tragic when the male lead died from a broken heart. In the end
the female lead began to pick at the dead man heart. This part was inhumane because she was sewing his heart back together hoping that he would
come back to life. (Dark Matters). Overall, great performance. Pite did a good job at imagining how she wanted her choreography and vision to come

The Oak Island Money Pit
The Discovery
The Oak Island Money Pit was discovered the summer of 1795 by Daniel McGinnis. He was drawn into the island by strange lights visible from his
house. Upon his investigation, he comes across a block and tackle hung directly over a circular indentation on the island's floor. Daniel, along with two
of his friends John Smith and Anthony Vaughan started to dig out the bizarre pit. Their curiosity is due to that time period being the pinnacle of the
"Golden Age of Piracy (Maritime Museum of the Atlantic)." In hopes of finding treasure, Daniel and his friends were the first of a long list of people to

Plausible Theories
Word about the Money Pit has spread since its discovery and people from all over North America were fascinated. From lawyers, businessmen, doctors,
actors and even a president was curious about the mysterious site. Many theories have been contemplated, but not one in particular has been fully
certified to be the truth. The most popular theories are those of pirates. Captain William Kidd was said to have admitted in burying treasure in the Oak
Island area before he was captured in 1699, but suspicions are that he would not have had enough money to construct the Money Pit. The other pirate
that is though to have established the Money Pit is Blackbeard. Blackbeard has been associated with Oak Island and that he has mentioned having an
underground treasure, "where none but Satan and [him]self can find it (Blackbeard)," but there is no evidence of the treasure being in Oak Island.
Another theory is that the Money Pit is simply a natural phenomenon. A part of the structure is unquestionably man–made because of the stone tablet
and the platforms every 10 feet, but the rest is thought to be a sinkhole, which would explain all of the flooding.
Conclusion
Today the secret of the Oak Island Money Pit remain unknown. The island's floor is marked by 200 years of digging by people in hopes of finding
the contents that lay within. Weather the Money Pit contains treasure or if it is merely a work of nature, the Oak Island Money Pit

Slave by definition is a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them. That about sums up what slavery really is in our mind
and is pretty much the definition that we all picture when we think about slaves and slavery. But this is not what slavery truly was within the
antebellum time period. Most of the slaves had a whole different outlook on the way they viewed, and acted and while living in their unfortunate
circumstances. This is one of the few things that will be discussed further on within this paper. The main concept of this paper will be to discuss slavery
in three sections; these sections will be discussing the types of people who were enslaved, and the nature of their bondage in the first section. The ...

The Secret Life Of Bees By Sue Monk Kidd
For our summer reading project, we read a novel by Sue Monk Kidd titled, The Secret Life of Bees. Throughout the book, we learn about a young
teen girl named Lily and her experiences of trying to escape an abusive father and free her nanny, Rosaleen. The author uses many clues to establish the
setting and time period of the novel, which happened to be in the early 60's. The story starts in a farm home where Lily's dad has Rosaleen take care
of Lily during the day as her nanny. When the Jim Crow Laws were in place, it was common to have an African American nanny in the household to
help with the children and chores. Another prime example is when Rosaleen decides to go cast her vote which hasn't been allowed to her before, and
when she does she is arrested for disrespecting white males. The author establishes the time period by drawing attention to the Civil Rights Acts and
showing a huge contrast between how African Americans were treated versus whites and the conflicts between race rights in this time period. The
author expresses this with officers and unfamiliar characters showing disrespect toward Rosaleen. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These laws were cruel and were against the recently released African American Slaves. Although all races should have been treated equally after
slavery ended, the racism didn't end as there were separation and hate based on skin color. African Americans could easily be put in jail for things
whites do just the same. A prime example is when Zach and all his friends got arrested for throwing a bottle at a white group of males, when the police
did not question the white males or get enough evidence of the

Personal Narrative Essay: The Kidd
"I'm trying," the Kidd snarled. "But this miserable bird wants to put his tail feathers in my face." I looked over and the macaw was now pacing
across his forehead. Captain Bluebird roared with laughter as I continued to ferociously kick and beat at the sea with my legs and fists using the last
of my strength to reach the shore. * * * We collapsed on the dark sand under the light of the silvery moon gasping for air and trembling with
exhaustion. Then once Captain Bluebird had regained his strength, he built a small blaze. "Gordok summoned that monster from the deep to murder
you," he said, sitting next to me. I watched the orange sparks from the fire curl and twist into the starry sky. Not sure why he wanted me know this,

