IT Department Trends: Moving Away from OutsourcingModis
After years of layoffs and hiring freezes, companies are now expanding their internal IT departments due to several factors. There is a growing need for IT talent as software is now integral to all business functions, companies are creating their own software, big data analytics is important, and mobile is a major priority. While outsourcing was once popular to access skills and reduce costs, it now has disadvantages like communication difficulties, compliance issues, and global skills shortages. For companies where outsourcing is not an option, alternatives include competing aggressively for top talent, promoting from within, and working with staffing agencies to fill skills gaps.
The document discusses how adopting green IT practices can significantly benefit businesses through 60% growth and 40% improvements to environmental sustainability, according to research. Green IT involves implementing standards that reduce the negative environmental impacts of information technology. Overall, green IT is presented as a way for organizations to gain competitive advantages through increased growth while also helping the environment.
The document discusses the potential role of social media in emergency preparedness and disaster management. It notes that social media has become a primary means of communication and a major source of information for many. As such, emergency managers could leverage social media to help spread information quickly during disasters. However, there are also risks associated with relying on social media, as the information spread is dependent on who is publishing it. The document outlines a study conducted to better understand public expectations around emergency management's use of social media.
The global networks of economic wealth, political power and media will depend more and more on knowledge generation. Society will become more and more symbolic - that is, the capacity to produce and distribute goods and services will become increasingly dependent on the ability to create and manipulate electronic symbols. Companies will have to adapt to this new environment, although the process will not be easy. Companies will have to conceive of themselves as located within a shifting network of suppliers, competitors and consumers; their boundaries will accordingly be highly fluid. Permanent flexibility will be the key to survival in the new economy.

Here are the key points regarding avoiding the alignment trap in information technology:
- Many IT projects fail due to poor alignment between business and IT strategies and objectives. Alignment refers to the degree to which IT understands and supports the business priorities.
- There are four alignment quadrants companies can fall into:
1) Strategy execution - High alignment and high efficiency where IT is tightly linked to business strategy.
2) Order taker - High alignment but low efficiency. IT simply fulfills requests but lacks strategic perspective.
3) Technology leader - Low alignment but high efficiency. IT drives innovation without business input.
4) Disconnected - Low alignment and low efficiency. IT operates independently with little business value.

Here are a few counterarguments to consider adding to provide a more balanced argument:
- Wild horses are actually native to North America and were present here long before cattle and
farming. Their presence on rangelands predates human land use and they have a right to inhabit
areas designated by the Bureau of Land Management as wild horse territories.
- The population of wild horses is carefully managed by the BLM to keep numbers appropriate for
the designated areas. Reports show wild horses actually make up a very small percentage of the total
grazing biomass on western rangelands - less than 3% compared to cattle and sheep which account
for over 90%. So their impact is often exaggerated.
- Cattle grazing

The concept of harmony was also important to ancient Egyptians.
The Economic And Social Development Plan in Thailand since 1961 focused on economic development through expanding natural resources and the labor force. This led to growth in production, exports, employment, and income. However, issues arose from prioritizing income generation without regard for environmental and social costs. Less attention was given to developing human potential and local culture. In 1998, a seminar was held to generate ideas for Thailand's future development that envisioned a self-sufficient society respecting human rights.

LAND USE LAND COVER AND NDVI OF MIRZAPUR DISTRICT, UPRAHUL
This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
crucial for coordinated efforts across different administrative levels. Advanced technologies like

1. Too Far Ahead of the It Curve
[pic] Too Far Ahead of the IT Curve? By John P Glaser Introduction Question: Peachtree
Healthcare's patchwork IT infrastructure is in critical condition. Should the CEO approve a shift to
risky new technology or go with the time–tested monolithic system? Freshly showered and cooling
down after their squash game, Max Berndt drank iced tea with his board chairman, Paul Lefler.
Max, a thoracic surgeon by training, was the CEO of Peachtree Healthcare. He'd occupied the post
for nearly 12 years. In that time the company had grown–mainly by mergers–from a single teaching
hospital into a regional network of 11 large and midsize institutions, supported by ancillary clinics,
physician practices, trauma centers, rehabilitation facilities, ... Show more content on

