Increasingly Java is being used to build applications that come with low-latency requirements. To meet this latency requirements developers have to have a deeper understanding of the JVM and the hardware so their code works in harmony with it. Recent trends in hard performance problems suggest the biggest challenge is dealing with memory pressure. This session demonstrates the memory cost of using XML parsers such as SAX and compares that with low-latency alternatives.
During the presentation (at JavaOne) John Davies & Kirk Pepperdine demonstrated processing of complex XML messages (7.4k FpML derivative trades which converted to Java using "classic" binding created 25k trades. The demonstration then compacted the 25k trades using C24's binary codec down to under 400 bytes, they then searched for random fields at over 21 million per second on a laptop. Zero objects were created during the search demonstrating the incredible performance that can be achieved with good optimisation. More code and papers can be found at http://sdo.c24.biz

Abstract:
Writing concurrent programs in the Java programming language is hard, and writing correct concurrent programs is even harder. What should be noted is that the main problem is not concurrency itself but the use of mutable shared state. Reasoning about concurrent updates to, and guarding of, mutable shared state is extremely difficult. It imposes problems such as dealing with race conditions, deadlocks, live locks, thread starvation, and the like.
It might come as a surprise to some people, but there are alternatives to so-called shared-state concurrency (which has been adopted by C, C++, and the Java programming language and become the default industry-standard way of dealing with concurrency problems).
This session discusses the importance of immutability and explores alternative paradigms such as dataflow concurrency, message-passing concurrency, and software transactional memory. It includes a pragmatic discussion of the drawbacks and benefits of each paradigm and, through hands-on examples, shows you how each one, in its own way, can raise the abstraction level and give you a model that is much easier to reason about and use. The presentation also shows you how, by choosing the right abstractions and technologies, you can make hard concurrency problems close to trivial. All discussions are driven by examples using state-of-the-art implementations available for the JVM machine.

JavaScript used to be confined to the browser. But these days, it becoming increasingly popular in server-side applications in the form of NodeJS. NodeJS provides event-driven, non-blocking I/O model that supposedly makes it easy to build scalable network application.
In this talk you will learn about the consequences of combining the event-driven programming model with a prototype-based, weakly typed, dynamic language. We will share our perspective as a server-side Java developer who wasn’t entirely happy about JavaScript in the browser, let alone on the server. You will learn how to use NodeJS effectively in modern, polyglot applications.
Simplicity, ease of use, clean syntax and clear semantics are the characteristics of a good DSL that enable the users to focus on the problem. It is non-trivial to define, develop and maintain a DSL, especially using traditional compiler techniques. The Ruby programming language solves this issue to a certain extent.

This talk describes the Fermilab Virtual Facility project, which incorporates bare-metal machines, our OpenNebula-based private cloud, and commercial clouds. After a number of years of research and development we are now doing stable production of data-intensive analysis and simulation for High Energy Experiments on the cloud.
I will pay special attention to the auxiliary services such as code caching, data caching, job submission, autoscaling, and load balancing that we are launching in the cloud. I will also review other significant developments by others in the field with which Fermilab is not directly involved.

Erlang promises faster implementation, way better maintenance and 4 times shorter code. VoltDB claims to be two orders of magnitude faster than its competitors. The two share many similarities: both are the result of scientific research and designed from scratch to address the new reality of parallel architectures with full force.
This talk presents the case for Erlang as server language, where it shines, how it looks, and how to get started. It details Erlang's secret sauce: microprocesses, actors, atoms, immutable variables, message passing and pattern matching. First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

Cross-facility research orchestration comes with ever-changing constraints regarding the availability and suitability of various compute and data resources. In short, a flexible data and processing fabric is needed to enable the dynamic redirection of data and compute tasks throughout the lifecycle of an experiment. In this talk, we illustrate how we easily leveraged Globus services to instrument the ACE research testbed at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility with flexible data and task orchestration capabilities.
We describe the deployment and use of Globus Compute for remote computation. This content is aimed at researchers who wish to compute on remote resources using a unified programming interface, as well as system administrators who will deploy and operate Globus Compute services on their research computing infrastructure.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.