I'd skidded to a stop, my left sneaker just barely missing the front spokes. I hadn't touched it. I hadn't even really breathed on it, I don't think, yet the
cycle began to teeter. Wobble. To tremble and to shake apart. One minute it was an aluminum road racer the next a heap of tiny gears and cogs
littering the pavement. I'm not exactly sure why, but I think it was my fault. Or there was the time I'd cut Miss Wee–Wee's grass and accidently on
purpose mowed straight through a patch of her prized pink petunias. I could've gone on and on, but I decided to put the brakes on self–loathing. "What
about my dad and Grandpa?" "They're of the same line." He winked at me. "Tomorrow, you and Mason must go and find the centaurs. They will help
you to understand how to defeat Gordok and save our kingdom." "Do the centaurs look like men with a horse's hindquarter?" Mason whispered. "I

The Secret Life Of Bees By Sue Monk Kidd
1964 was a year of great progress in the Civil Rights Movement, bringing about change to the lives of many. In order to cope before and after the
passing of the Civil Rights Act, a great number of people focused on the religious aspect of their lives, an aspect that is shared with the novel The
Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. In her historical fiction novel, Kidd narrates the story of how Lily Melissa Owens, a motherless girl, was
surrounded by change during 1964. Lily's journey to find information about her mother leads her to August, May, and June, otherwise known as the
Calendar Sisters. The events that happen at the Calendar Sister's home bring change not only to Lily, but to many others as well. Sue Monk Kidd's The
Secret Life of Bees is a novel filled with the potential of gaining insight into the novel by examining its thematic, symbolic, and religious aspects.
The Secret Life of Bees features a rich layer of themes that allows the reader to digest the novel deeply. A theme that provides content for this layer
is motherhood. Throughout the novel, Lily sees the impact that having a mother, the one person that you can depend on, can have in life. At the very
end of the novel, when Lily is adopted by August and the Daughters of Mary, she feels the love of each of her new mothers, and the combined
internal love coming from herself and Mary. With all of this newly discovered love that she had received so little of in the past, Lily said, "All these

Ray is dishonest person. This is because he never tell Lily that the truth about Deborah's death. For example, "Its time you knew what happened to
her, and I want you to hear it from me. Not from people out there talking." (17) This shows that T. Ray doesn't want Lily to hear about Deborah's
death from other people because he doesn't want Lily to figured out the truth. "' The day she died, she was cleaning out the closet,' he said." (18) "'
You thinking your mother is your guardian angel." He laughed again. ' The woman could have cared less about you.'....' you listen to me,' he said,
his voice deadly calm. 'The truth is, your sorry mother ran off and left you. The day she died, she'd come back to get her things, that's all. You can
hate me all you want, but she's the one who left you.'" (39) This shows that T. Lay tells Lily about Deborah death. Firstly, he told her that she was
cleaning out the closet. Then, he said that she was came back to get her things. T. Lay also tells Lily that Deborah never loved Lily, and she
abandon her. He told Lily that multiply story which is he made up most of them, and it makes Lily straggle about her mother's death more. Also, he

Secret Life of Bees Essay Growing up changes you in more ways than you realize. It can be a good change like new privileges. It could be bad
things like more responsibility. In the book The Secret Life of Bees all changes are experienced. Especially because the main character, Lily, has
grown up without a mother. And the main problem in the book is about Lily growing up and trying to find out more about her mother and how she was
killed.
In the Secret Life of Bees growing up really changes the people. Such as when T–Ray at first loved Lily's mom.A quote from August states that "You
know,Lily, people can start off one way,and by the time life gets to them they end up completely different"(Kidd 248). That means as he grew up and
changed T–Ray had lost feelings for Deborah,Lily's mom. Another way that growing up changes you is in the way April and May had acted. When
April was alive May was as happy as could be. "When April was fifteen she took our fathers shotgun and killed herself"(97).April had grown up she
realized because of her race she wouldn't ever have a fair chance in the world. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whether it be knowledge, feeling, or even privileges. In The Secret Life of Bees Sue Monk Kidd expresses that idea very often. Especially in Lily's love
life. For when Lily was little she didn't really have much feelings. Besides the basic like–dislike ones. But when Zack had shown up she had gained a
new feeling, love. And as the book says "I couldn't restrain myself from touching his face, the place where his dimple caved into his skin"(135).
WhatLily was really saying was that she loved him. And the dimple was what started it all. You gain knowledge too while growing up. Lily had
gained knowledge about her mother that she never would have understood as a child. "Degorah was pregnant with you"(249). That was a quote from
August on why Lily's mom got married. And if someone told Lily that when she was a child she would have never

The Secret Life Of Bees By Sue Monk Kidd
Today I will be talking about the book named "The Secret Life of Bees," written by Sue Monk Kidd. This book is about a young girl who has to
deal with an abusive father and in return she runs away with her black babysitter to a beekeeper she believes may know the answers to her mothers
dead. In this blog post I will be talking about the racial part of the book and discussing my opinions. The book mentions the race of the people
many times because it is set in 1964, during the time in which many black people had to go through many deterrents. The author of "The Secret
Life of Bees" does a great job of fitting the time and place with the situation of the main character, Lily. The reason for this is because Lily's journey
officially starts when she and Rosaleen leave to go to town for the voting. The voting was a big deal for the black people, such as Rosaleen because it
would allow them to fully have the opportunity to be equal with those who were white. In the book, the Civil Rights Act was mentioned a couple...

