Character Analysis Of All Quiet On The Western Front
All Quiet on the Western Front is a 1929 novel written by Erich Remarque. All Quiet on the Western
Front mainly focusses on a few main characters: Paul Bäumer is a German soldier fighting down in
the trenches during World War I. He is also the main character and narrator of the novel. Stanislaus
Katczinsky is Paul s best friend in the army and is known as Kat . The novel begins with Paul and his
friends going to war. After only two weeks of fighting, there are only 80 out of the 150 men still alive.
As the main character and the narrator, Paul is the centre figure in the novel. Through the novel, his
personality is different to how he normally would be because of the way the war forces him to behave.
Before the war, Paul was a very different person to how he is during the war. Before the war, Paul was
a caring and sensitive man. He loved his family and would also write poetry. But now, like many of
the other soldiers, he quickly learns to turn off his mind and to hide his feelings. He keeps his
emotions hidden to keep his sanity and to survive. He is no longer able to mourn the dead.
Paul joined the war as a young man of only nineteen years old after some intensive urging from the
schoolmaster Kantorek. Paul and many of his friends from school signed up to the army voluntarily
after they listened to the inspiring speeches that was made by their teacher, Kantorek. Kantorek was a
fiercely patriotic man and he convinced many of Paul s friends to enlist to prove their

Essay On Thomas Jefferson A Hypocrite
Is Thomas Jefferson a Hypocrite or Not? After writing the Declaration of Independence, and saying
All men are created equal, Jefferson continued to own slaves of his own. Before, and after writing the
Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson said many cruel and offensive things to describe a
runaway slave. He is greatly addicted to drink, and when drunk is insolent and disorderly. (Slavery, 1)
Following his rude and offensive descriptions, he offered a reward for the one to find the missing
slave. Jefferson is seen to be a big hypocrite to many and in many ways, by the choices he did not take
when he should have. When Jefferson was making the poster that was offering a reward for the
runaway slave, he should have thought it through, and put himself in the slaves spot, before trying to
say malicious and irrelevant things about them. Would Jefferson have wanted to be treated like those
slaves were? Would Jefferson have ran away, if he was that slave? Many thought that Jefferson did not
try to stop slavery, because he might have had sexual intercourse with some of his slaves. Would that
stop you from stopping slavery? But that is not the most valid reason Thomas Jefferson is seen to be a
hypocrite. The most valid reason Jefferson was known as a big hypocrite, is because he wrote the

Some people think that Jefferson buying the Louisiana territory was a good thing, and a big help to the
nation, even though it was unconstitutional. A lot of people had the thought that Jefferson kept his
mouth shut about slavery because he did not want a bunch of chaos happening at the wrong time and
the wrong place. Jefferson clearly explains why he kept his mouth shut about slavery, and his fear of
certain things. I fear the terms in which I speak of slavery and of our constitution may produce an
irritation which will revolt the minds of our countrymen... and thus do more harm than good. (Slavery,

Heart Of Darkness By Joseph Conrad
In Joseph Conrad s, Heart of Darkness one encounters the telling of Conrad s adventures on a
steamship traveling up the Congo when numerous, drastic accountancies take place. During this
Victorian age, men are seen as heroes and women are occupied by roles of domesticity, which
ironically the story tells quite the opposite from these two ideals. Throughout the text, one will also
learn from the imperialistic society that is set forth by the Europeans and the controversy that arises
because of the social system within the home and civilization. This story is set up by a narrator, by the
name of Marlow, who re telling the experiences that Conrad had and how various obstacles were
overcome with he and his intended or fiancé. In Heart of Darkness, the main themes that are discussed
and brought to light throughout the entire story are that of the hypocrisy behind the idea of
Imperialism, the madness that surrounds the absurdity of evil, and the idea of the last encounter that
Marlow has with Kurtz s intended and the irony that surrounds the circumstance. First, the issue at
hand with Imperialism and the insincerity that surrounds it is baffling, as Marlow is traveling in and
out of the many stations that neighbor the river he is on. Marlow is in awe, as he has to encounter and
be a bystander of much torture, cruelty and a sense of slavery that these station workers possess and
fight for on a daily basis, highly focusing on the Inner and Outer Station or Central Station. As