Lately, however, worrisome developments were eroding Max's confidence that he could hold out
against Paul's brute–force prescription. Remember The African Queen? Days before, there had been
a meltdown of the clinical information system at Wallis Memorial Hospital in Decatur. (Wallis was
Peachtree's most recent addition.) Since Max had been lunching with his chief information officer,
Candace Markovich, when the alarm came through to her PDA, he drove her over to Wallis to
investigate. On the way, Candace reprised her concerns about ensuring uptime and performance
quality across Peachtree's patchwork infrastructure. "More and more, I feel like Humphrey Bogart in
The African Queen, trying to keep the blasted engine running on the boat," she said. "So much of
our energy and budget goes into just treading water. And the more we grow, the worse it gets." At
Wallis, Max saw cold panic on the faces of the IT staff as they rushed around trying to repair and
reboot the system. Doctors and nursing supervisors stood around looking helpless or angry,
sometimes a mix of both. Clinicians, having finally been persuaded to use information technology as
a primary tool in delivering care, now depended on it to work reliably. When it didn't cooperate,
they–and their patients–were basically screwed. Now Max witnessed the routine nightmare

Job Satisfaction in Information Technology Professionals Job satisfaction is very critical for both

One of the studies conducted at a company by McMurtrey, Grover, Teng, & Lightner discusses how

reduce job turnover (McMurtrey, Grover, Teng, & Lightner, 2002). Shortage of information
technology professionals has always existed. The technology in terms of both hardware and
software is developing at a speed of light, and along with the development technology is integrated
to every part of our lives. Whether it is big or small home appliance, or tools and hardware, they are
getting automated. At this day and age of automation and simplicity, to find skilled employee in the
designated field is like searching for a needle in a haystack, and losing a dissatisfied employee is not
a company wishes for. The study argues that the companies are giving higher pay, providing
employee perks and even extra, deploying automation tools to assist the computer programmers in
software development life cycle in order to increase job satisfaction in IT professionals (McMurtrey,
Grover, Teng, & Lightner, 2002). The purpose of the study is to identify what increases job
satisfaction in information technology workers in different level, and the study evaluates based on
two hypotheses. The study evaluates career orientation in job satisfaction and impact of
implementation of Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) in job satisfaction (McMurtrey,

Jack Carlisle was hired to restructure and organize IZL IT department in a growing financial
services organization that is engulfed with internal turmoil which saw a sudden replacement of the
company's CEO Chuck Hansen. Jack Carlisle as a straight shooter must assess the changes, both

The leadership within IZL Corporation has become complacent and not ready to tackle challenges
inherent in managing large public companies as well as dealing with developed financial institutions
and regulators. This is evident when Jack Carlisle asked the question "How do you know how things
are going?" and the response was "If I don't get a call, everything must be fine." (Austin, 2007). The
company lacked a reporting mechanism that will otherwise provide important information about the
affairs and health of the business and IT infrastructure.
Business process remained manual as reporting was done in spreadsheet rather than utilizing
application designed and developed to produce efficiency and alignment with business strategy.
There seem to be no care for data protection as there were no policies, procedures and regulatory
system to guide workflow and ensure compliance. The handling of physical infrastructure did not
matter to either executive managers of the IT staffs especially when you come to think of the
investment and cost associated with maintaining an IT shop.

Preface
The Impact of Information Technology on the Workforce of the Future
To determine the impact of information technology on the workforce of the future, I conducted a
study using an historical perspective on the use of information technology in the workplace and by
the workforce.
This study also considered recent trends in workforce management such as telecommuting,
globalization, outsourcing, and off–shoring activities. The results of this study revealed that
technological advances in office equipment over the past thirty years have enabled organizations to
improve operating efficiencies, improve communications, reduce costs, increase their global
presence, and gain competitive advantage through the implementation of information ... Show more

Computers loaded with word processing, spreadsheet analysis and presentation software programs
have become standard fixtures on each employee's desk. Some of the workforce became mobile,
conducting business outside of the traditional office settings through the use of Personal Digital
Assistants (PDAs), cellular phones and laptop computers. The initial users of mobile technology
were salespeople and executive management; however, easier access to the Internet allowed more
employees to become "telecommuters," who conducted work–related activities either from their
homes or from some other remote location.
Technological advances in electronic communication may continue to decrease the need for
traditional office setting while increasing the number of telecommuters. Electronic capabilities will
also continue to affect outsourcing, off–shoring and globalization efforts by many organizations.
Collaboration technologies, currently being enhanced by Microsoft and IBM, may enable companies
to conduct "virtual meetings" in the near future. In a virtual meeting, employees from remote
locations conduct real–time meetings from their own computers using peer–to–peer software.
Participants can see one another on computer screens, share computer space and make changes to
product designs or contract documents via a "virtual whiteboard."