This relates to the book because many times in the book they would show how innocent black people would be put in jail for doing nothing. A
great example can be when Zach was arrested because another black male had hit the white man. It shows that any black male that was suspicious
would be put in jail without evidence. This law also affects Lily because it was a turning point when Rosaleen leaves with Lily and she spills
chewed tobacco on the the white males shoes. This events leads to them two being put in jail and the affect of that is when Lily gets out, she leaves
home and helps Rosaleen escape. This event marks Lily's coming of age because she becomes more rebellious and goes against her fathers will. This
event also reflects on Lily's life because she starts off with no mother and by the end of the book she has many loving "mothers" to care for

Symbolism In The Mermaid Chair, By Sue Monk Kidd
Abstract 'Island' is an emblem of both remoteness and nirvana in both East and West. In the East, to the Buddha, island is a positive symbol of
revitalization in the core of the ocean of Samsara. In Commonwealth feminist writers such as Anita Desai and Sue Monk Kidd, the island becomes a
metaphor for a woman's quest for freedom and identity. The Mermaid Chair is a vividly imagined novel about the spirit and the ecstasies of the body;
one that illuminates a woman's self–awakening with the brilliant and power that only a writer of Kidd's ability could conjure. An island is a land
mass that is often smaller than a continent. An island is normally surrounded by water completely. Egret island is a thin place, in the Celtic sense of
the phrase, a place where the visible reality of everyday life and the invisible reality of the sacred interest, where mighty forces work mysteriously to
bring about transformation. The main conflict in The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd is the mental and physical illness of Jessie Sullivan's– the main
character, one of those unambiguous women with no desire to disturb the universe. Jessie stands at the bow of a ferry, looking across Bull's Bay
towards Egret island , a tiny barrier island off the coast of South Carolina ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Symbolism In Monk Kidd
Monk Kidd characterizes T. Ray as a savage and a resentful widower. Before of his wife's death, it seemed as if he was mistreating his wife, but the
reason is unclear why he would be hurting her (7). For example, while his wife is packing he comes upstairs and shakes her to stop her from
leaving him. T. Ray clearly shows the audience that he is not one to solve problems by simply talking, but rather by physical abuse. However as the
story slowly progresses, it seems as if he loathes his daughter, Lily more than his wife. At the beginning, the reader learns how T. Ray refuses to buy
his daughter new clothes, celebrate her birthday, and creates harsh punishments when she misbehaves. From the back story, it seems that T. Ray is

Rosaleen is not afraid to stand up what she believes in. For instance, when she walks to town with Lily, she is not afraid to tell the three white men
that she is going to go register to vote (31). Rosaleen seems to symbolize the civil rights movement occurring throughout the United States. Rosaleen
truly believes all African Americans should have the same rights as the average white American. Rosaleen is also seen to be the onlymother figure Lily
has had after his mother's death. Rosaleen is not afraid to stand up to T. Ray for Lily. In particular, Rosaleen bought Lily a purple biddy that
insisted on pooping wherever it wanted in the living room; therefore, T. Ray became very upset, but Rosaleen stood up for Lily and told him at
least it was not pooping all over the house (11). Rosaleen shows that she is not afraid of anyone, no matter how tough they look and act. Rosaleen is
also the one character Lily falls back on when she feels sad and unloved. Rosaleen loves Lily and treats her as if she was her daughter, possibly
because she feels pity for Lily –– due to the fact that Lily lost her mother and T. Ray never goes out of his way to make time for her. This reason
could also be why Rosaleen goes to Tiburon with Lily instead of staying in

Book Report On The Secret Life Of Bees By Sue Monk Kidd
Books have a way of bringing people together, by showing different points of view. One of the most inspiring books I have read, is The Secret Life of
Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. This contemporary novel of a young girl's journey to discover herself, has the ability to engage readers from many different
walks of life. I believe that everyone in my generation should read this novel, as this coming of age story will leave readers with a new outlook on
family and how people can change.
The Secret Life of Bees takes place in the deep South during the 1960's. This was a time of social turmoil in America, and the author recreates a
shockingly realist setting for the story. Lily, the main character, has been brought up by her abusive father. Shortly after

Analysis Of The Secret Life Of Bees By Sue Monk Kidd
In The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, Lily Owens, a 14 year old girl from South Carolina, is forced to run away from her abusive father, T.
Ray. She must learn how to live her life as Lily Williams in the home of three black women, August, May, and June Boatwright. She needs to find out
who her mother is before it's too late, but will she? I chose three quotations that show the theme of the story. For starters, the main character is shown
to want to learn more about her mother because she hasn't seen her since she was a small child. "She must have been there sometime in her life to
have owned this picture. And if she was, a person might remember her, you never know" (Kidd 51). This quotation shows that Lily wants to find more