Ductus Deferens Research Paper
Ductus deferens
The ductus deferens (otherwise known as the vas deferens) is a structure found in the male
reproductive system. There are two ductus deferens and they are identical in their structure and
function. The primary function of the ductus deferens is to store and transport sperm to the ejaculatory
duct, connecting the epididymis, merging into the urethra pushing it forward and allowing the sperm
to exit the body. The ductus deferens are designed for this function, characterised by thick muscular
walls, which perform peristalsis. The inside wall consists of a moist folded layer of mucous
membrane, which is further surrounded by three layers of circular and longitudinal muscle fibres. At
the end of the ductus deferens are the ampulla, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The skin of the scrotum becomes wrinkled due to the underlying dartos muscle. The testes must be
kept at temperature that is lower than 3oC, so that spermatogenesis can occur. The scrotum uses a
muscle (the cremaster muscle) to achieve this. When the cremaster muscle shrinks, the testes move
closer to the scrotum, and this increases the temperature of them. They can also be cooled down by
dilating and moving away from the testes, dropping them in temperature. The testes receive their
blood flow from the anterior and posterior scrotal artery. The venous blood flows through the
testicular veins and then into the vena cava. Another function of the testes is to protect the testes from
injury, hence why one testis hangs lower than the other, to avoid compression in the event of impact.
Testes (Male gonads)
The testes are two ovular organs found in the male reproductive system. They are held in place by a
spermatic cord, which is a collection of vessels, nerves and ducts that run from more than one part of
the testes. The testes function to create the hormone testosterone; a primary male sex hormone which
generates the production of sperm. The seminiferous tubules which are located in the testes are
responsible for the production of sperm cells, and the sperm made in this process line the tubules until
they reach maturity and are released into the lumen of the seminiferous tubule.

Characteristics Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) was developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan in the 1980 s based on her
biosocial theory of borderline personality disorder (BPD; Linehan, 1993a, 1993b). DBT utilizes a
number of therapeutic techniques and skill development to target deficits in emotion regulation and
monitoring affective states. An important underlying assumption of DBT is that emotionally
vulnerable individuals learn maladaptive coping strategies (i.e., parasuicidal behaviours) as a way to
mitigate strong emotional reactions. Therefore, DBT attempts to develop more adaptive coping
strategies that encourage a person to build a life that they experience as worth living (Behavioral Tech,
2017).
The fundamental components of traditional DBT are based upon cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT),
acceptance, and dialectics (Linehan, 1993a). DBT implements traditional CBT techniques that
emphasize change, including skills training, exposure therapy, as well as cognitive and contingency
therapy (Linehan, 1993b; Rathus Miller, 2002). However, Linehan et al. (1991) recognized that when
clients were provided CBT alone, they often became distressed and dropped out of treatment. This
dilemma led Linehan to identify that when there was a balance between change and validation, clients
were far more likely to engage as well as remain in treatment (Linehan et al., 1991). Accordingly,
validation and acceptance became another principal component of DBT, with a focus of developing a
balance between

Oral History In Canada
The use of audio records for this project is significantly important as audio records allows people to
heard the voices of those who are not heard, in this specific case, it is the voices of immigrants that are
heard. Often, there is a general belief that people come to Canada for a better life, which is true.
However, people also assume that immigrants instantly have a better life in an economic and social
way, which is not true. This is why oral history is important in this situation. Oral history will allow
immigrants to share their personal experience with immigration and new life in Canada. This will
allow the providing of a new perspective on immigration and even contradict the general beliefs on
immigrations thanks to the use of oral history. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Effects of the Plague on Fourteenth Century Europe and...
The 14th century was an era of catastrophes. Some of them were man made, such as the Hundred
Years War. However, there were two natural disasters either of which would have been enough to
throw medieval Europe into real Dark Ages . The Black Death that followed on the heels of the Great
Famine caused millions of deaths, and together they subjected the population of medieval Europe to
tremendous struggles, leading many people to challenge old institutions and doubt traditional values.
These calamities altered the path of European development in many areas. In his essay called An