Introduction
Information Technology Management (ITPM involves leading the implementation of an IT
infrastructure upgrade, migration, or installation. According to their corporate website tdsinc.com,
Telephone & Data Systems, Inc. is the parent company to U.S. Cellular, TDS Telecom (an internet
service provider), and OneNeck IT Solutions (a hosted IT consulting company). IT Project
Managers within this company and others use both common communication methods, as well as
many unique to their profession and colleagues. The purpose of this report is to examine Telephone
& Data Systems Inc. (TDS) and ITPM through an analysis of internal vs. external communication,
in–person vs. "other" (electronic) forms of communication, and the use of official lines of
communication vs. unofficial lines of communication.
Internal vs. External Communication
Internal communication between colleagues at TDS, which takes place through various in–person
and "other" forms of communication, has a heavy reliance on technical diction. Flexibility and
knowledge of the technical language within the field can help in adapting to the work environment.
Even if not familiar with all of the technologies, knowing the technical language can help in putting
the puzzle together.
Collaborative learning among peers is another key aspect of the internal workplace communication
environment. Although many are intimidating as technical professionals, sending a quick message to

Uses of New and Emerging Technologies in Marketing Software
Introduction
Few technologies have had the disruptive impact of the smartphone across all industries, and
especially in the area of enterprise software sales and service. The company Salesforce.com, has
created comprehensive online product demonstrations that illustrate how effective the Apple iPhone
and its larger counterpart, the iPad are in simplifying the complex aspects of Customer Relationship
Management (CRM), Sales Force Automation (SFA) and Partner Relationship Management (PRM)
(Limbasan, Rusu, 2011). The Salesforce.com CRM suite of applications are all delivered on the
Software–as–a–Service (SaaS) platform, which has significant economic advantages for customers
as they only pay for the software they have used (Katzan, Dowling, 2010). SaaS–based CRM
development techniques Salesforce.com uses makes their applications easily used across thousands
of users in enterprises who only need their smartphones to access, update and sell to customers
using the software. Apple estimates that the iPhone is now the most commonly used smartphone in
enterprises globally today, with approximately 68% market share as of fiscal year 2011 (Apple
Investor Relations, 2012). The intent of this analysis is to evaluate how smartphones are leading to
exponential growth of SaaS–based CRM applications including Salesforce.com and others (Katzan,

As the Texas sun began to set, Janet Wejman, the Chief Information Officer for Continental Airlines

It was now November 1996 and while she had only been with the company for a few months, she

The change in management had direct implications for the outsourcing relationship. Dennis Stolkey,
a Division Vice President with EDS' Travel and Transportation Group (and the former account

had evolved through several stages. He recalled:
Continental was the Travel and Transportation Group's largest customer and we treasured our
partnership with them. I believe the relationship grew stronger after the initial signing, but especially
during the 1993 and 1994 (CALite) years where strategic relationships were developed with
Continental senior management. With the emergence of an entirely new and successful management
team in 1995, we found ourselves trying to build new relationships and prove EDS again under the
new circumstances.
Bill Miller, Senior Director – Telecommunications & Technology, who joined Continental in 1984
during its first bout with bankruptcy noted:
One of the most challenging aspects of this agreement was perpetuating the intentions, underlying
assumptions, and strategic objectives of the original contract. In the five years after it was signed,
only one person from Continental who sat at the negotiating table remained with the airline and only
two senior managers who lived through the outsourcing process were still here. With each

It seems like every week we hear about thousands and thousands of people losing their jobs. Back in
the 1980s most of the job losses were in the blue–collar sector. In the 1990s it seems many of the
cuts were made in the white–collar, management jobs. Why? Think about it. Technology, to a large
extent, has driven organizations to change the way they operate and that includes the way they
manage. We're going to take an in–depth look at how organizations work and how they've been
transformed by technology on the world stage.
Information systems are the foundation for conducting business today. In many industries, survival
and even existence is difficult without extensive use of information technology. No longer can we
imagine going to work and conducting business without them. As a society we have come to rely
extensively on the use of information appliances such as cell phones, BlackBerrys, handhelds, and

the use of e–mail, online conferencing, and international teleconferencing over the Internet have all