When a parent dies, any child will cling to the other parent for emotional support and comfort for dealing with such a loss. In Lily's case, she wanted
her fathers support more than anything but he was cold, abusive, and stuck in the past, that he wasn't able to give her anything except for take his anger
out on her, when she disobeyed him. Although if someone does not get that support from the otherparent, and if someone else is there that is
understanding and kind, its amazing to see how much you can start to really rely on them and grow a close relationship. When Lily deals with the loss
of her mother and the poor treatment of her father, she doesn't know what to do with herself, she has a load of all different kind of emotions, and it
really harms her well–being. Lily deals with guilt because she has visuals that she was the one that killed her mother, and on top of that she has her
father telling her that her mother left her and she just abandoned her, making Lily feel unimportant and then at the same time guilt. Rosaleen is the
closest role model that Lily has for a mother, Rosaleen cares and sticks up for Lily but Lily doesn't really have the mother–daughter connection with
her. Although Rosaleen provides comfort for Lily, she helps her with her father and in return Lily defends Rosaleen as well as save her life from the
hospital after she got beaten.

Character Analysis Of Sue Monk Kidd
Sue Monk Kidd does a great job of writing an interesting and engaging novel jam packed with an amazing setting and lovable characters. Each
character providing their own very interesting and dynamic character arc throughout the story. Characters like Lily Owens, Zachary Taylor and June
Boatwright, experience lots of progression in both as a character or in their personality and in the audience's feelings towards them. Characters like
Rosaleen and May Boatwright that make you sympathize for the situation that they are in or the struggles that they face. Each time May experiences
emotional distress, you can't help but feel bad for her and hope that she gets better. Whenever Rosaleen is discriminated by police officers, you can't
help but feel anger and frustration for the wrongs of the past. With such a stellar cast of characters to choose from I would say that August Boatwright
is the character that Sue Monk Kidd makes me admire. The way Sue Monk Kidd portrays the wise and caring character that is August is just very
compelling to me. August's importance to the plot of the novel and to the characters of the novel is very clear. August Boatwright is the moral "glue"
to almost every main character in the Boatwright house before and after Lily Owens and Rosaleen arrive. Without August Boatwright, there's no one to
give May the attention and care that she needs. No other character except for maybe Lily shows any sort of patience and compassion for May like
August does.

William Kidd ran away from home when he was 7. After fending for himself 20 years later he became a high ranking privateer. How did he become
so successful with such a rough childhood? Some say he had to steal food from vendors. All we know is he was a miracle both when sailing and when
fending for himself at a very young age. My biography is about the Beginning, Ending, Achievements, and Goals of Captain William Kidd.
Captain William Kidd was born in Greenock, Scotland during 1654(?). He had a light red hair and considerably short. When he turned 7 he ran from

In this passage, Dustin Kidd opens the reading by admitting to the readers his addiction to social media. Kidd confronts that his morning routine

today's society. He explains how society persuades people that they are "too skinny" or "too poor" and will never be "good enough." Not only does
he describe the cons of social media, but he also justifies how social media can be a powerful device. The internet can be used as a platform that

Sue Monk Kidd : A Memory Of The Past
Sue Monk Kidd: A Memory of the Past Authors tend to display their personalities and personal stories throughout their work. While the words on the
paper may read one thing, the deeper connections and references hidden in the writing leads to even more nail–biting questions. Sue Monk Kidd was
influenced to write her novel The Secret Life of Bees by the dreadful experiences she faced during her childhood, an early passion of literature, and
finally her exploration of religious beliefs. Her childhood was most notably affected in the summer of 1964, when she witnessed public cruelty to
blacks that, no doubt, haunted her for the rest of her life. Clearly, her first hand experiences that summer played an important role of setting it as a
Civil Rights backdrop in The Secret Life of Bees. Sue Monk Kidd's dreadful experiences in the summer 1964 impacted the writing of her novel as the
events she saw were duplicated into the major plot line. "She vividly remembers the summer of 1964 with its voter registration drives, boiling racial
tensions, and the erupting awareness of the cruelty of racism" ("Reading"). Growing up, she never could fully digest the littered memories that
constantly showed flashbacks reminding her of the gruesome outbreaks. Even though African–Americans prominently populated her childhood home
of Sylvester, Georgia, there were still huge racial divides ("Reading"). The deeply ingrained segregation between white and black southerners was
easily observed in her said

Y: She is dedicated to accomplishing her goal.
R: Sarah refuses Israel's marriage proposal; her final chance of a life.
R: She proves herself to be independent and prepared to welcome failure by taking risks. quote: "'a faded–looking woman in middle age would choose