Caffa was probably not the only port the plague passed through en route to Europe, but it would
forever be the place said to be where the pestilence originated. As soon as the citizens realized what
horrible sickness had come from these ships, they expelled them from the port but it was too late.
Hundreds of the ships rats had scurried down the mooring ropes tied to the docks. The fleas
(Xenopsylla cheopis (oriental rat flea) that these infected vermin hosted were the real carriers of the
disease. As the infected rats died off, the fleas would seek any other warm blooded host; which
included man. There are no accounts of life in the besieged port, but there is enough information to
suggest what Caffa s final days may have looked like. John Kelly writes, As the death toll mounted,
the streets would have filled with feral animals feeding on human remains, drunken soldiers looting
and raping, old women dragging corpses through rubble, and burning buildings spewing jets of flame
and smoke into the Crimean sky. There would have been swarms of rodents with staggering gaits and
a strange bloody froth around their snouts, piles of bodies staked like cordwood in public squares, and
in every eye, a look of wild panic or dull resignation. The disease spread throughout Europe with
astonishing speed and fatal consequences. By January 1348, the plague was in Marseilles. It reached

The Chinese People s Liberation Army Essay
The Chinese People s Liberation Army: Ground Forces (PLAGF) began a massive military
modernization in the 1980 s and they have been continually reforming their training and education of
their ground forces ever since. Senior officials within the People s Liberation Army recognized that
improving the military skills and raising the education levels of both officers and troops alike were
necessary prerequisites if they wanted to be able to utilize more advanced weaponry and fight in this
day and age.
During the modernization of the People s Liberation Army funding was increased for military
education, the study of foreign militaries was incorporated into their training curriculum and contacts
with foreign military academies was increased. The leadership of the PLA focused their education
reforms on the military academy system. They also changed the scope of their training from being
highly politicized and emphasized in single unit infantry troop training, to concentrating on training
officers capable of directing combined arms warfare.
The Revival of the military academies system began in 1978, which the Cultural Revolution had
devastated. (Mao Zedong china s communist leader launched his plan to reassert his authority over the
Chinese government which is known as the cultural revolution.) By 1984 the military academy system
had over a hundred institutions that consisted of two kinds of schools: command schools and

It Was All Started With A Boy
...it was all started by a mouse (Smith 41). But it actually all started with a boy. On December 5th,
1901, in Chicago, Illinois. Father, Elias Disney, and mother, Flora Call Disney, had a son that they
named, Walter Elias Disney. He was one of five children, three boys; Herbert, Raymond, and Roy, and
one girl, Ruth. After the birth of Walt, the family moved to Marceline, Missouri where they had a
farm. Walt first got his inspirations of drawing through the environment around him. Being wrapped

create these small sketches of animals and nature that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After returning from his service in France, Walt pursued a career in commercial art instead of getting a
high school diploma, leading to his experiments in animation. He first worked for Pesman Rubin
Commercial Art Studio where he was designing letterhead and advertisements. After getting laid off,
he found another job at the Kansas City Film Ad Company, where he was educated about animation,
producing advertisements prior the movies would begin. He later departed the Film Ad Company in
May 1922 with confidence in starting Laugh O Gram Films, where he created Alice s Wonderland.
Later, making a series of these films, known, as the Alice Comedies. Walt s company last for one year
and a half and went bankrupt in July 1923. Unlike most people, Walt Disney didn t give up. Instead,
he left Kansas City and headed to Hollywood.
At this point, Walt was completely broke. All he had was a loan of $500 from his uncle and his faithful
brother, Roy, by his side. With faith, Walt and Roy started the Disney Brothers Studio. They were able
to attain a distributor of New York to release the Alice Comedies, which became a high success with
popularity. Soon after, it led to the growth in Disney s staff members along with a brand new studio. In