Women in Information Technology:
The Secret Code
In the past century, women have fought for such basics as the right to vote, own land, and establish
credit. In recent decades, women have struggled for a seat at the tables of power and fame– from the
tennis courts to corporate boardrooms to the halls of Congress to the space shuttle. Today, the
women's movement is in a new, complex phase. Women have slowly ascended to leadership roles in
all sectors of the economy; however, each woman who makes it to the top of her field is usually
alone once she gets there. Many of the issues for these women are the same, from questions of male
domination to secret dialogue, to discrimination to pay inequalities. Because the fields and agendas

IT Leaders
IT managers need a broad range of skills. They not only need the technical skills, but should also
have strong business skills, experience with specific software or technology, as well as a background
in consulting or business management. IT managers must possess strong interpersonal,
communication, and leadership skills because they are required to interact not only with their staff,
but also with other people inside and outside their organization. They also must possess team skills
to work on group projects and other collaborative efforts. Computer and information systems
managers increasingly interact with persons outside their organization, reflecting their emerging role
as vital parts of their firm's executive team (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2004–05).
Male Dominated Industry
During the 1970s and 1980s, males were more likely to have highly specialized training and were
consequently valued more highly than females (Colwill & Townsend, 1999). IT professional males
were once seen as possessing highly technical skills and knowledge that the rest of the organization
could not access. Control and power over resources was in the hands of these professional males. An
air of mystery

Carr 's perception is that IT is a commodity, thus making it non–strategic by my definition. A
historical view puts Carr 's premise into perspective. From the beginning and into the mid–to–late
1990 's IT uniqueness was pervasive because most systems were either custom or significantly
modified application packages. The era of competitive advantage systems arose with firms such as
Merrill Lynch, American Airlines and American Hospital Supply. They broke away from the back–
office notion of data processing and moved into the forefront with customer–centric applications,
which were deemed to be strategic at the time. The deployment of proprietary, semi– and totally
custom applications was the rule. For historical purposes, most IT observers would concede that the
majority of packaged application systems installed throughout this timeframe were modified
significantly. Modification was required because the packaged application software was relatively
thin on features and thinner yet in its ability to adapt for industries and unique business processes.
The latest versions of packaged applications are much improved and hence "tweaked" significantly
less. They are often used right out of the box because they can be tuned via templates or industry
specific versions. In accordance with Carr 's premise,

The Business Value of IT
Introduction
As we have learned throughout this course, the value of information technology has been one of the
most influential aspects of conducting business. Information technology is used on a daily basis at
all organizations, and it has grown exponentially throughout the course of history. Organizations
purchase and implement information technology to gain a competitive edge over their competitors.
This dates all the way back to the invention of the steam engine, in the mid–1800s, which allowed
finished products to be mass transported by the railroad system. The companies and corporations
that used the rail system gained a competitive advantage over smaller companies that used other
modes for transporting their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The major elements are cost efficiency, eliminating wastes, and researching future IT investments.
In the IT Doesn't Matter article, three main points were outlined, and they were spend less, follow,
don't lead, and focus on vulnerabilities, not opportunities. Overspending has always been a major
issue in regards to applying new technology, and it is important to execute an IT budget for any
organization. Office Depot adopted new technology to improve all of their operations, especially in
the supply chain. They were able to increase efficiency, while modernizing their budget. Information
technology can benefit any organization if they are researched thoroughly and will improve the
business needs of the organization. If it will not improve the business needs, there is no need to
invest in expensive technology. The most important phase in the system development life cycle is
the systems analysis phase. The goal of this phase is to identify what problems need to be fixed and
breaking down how the system will benefit all users. Therefore, the business needs need to be
identified and outlined before new technology is adopted into an organization's business model.
Once new technology is applied, organizations must continue to research information technology. If

According to Steurbaut, et al. (2013) query limiting is a technique used by developers to filter
searches within a database by establishing program parameters for searches that are designed to
optimize returned results. One way a search within a database may establish parameters is by
limiting the sources from which information is drawn during queries (Steurbaut, et al., 2013). Query
results will then be optimized because the information is drawn from the most relevant sources. The
COSARA imposes such limits on query results. The information to produce the image of infection is
drawn from the "Microbiology from the laboratory, DICOM images from the hospitals PACS server,
Clinical data from the CIS, and Meta data provided at time of antibiotic prescription" (Steurbaut, et
al., 2013).
Data visualization empowering Prevention and control: COSARA example A great benefit of data
visualization technology like COSARA within the healthcare industry is that the computer generated
image empowers physicians to see how an infection might be affecting the patient. Physicians can
determine the contagion level and establish controls (Steurbaut, et al., 2013). It is not only
information about the patient that the infectious image delivers, but how the disease may be
spreading, the speed of the spread, and any concentrated areas of infection within the body. This
kind of knowledge greatly informs the approach within ICU to treatment, depth and breadth of
knowledge about