The Devil And Tom Walker
Washington Irving was the first American author to find success both in Europe and in America and was considered the father of American literature
because of his writing which helped shape American literature. Known for his works which were inspired by German folklore which was introduced
to him by Sir Walter Scott, some of Irving's works included a facet of the supernatural. A couple of his most well
–known publications which depicts
this are "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "The Devil and Tom Walker". In Irving's classic short story "The devil and Tom Walker" he wrote
about greed, a basic fundamental human instinct, and how the devil can use it as leverage against us humans which probably helped with his
popularity because of the time which this story was published. In 19th century American society religious superstition was a norm and was even
widely accepted as fact. The setting and the tone of the story are introduced right away at the beginning of the story, it takes place in New England
near Boston Massachusetts. Irving chose this setting probably because it was around the area where he was born but most importantly it was
relatable to his American audience. The description of the inlet which leads to the swamp establish a theme which shows the reader that this place is
not one of a lake house but rather a swamp which we would assume is a dark and gloomy setting. He also mentions Captain Kidd and his treasure
which was hidden under one of the old gigantic trees

August and May guide Lily's growth to a life of faith and devotion while Rosaleen remains as Lily's constant companion. Lily's only memory of her mother is this time, when her mother died, when T. Ray confirms Lily's suspicions, this makes Lily unable to forgive herself. Lily becomes terrified of her father T. Ray abuses Lily by making her kneel on grits, "I walked toward them with those feathery steps you expect of a girl in Japan, and lowered myself to the floor determined not to cry, but the sting was already gathering in my eyes." • 2. Kidd: A Short Story First of all, Lily's feelings toward her father change when he expresses himself and screams that her mother never wanted her. T–Ray (her father) was angry at her after being in jail and was what drove Lily into leaving. A way T–Ray expressed himself was this way "Not funny? He yelled. "Not funny? Why, it's the funniest goddamn thing I ever heard: you thinking your mother is your guardian angel." He laughed again. "The woman could have cared less about you." Kidd, the author, showed hyperbole in the statement by T–Ray thinking it as a hilarious statement even though it's something that was hurtful for his daughter. • 3. Analysis Of The Secret Life Of Bees By Sue Monk Kidd The Secret Life Of Bees, written by Sue Monk Kidd, should be considered a classic because of its unique way of relating the characters and the story line to the reader's emotions and to history. In The Secret Life Of Bees– and all books– descriptive detail and skillful writing is crucial. The principle reason this story is a classic is because of how Sue Monk Kidd was able to use a metaphor throughout the entire story. Bees represent society and life and without help from other bees and the queen bee, the hive dies– an incredible and unique way to show the readers the importance of appreciating life. Classics need numerous features to be considered one of the highest quality, and The Secret Life Of Bees has very many. Italo Calvino, Nelson ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The passage I recognized those ideas in the novel of The Secret Life Of Bees was when August and Lily were taking care of the bees. That section of the book intrigued me and added to my life because of the dialogue, setting, and mood. The main character is Kidd. He have no mom or dad, and he is leaving at a group home. He also carries around a philosophy of life book and write lessons he learned in it. Next is the second main character, Olivia. Kidd is in love with her and she is his best friend. But, Oliva might love Devon. Now that brings me to the last main character, Devon. He is Kidd best friend and worst enemy. He is Kidd worst enemy because he is always flirting with Olivia. This book is kind of set up like a diary. There no dates tho, just a title. This indicates a sense of dominance. The first traditional feminine outfit that Tracy wears is when she is mocking the idea of the model hostess.2 The ruffles on the dress represent foolishness and her distaste of the situation; she was pretending to be someone she was not. When Tracy feels weak and powerful less, she is half dressed like in a swimsuit. However when she is dressed up in elaborate gowns, she is calm and vigorous. The dress she wears for the party before the day of the wedding was the most beautiful gown she's worn in the movie, she exceeds the expectations for herself of being powerful and of high class. However, the color of the gown (white) represents that the internal battle Tracy is having on whether to marry George or do the right thing. • 10. Kidd Understanding Human Origins Summary Kidd, like many European Christians, explains the importance of Genesis on understanding human origins. Kidd points out the significance of Genesis by stating that this first book of the Bible explains "the origins of mankind, the peopling of the world by the sons of Noah, and the confusion of language" (Kidd, 19). Kidd then begins to explain how historians were tempted into researching how legitimate the book of Genesis was and what the underlying similarity between the races was. Race quickly became a theological problem that challenged the Bible and Christian teachings. It was important for European Christians to prove the unity of race because it was fundamental to Christian theology (Kidd, 26). If race was challenged and later stated that ... Kidd begins to focus on this idea and whether the Bible was a reliable source or if it only covered the history of certain part, or parts, of the world (Kidd, 55). This phenomenon can most be seen with the discovery of the New World and Native Americans. Kidd explains how the Bible did not