Recidivism In Juveniles Essay
Juveniles offenders demonstrate higher rates of substance abuse indifference to non offending
juveniles. Recidivism increases more often with substance abuse and mirrors a deeper involvement in
the juvenile justice system. The likelihood that a youthful offender will have extensive interaction
with the system is in part due to drugs and alcohol use. Substance abuse has also produced rebellious
behavior in juveniles. More serious offenses are linked with severe substance abuse and increase the
rates of offending. Moreover, the younger the child is at the beginning of substance use usually
reflects greater chances for severe and continuing offending. Potential prognostication includes

I believe that the geographic environment of where these juveniles live is also a factor when the
involvement of substance abuse is present when dealing with recidivism, meaning how easy it is to
access drugs and alcohol. The root of the problem starts either two places at home or within the
juvenile s peer relationships. There are currently 15 juvenile drug courts here in Michigan. There is a
specialized docket within the juvenile or family court system, which selects delinquency cases. In
some cases, status offenders are designated a certain Judge. Because the juveniles have problems with
drugs and/ or alcohol the youths are referred to this docket. The juvenile drug treatment court judge
maintains close oversight of each case through regular status hearings with the parties and their
guardians. There is a team of representatives from treatment, juvenile justice, social and mental health
services, school, vocational training programs, law enforcement, probation, the prosecution, and the
defense and this is all coordinated by the judge that oversees the whole thing. Over the course of a
year or more, the team meets frequently (often weekly), determining how best to address the substance

order to provide them with a number of agricultural products they could sell on the world markets.
The most notable include: sugar cane, coffee, bananas, yams, citrus fruits, vegetables and fish. As the
country developed, is when industrialization began to occur. This took place with tourism becoming
the most dominant industry. At the same time, there was a focus on bauxite, chemicals, paper, cement

The Impact Of Transformative And Social Constructive...
Nursing education is designed to offer students the opportunity to become practitioners who are able
to connect theories into practice in ways that result in quality patient care. Consequently, Nurse
Educators are faced with the challenge of preparing students for the role of the graduate nurse,
including not only the theoretical foundations of practice but the technical skills and performance
behaviors necessary for their role in caring for patients with complex needs (Klein, 2006). Moreover,
educators often apply a variety of learning theories that foster behavioral change, motivate and
empower the nurse to form appropriate partnership with patients to promote quality care. Partnership
in care shifts the focus to the patient as the expert and leader of his/her own health care while the
nurse acts as a facilitator of health care. The purpose of this paper is to critically analyze how the
application of transformative and social constructive learning theories impacts adult learning
outcomes; and the resultant role in guiding nurses and patients to forge an effective partnership in
care.
Transformative Learning Theory
Jack Mezirow is credited for developing transformative learning theory. This theory maintains that the
manner in which learners understand their sense and skills is vital in developing meaning that supports
learning (Instructionaldesign.org, 2014). According to Mezirow s theory, there are two types of
learning: communicative and instrumental learning. While

Impact of Technology on the Animation Industry Essay
Impact of Technology on the Animation Industry
In 1988, the live action and animation hybrid Who Framed Roger Rabbit introduced a whole new way
of making animation movies (Elkins, 2003). The three dimensional rendering and the interaction
between live actors, animated figures and environment was revolutionary at that time (Elkins, 2003).
Three years later, in 1991, Beauty and the Beast was an Oscar nominee for best picture, which showed
how popular this genre had become (Elkins, 2003). Since then, rapid technological changes have
improved the quality of animation movies. The use of computers sat a new standard for animating,
with the first computer animated feature released less than ten years ago (DreamWorks, 2004). This

