Respiratory protective equipment (respirators) is designed to prevent the wearer from breathing dust, gas or vapour. Proper selection of respiratory equipment is essential to provide adequate protection for workers. All respirators require cleaning and inspection after use, and have limited lifespan that depends on the work environment. Training is necessary for all workers using respiratory equipment to understand its proper use, limitations, and maintenance.

Respiratory Protection
It is sometimes necessary to work in atmospheres in which
hazardous dust or fumes are present. Ideally, the
contaminant should be controlled at source to minimise the
hazard, but this is not always possible so respiratory
protective equipment is provided for your protection.
Respiratory protective equipment (respirators) is designed to prevent the wearer from
breathing dust, gas or vapour. In atmospheres where there may be some form of oxygen
deficiency breathing apparatus may be specified. A respirator suitable for use in one set of
circumstances may be useless in another, so proper selection is essential if wearers are to
receive adequate protection. It is important to remember a respirator which gives perfect
protection against a dangerous fume will be useless if there is a lack of oxygen within the
atmosphere.
All RPE, with the exception of disposable types, requires cleaning, disinfecting and inspection
after use and before wearing by another person. Cartridges and filters have a limited life, which
can vary depending upon the environment in which they are used. Manufacturers'
recommendations should be closely followed. Equipment must be properly stored when not in
use. RPE along with PPE is the last line of defence; always treat it with the respect it deserves.
Training in the use and application of respiratory protective equipment is essential for all types
of equipment. All employees should have received a face fit test; the qualitative process
provides training on the limitations, installation and adjustment of the respirator as well as
determining that the respirators is compatible with the individual’s needs.
We specify that employees wear the minimum of a FFP3 respirator
for activities that generate airborne contaminants. These are
designed to protect against dust, mist and metal fumes.