While working as a research intern with Tata Institute of Social Sciences in a village in India, I
undertook a study on the application of technology to bring about positive changes in the life of
rural population. We worked to understand the problems which the villagers faced and then
suggested solutions which leveraged the information technology. As a part of this study, I was

the impact of our suggestions within the scope of such a small–scale project. This was my first
experience as a consultant and it infused in me a desire to be one. It has since got me excited to

The principle idea of this research study was to explore the reasons behind low user adoption of
Health Information Exchange. These reasons include technology, financial, and resource limitations
which can be driven by the size of the organizations and their regional location. Also coming into
play as a strong barrier can be the unwanted but necessary partnerships that many clinical
institutions must enter into to provide the most well–rounded and full picture of data to exchange.

organizations to proactively control costs and to continue to improve the quality of care for patients.
Many healthcare organizations have been working towards tackling and complying with this issue

As employees get older, job performance across various professional and non–professional positions
has been proven to hold steady (Judge and Judge, 2007, pg. 49 – 50). Despite evidence to the
contrary, stereotypes and biased beliefs continue to permeate the information technology sector. This
is partially due to the nature of the industry itself. Information technology companies are geared
towards developing innovative technical products and services for businesses and consumers.
Technology rapidly evolves and adapts to address society's needs. For instance, the telephone gave
way to the facsimile machine. This soon became virtually obsolete with the introduction of newer
technologies such as email and instant messaging (Charness, 2006). Companies within the IT sector
seek to maintain a workforce that reflects the youth and vigor of their technology. Sylvia Francis, a
researcher of age discrimination, notes, "These industries are looking to match staff with their
perceived young image, and once you hit 40 you no longer fit" (Computer Weekly, 2006). Older
workers also tend to shun job postings or interviews referring to "young, dynamic" organizations or
projects, as these descriptors infer an environment that prefers youth rather than experience
(Goodwin, 2006). A 2001 survey illustrates the disparity in both staffing and average salaries for IT
professionals. This survey consisted of 3,629 total respondents, of which 40

In these organizations, managers rely on instant information to deliver mass–customized products
and services uniquely suited to the targeted markets. The decentralized structure allows the
managers to persuade informal commitments and networks to establish goals. In these kinds of
organizations, managers appeal to the knowledge, learning, and decision making of individual
employees to ensure proper operation of the firm. Once again, Information technology can perform
these activities in the best manner. High usage of Internet since the mid–1990s caused significant
organizational redesign and has contributed the emergence of new phenomenon – Digital Firm. This
is the fourth factor of environmental change which forced companies to introduce new information
technology, and can be described as the firm where the most processes are enabled digitally, as well
as relationship with customers, employees and suppliers. This is flattened organization where, any

INTRODUCTION
1.0 BACKGROUND OF STUDY Globalization of the economy has led to the emergence of
information technology, especially the growth of the Internet and other communication network.
Growing diversity of business transactions and increased competition, companies are changing the
way they communicate with new processes that sharpen business performance. The Internet is
becoming the foundation for new business models, process and new ways of knowledge distribution

IT has helped firms improve their internal operations (Amudo and Inanga, 2009), thereby reducing
internal costs and accelerating product development. Lower internal costs make profits possible
even at lower selling prices. The sooner a product is on the market, the sooner it can generate
profits. Quicker time to market is especially important for technology products in which prices drop
rapidly as soon as many similar products become available. IT also supports sales and marketing
processes in many ways. It provides salespeople better information about prospective customers; it
helps salespeople identify and demonstrate the right product choices; it helps companies calculate
individual prices based on the needs and resources of specific customers. IT applications also make
the actual purchase transactions simpler and faster. The role of IT does not end once the customer

Melody He 08/09/2011 CASE ANALYSIS QUESTIONS

rapidly. How do you know the strategy you describe is the one Razorfish is pursuing (site evidence
from the case AND describe the core competencies that Razorfish employs to support the overall
strategy)? (400 word limit)
The overarching strategy that Razorfish used is acquisitions. Based on the book "In 1996, Omnicom

4. Imagine you are working on the top management team of Razorfish and Jeff Dachis (CEO) tells
you that he is committed to keeping Razorfish open as an independent operation (no acquisition)
and he wants you to come up with a five year strategic plan. Provide your plan below. Why do you