It is not possible to rush art, as they argue, and the process goes through several stages before the
movie is finished. After the art department has added colour and visual looks on figures and surfaces,
three dimensional models are made on computers. This is done by either creating a sculpture which is
scanned or by direct modeling using computer software. Hinges are added to move the figures, and a
character like Woody in Monster Inc. has as much as a hundred hinges in his face. After the models
are made, they are dressed, to make a proper visualization. When making the shots, virtual cameras
are used to record different scenes. Without the aid of the new technology, it would be impossible to
achieve the same results.
After the decision has been made on which virtual camera shot to use, the figures are animated to
create the scene (Pixar, 2004a). At Pixar, they do not paint or draw the figures in the final stage, but
use the ones already made. By using the hinges, the figures are controlled like puppeteers, creating
movement and different emotions. This provides the movie makers with options they would not have
without the new technology. Then, shadows and lighting are added, before the information is put
together to a film in a computer system. This process adds motion blur to the animation. Each frame
of 1/24 seconds screen time takes at least six hours of processing,

The Effect of the Battle at Antietam Essay
The Effect of the Battle at Antietam The effects of the bloodiest battle in American military history

enormous impact on Britain s decision to not recognize the Confederacy as a nation. During a low

the fact that America practiced slavery. In a letter from Secretary of State William H. Seward to Henry
Adams 18 August 1862, Seward wrote, I cannot avoid thinking that the ideas of intervention and
mediation have their source in an imperfect conception in Europe of the independence of the
American Nation (Papers Relating to Foreign Affairs). It is important to remember that both Britain
and France were anti slavery at the time. Slavery was viewed as one of America s most noticeable
imperfections. Secondly, the cotton famine was severely affecting the British. When the Union
captured New Orleans, cotton flow to Britain was still not returned as promised by Seward.
Throughout the summer, pressure built for Britain and France to mediate a settlement, which would
mean Confederate independence. The Paris Constitutionnel reported in June 1862 that only British
intervention would end this bloody war (McPherson 57). In a letter from Henry Adams to Seward in
August 1862, Adams thought the cotton famine was shifting support towards the Confederacy in
Britain. Also, the government was not strong enough in Britain to force

Animation Stimuli For The Study Of Instructor Gestures
System for creating animation stimuli for the study of instructor gestures in education. The system
does not require artistic talent or programming expertise. The system provides an animation character
that serves as an instructor avatar .The avatar can speak ,write on a nearby white board ,and make
pointing ,embodied cognition and charisma gestures .The avatar is controlled with a text script that
specify when and what the avatar says and does. Introduction : Animation plays an important role in
education. Animation such as pointing; circling; or underlining can help capture; maintain ,and direct
the student s attention during lecture . Instructor animation serve as a complementary communication
channel that helps student parse and grasp the information presented to them verbally and visually. For
example : in the context of learning mathematical equivalence ,a balance gestures elicits the students
firsthand experience with the concept of physical equilibrium, which is used to scaffold the novel
concepts of balancing the sides of equation . Animation can help convey an instructor s appealing and
engaging personality which enhances the learning .Important as animation seems to be ,much remains
to be discovered through education research regarding what ,when and how instructor animation
benefit learning. . Traditional education research on instructor animation relies on video stimuli.

Over the past decade there has been an enormous increase in high efficient techniques for studying the
cell on a molecular level [1]. These techniques are responsible for a better understanding of the human
body and the invention of a plethora of clinical treatments, ranging from cancer drugs to vaccinations
[2].
Due to the increased knowledge of the human body, there should be asked what the ethical concerns

