The history of toilets began over 2800 years ago when King Minos of Crete had the first recorded flushing water closet. During Roman times, sewer systems with running water were developed. In 1596, Sir John Harington invented the first modern flush toilet, installing it in Queen Elizabeth I's palace. The first patent for a flushing toilet was issued in 1775 to Scottish inventor Alexander Cummings. Throughout the 1800s and 1900s, improvements were made such as indoor plumbing, elevated tanks, and the modern close tank and bowl design. Today, various technologies exist such as gravity fed, water saving, pressure assisted, and vacuum toilets.