mention anything of the New World and most importantly the people living there. Other commentators of this idea questioned which lineage, if any, did the Native Americans descend from and why did the Bible ignore the New World. This spawned an entire new form of questioning the Bible and its credibility. It once again challenged and undermined the Christian authority. It challenged the Christian authority by further questioning if Noah and his sons populated the entire earth (Kidd, 57). European Christians then turned to other parts of the Bible to make sense of this New World and its "new people". Throughout history, European Christians have used personal interpretations of the Bible to answer questions of human origins. These interpretations of biblical passages have also pushed to question biblical authority and its accountability. This has proved that it is significant to learn these specific events in history because these events allow us to understand how historians tried so hard to make sense of the Bible and ensure its authority. Biblical passages like the stories of Cain and Noah's sons have paved interpretations for European Christians that lead to certain answers of human origins over ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the protagonist, Lily, has a father referred to as T. Ray. In the beginning of the book, typical readers may label T. Ray as the antagonist because he is described as an abusive, cold hearted character. After reading and learning more about his past, T. Ray can eventually be considered a sympathetic character. They were swollen with hundreds of red welts, pinprick bruises that would grow into blue stubble across my skin. 'Look at you child. Look what he's done to you,' she said" (Kidd 25). Because the reader knows very little about T. Ray in the beginning of the novel, he or she may label him as the antagonist by just reading this part. However, the reader's opinion may change after reading more about his past. When T. Ray had found Lily after she ran away, when she sees him she thinks to herself, "He seemed crazy with anguish, reliving a pain he'd kept locked up all this time, and now that it was loose, it had overwhelmed him. I wondered how far he'd go to try and take Deborah back. For all I knew, he might kill her" (Kidd 295). Deborah's abandonment from T. Ray had left a huge impact on him. T. • 12. The Invention Of Wings By Sue Monk Kidd Having no rights, being owned by other people, and being punished as your "master" sees fit. This was the reality for many people around the world in the early 1800 's. In the novel The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd, this is illustrated clearly from the views of a white woman, Sarah GrimkГЁ, and the perspective of a black woman, Hetty "Handful" GrimkГЁ who was under the Grimke's ownership. Sarah opposed the way of life for Southerners in Charleston where slavery was a common occurrence in every white's household. Making this kind of comment in front of a large family gathering brought shame to the GrimkГЁ household. Sarah knew this and still took this risk to stand for her abolitionist views. Even at a young age Sarah has always opposed the use of slaves. After being told she has no choice but to take Handful she treats Handful the best she can. This causes a relationship to spark between the two of them which was unheard of in that time period. In addition to Sarah refusing her birthday present, which was Handful, she takes it a step further and teaches Handful how to read. Turning, I watched her carry the lantern to my dressing table, light swilling about her feet. When she set it down, I said, "Hetty, shall I teach you to read?" (Kidd 57). Being able to read and write was considered powerful, which is why it was against the law to teach a black person to read. Only the elite should have that ability. Sarah taking this risk for Handful demonstrates how willing she is to "free" Handful in any way she can. The uncanny relationship between the two, sparks a set of values in them that will continuously shape their lives. As Sarah grew older and her relationship with Handful ... The tradition of worshiping the wooden statue continued through time and when the time came for another session of worshiping, the sisters opened their arms to Lily to come pray with them. It goes south when Lily faints when about to touch the statue.this shows that Lily wasn't ready to play to an important black figure in history. Lily, later in the book, tries to touch the statue and succeeded. The readers see this as the turning point in the novel. Book Report On The Secret Life Of Bees By Sue Monk Kidd Elizabeth Nosek Nosek Page 17–26–2015 English, Summer Reading "The Secret Life of Bees" By: Sue Monk Kidd "The Secret Life of Bees" by: Sue Monk Kidd was a book that really showed me how African American people were actually treated in the early 1960s. How they could actually be beaten just for not apologizing to a white person. They were treated very cruel by some people, but, not by all people. Lily Owens was a young girl in the year 1964; who lived in South Carolina. She loved African American people. She loved how interesting they were, and she adored the stories they had to tell. Her best friend was an African American woman who worked on her father's peach farm. That woman's name was Rosaleen, and she helped Lily feel better all the time when she was sad. Especially, when her father abused her. Lily thought Rosaleen was her only friend, until she ran away to a place called... