The task force is charged with determining data elements for describing rare materials that are complementary to existing standards like DCRM and controlled vocabularies. Without consistent encoding and granular data, rare materials discovery is diminished. The task force proposes a framework of linked metadata elements for rare materials description that will enable improved discovery and utilization of existing standards. The framework includes over 50 proposed data elements across various categories for describing physical features, user engagement, production processes, and rights/restrictions.

2. RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee (BSC) task force charged:
• To determine a list of data elements complementary to the Descriptive
Cataloging of Rare Materials (DCRM) suite, the RBMS Policy Statements
for RDA, the Controlled Vocabularies for Use in Rare Book and Special
Collections Cataloging, and rare materials user needs
• To recommend solution(s) for incorporating these data elements into
library and archives data models, schemata, and tools
• To seek community partners for these solution(s)

3. The BSC is charged with enabling intellectual access to rare materials. The
BSC has produced two content standards for rare materials description that
reflect the specialized research needs of rare materials users:
• Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (DCRM): a suite of rules for
resource description
• Controlled Vocabularies for Use in Rare Book and Special Collections
Cataloging: a taxonomy of rare materials features and genres, and a
vocabulary for indexing these features and genres
BACKGROUND

4. Without a schema or ontology designed specifically for rare materials
description, two essential problems arise:
• Inconsistent encoding, which diminishes data interoperability
• High-level encoding, which diminishes discovery of granular content

5. A consistent and granular ontology for rare materials description will enable
improved discovery of our collections.
It will enable the full potential of content built with the DCRM suite and the
Controlled Vocabularies.
