A team of scientists and explorers embarked on an expedition to walk on the shores of Nyiragongo Crater's lava lake in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the largest lava lake in the world. Expedition members made multiple descents to collect gas samples and take measurements in order to better understand the volcano's activity and predict future eruptions, with the goal of reaching the rim of the lava lake, which no one had survived before. During their close encounters with the lava, they had to take precautions against heat and gases, communicating by radio to stay safe in the dynamic conditions.