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I loved how she always showed a love for everything and knew everything was living. I loved how she lured roaches out of the house with graham crackers and marshmallows. I loved her idea of the Wailing Wall where she could go and put papers of prayers for people in the wall. I was entirely devastated when she committed suicide after finding out that her godson, Zach, had been arrested for a race related matter. It seemed that after her twin, April, died when she was very young, May had been carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. So, she had to finally let it all go. My least favorite character in the story was T. Ray. I hated the way he treated Lily and everyone else in life. I especially hated when he made Lily kneel on the grits for an hour as a punishment. Those grits had hurt Lily so bad that her knees had swollen up! I was very proud of Lily when she ran away from him. He was very abusive to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Anecdotal Characters Of Kidd The Catcher A storyteller, an anecdotal character named Geoffrey Crayon, starts the story. He discloses to us that, years prior, a couple of miles from Boston, Massachusetts, kidd the Pirate covered an incredible measure of fortune. He made an arrangement with the fallen angel to secure the fortune, however was never ready to come back to it, as he was caught and taken to England to be hanged as a privateer. Substantially later, in the year 1727, a niggardly man named Tom walker lives close to the territory with hissignificant other, who is similarly as cash crazed. They are not famous with their neighbors, as they frequently battle. In the wake of spending the day in an inaccessible piece of the area, Tom Walker takes an alternate route back home through a marsh. He achieves a relinquished Indian fortress, and in the wake of kicking a close–by skull left finished from the Indian wars with pioneers, infuriates a tall man shrouded in ash who had evidently been watching him. Tom understands this is the man generally called old scartch, and after a long discussion in transit home, Old Scratch declares that he has favored Tom and will enable him to get Kidd the Pirate's fortune on specific conditions. As a guarantee to remain by his assertion, Old Scratch squeezes his finger into Tom's brow, leaving a dark, consumed stamp that he calls his "mark." "The evening ends with a duet that's both puppet like and divinely human. Taken with everything that came before it, you're left thinking about manipulation of every kind, and power, to the extent that anyone has it. And that itself is powerful stuff." (Wisener). The ending left everyone in awe. It was tragic when the male lead died from a broken heart. In the end the female lead began to pick at the dead man heart. Captain William Kidd was said to have admitted in burying treasure in the Oak Island area before he was captured in 1699, but suspicions are that he would not have had enough money to construct the Money Pit. The other pirate that is though to have established the Money Pit is Blackbeard. Blackbeard has been associated with Oak Island and that he has mentioned having an underground treasure, "where none but Satan and [him]self can find it (Blackbeard)," but there is no evidence of the treasure being in Oak Island. • 20. The Secret Life Of Bees By Sue Monk Kidd For our summer reading project, we read a novel by Sue Monk Kidd titled, The Secret Life of Bees. Throughout the book, we learn about a young teen girl named Lily and her experiences of trying to escape an abusive father and free her nanny, Rosaleen. The author uses many clues to establish the setting and time period of the novel, which happened to be in the early 60's. The story starts in a farm home where Lily's dad has Rosaleen take care of Lily during the day as her nanny. When the Jim Crow Laws were in place, it was common to have an African American nanny in the household to help with the children and chores. Another prime example is when Rosaleen decides to go cast her vote which hasn't been allowed to her before, and when she does she is arrested for disrespecting white males. The author establishes the time period by drawing attention to the Civil Rights Acts and showing a huge contrast between how African Americans were treated versus whites and the conflicts between race rights in this time period. The author expresses this with officers and unfamiliar characters showing disrespect toward Rosaleen. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This book is about a young girl who has to deal with an abusive father and in return she runs away with her black babysitter to a beekeeper she believes may know the answers to her mothers dead. In this blog post I will be talking about the racial part of the book and discussing my opinions. The book mentions the race of the people many times because it is set in 1964, during the time in which many black people had to go through many deterrents. The author of "The Secret Life of Bees" does a great job of fitting the time and place with the situation of the main character, Lily. The reason for this is because Lily's journey officially starts when she and Rosaleen leave to go to town for the voting. The voting was a big deal for the black people, such as Rosaleen because it would allow them to fully have the opportunity to be equal with those who were white. • 26. Symbolism In The Mermaid Chair, By Sue Monk Kidd Abstract 'Island' is an emblem of both remoteness and nirvana in both East and West. In the East, to the Buddha, island is a positive symbol of revitalization in the core of the ocean of Samsara. In Commonwealth feminist writers such as Anita Desai and Sue Monk Kidd, the island becomes a metaphor for a woman's quest for freedom and identity. The Mermaid Chair is a vividly imagined novel about the spirit and the ecstasies of the body; one that illuminates a woman's self–awakening with the brilliant and power that only a writer of Kidd's ability could conjure. An island is a land mass that is often smaller than a continent. An island is normally surrounded by water completely. Egret island is a thin place, in the Celtic sense of the phrase, a place where the visible reality of everyday life and the invisible reality of the sacred interest, where mighty forces work mysteriously to bring about transformation. The main conflict in The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd is the mental and physical illness of Jessie Sullivan's– the main character, one of those unambiguous women with no desire to disturb the universe. • 32. Character Analysis Of Sue Monk Kidd Sue Monk Kidd does a great job of writing an interesting and engaging novel jam packed with an amazing setting and lovable characters. Each character providing their own very interesting and dynamic character arc throughout the story. Characters like Lily Owens, Zachary Taylor and June Boatwright, experience lots of progression in both as a character or in their personality and in the audience's feelings towards them. Characters like Rosaleen and May Boatwright that make you sympathize for the situation that they are in or the struggles that they face. Each time May experiences emotional distress, you can't help but feel bad for her and hope that she gets better. Whenever Rosaleen is discriminated by police officers, you can't help but feel anger and frustration for the wrongs of the past. With such a stellar cast of characters to choose from I would say that August Boatwright is the character that Sue Monk Kidd makes me admire. The way Sue Monk Kidd portrays the wise and caring character that is August is just very compelling to me. August's importance to the plot of the novel and to the characters of the novel is very clear. August Boatwright is the moral "glue" to almost every main character in the Boatwright house before and after Lily Owens and Rosaleen arrive. Without August Boatwright, there's no one to give May the attention and care that she needs. No other character except for maybe Lily shows any sort of patience and compassion for May like August does. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How did he become so successful with such a rough childhood? Some say he had to steal food from vendors. All we know is he was a miracle both when sailing and when fending for himself at a very young age. My biography is about the Beginning, Ending, Achievements, and Goals of Captain William Kidd. • 34. Rhetorical Analysis On Duster Kidd In this passage, Dustin Kidd opens the reading by admitting to the readers his addiction to social media. Kidd confronts that his morning routine consists of checking his notification on his phone. However, the narrator flips the subject from his social media obsession, to the problems of today's society. He explains how society persuades people that they are "too skinny" or "too poor" and will never be "good enough." Not only does he describe the cons of social media, but he also justifies how social media can be a powerful device. The internet can be used as a platform that enables people to stand up for themselves. After reading this passage, I realize that I support the Dustin Kidd's main ideas. The use of social media can have both negative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Rhetorical Analysis Essay On Kidd The selection of details that Kidd uses to develop Lily are figurative language and tone. Lily feels alone in this world. She is ostracized at school, treated with an absence of love and lives day to day knowing that she has committed irreversible acts. When she thinks about her mother all of these complications melt away in the warm allure she feels. In the passage Lily tries to remind T–Ray that it is her birthday and that she would enjoy and gift that all the other girls have at school. • 36. Sue Monk Kidd : A Memory Of The Past Sue Monk Kidd: A Memory of the Past Authors tend to display their personalities and personal stories throughout their work. While the words on the paper may read one thing, the deeper connections and references hidden in the writing leads to even more nail–biting questions. Sue Monk Kidd was influenced to write her novel The Secret Life of Bees by the dreadful experiences she faced during her childhood, an early passion of literature, and finally her exploration of religious beliefs. Her childhood was most notably affected in the summer of 1964, when she witnessed public cruelty to blacks that, no doubt, haunted her for the rest of her life. Clearly, her first hand experiences that summer played an important role of setting it as a Civil Rights backdrop in The Secret Life of Bees. Sue Monk Kidd's dreadful experiences in the summer 1964 impacted the writing of her novel as the events she saw were duplicated into the major plot line. "She vividly remembers the summer of 1964 with its voter registration drives, boiling racial tensions, and the erupting awareness of the cruelty of racism" ("Reading"). Growing up, she never could fully digest the littered memories that constantly showed flashbacks reminding her of the gruesome outbreaks. Even though African–Americans prominently populated her childhood home of Sylvester, Georgia, there were still huge racial divides ("Reading"). The deeply ingrained segregation between white and black southerners was easily observed in her said ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. The Devil And Tom Walker Washington Irving was the first American author to find success both in Europe and in America and was considered the father of American literature because of his writing which helped shape American literature. Known for his works which were inspired by German folklore which was introduced to him by Sir Walter Scott, some of Irving's works included a facet of the supernatural. A couple of his most well –known publications which depicts this are "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "The Devil and Tom Walker". In Irving's classic short story "The devil and Tom Walker" he wrote about greed, a basic fundamental human instinct, and how the devil can use it as leverage against us humans which probably helped with his popularity because of the time which this story was published. In 19th century American society religious superstition was a norm and was even widely accepted as fact. The setting and the tone of the story are introduced right away at the beginning of the story, it takes place in New England near Boston Massachusetts. Irving chose this setting probably because it was around the area where he was born but most importantly it was relatable to his American audience. The description of the inlet which leads to the swamp establish a theme which shows the reader that this place is not one of a lake house but rather a swamp which we would assume is a dark and gloomy setting. He also mentions Captain Kidd and his treasure which was hidden under one of the old gigantic trees ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