3.1 Modifying our children s children
To exemplify this ethical aspects of CRISPR Cas, we will view the application as a means of knocking
out pathogenic genes in a fetus which might carries a heritable disease.
To knock out the pathogenic gene in a therapeutic way all cells must be affected, for this the right
dosage of the nuclease (Cas9) must be administered. The delicate part is determining the right dosage;
if the dosage is too low not all cells will be affected and the pathogenic gene may still be functional.
On the other hand, if the dosage is too high the nuclease may cut unspecific and knock out required
genes, which can even result in losing the life of the patient [3].
For this reason scientists tend to focus on modifying human embryos instead of somatic cells (after
birth). In doing so the number of cells can be determined beforehand and the dose can easier be
optimized. The method will be applied during in vitro fertilization, more specifically in the post
fertilization period of the zygote, just before implantation in the mother. After the treatment with
nuclease, the cells can be screened for the presence of the pathogen gene [8]. As a result the child will
live free of the disease. Although this sounds very promising, the use of genetically modifying
therapeutics on embryos awakens many ethical concerns.

Anti Federalist Paper Pros And Cons
The Federalist and Anti Federalist papers were created in response to the United States Constitution.
In 1787, the Second Continental Congress called for a federal convention. This meeting in
Philadelphia came to create the U.S Constitution. It originally was held to revise the Articles of
Confederation, but due to the mindsets of many proponents present at the convention, like Alexander
Hamilton and James Madison, and the vision of creating a new government rather than fixing the old
one, the United States Constitution was formed. Once this was sent to congress it was submitted to the
states for ratification. In response, many articles and letters were submitted to the public criticizing the
proposition. These articles and letters are where the Anti Federalist papers are derived from. Although
there was opposition to the Constitution, many were in its favor. In response to these criticizing
papers, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison wrote papers in the constitutions defense.
These were come to be known as the Federalist papers. Two papers in particular, Federalist 51 and
Anti Federalist 51, are written on the topic of checks and balances and how this relates to a separation
of powers within the national government. These arguments were successful due to their primary
points of contention and strong arguments proposed.
The primary point of contention in Federalist 51, written by James Madison, was to support the checks
and balances system in the United States

Fda Approval Process Of Drugs Essay

of Drugs When I was a kid, I always wondered why it took so long for an ill person to become well
again. I always thought that if the ill person went to the doctor they would be back to normal the next
day, but that s not the case. For some people it took several days, weeks, months, and even years to
conquer an illness but as a child I never could understand that. I don t know how many times I ve
asked my mom or dad how come the doctors don t get together and make a miracle drug that could
heal anything and everything. It wasn t until the age of 15 when my grandmother was diagnosed with
breast cancer that I understood why it took so long for others to heal and the process that they had to
endure in order to be healthy again. Shortly after my grandmother s diagnosis, I started looking into
what it would take to get a drug that would cure cancer through the approval process on the shelf to
save some many others just like my grandmother. But I kept running into a dead end. Everything
seemed to keep pointing towards chemotherapy and radiation. Although I wanted something to heal
my grandmother fast, chemotherapy and radiation was the only solution if I had wish to see her watch
me graduate high school. I went to almost every appointment with her to watch how it helped
strengthen but also watch as it drained her energy. A month of chemotherapy and a few weeks of
radiation and my

Female Pattern Baldness
Being a young women suffering from hair loss is one of the worst thing in life. A woman s hair is the
essence of her beauty, and the affects of hair loss are a crippling blow to a women s confidence.
However statistics show that only 27% of women deal with hair loss before the age of 50, that being
said most women under the age of 50 will never have to go through the emotional trauma of hair loss.
Unfortunately for me, I was had to deal with hair loss under the age of 50. It was very humiliating
experience but some how I found a way to over come this.
Through my diligent research on the subject, now I have a head of beautiful and long hair once again.
I found that the best way to fight hair loss as women is to first know the reasons for why it happened
and how to deal with it. The reason for this is because we are all unique in every way and to just
research on one way it can happen is not smart and it can be counter productive.
The misconception many women have when it comes to dealing with hair loss is that it has to be
hereditary but this is very far from the truth. The truth is female pattern baldness has been linked to

linked causes of hair loss within women. Another hormone is Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is
considered a male hormone but women also have a small amount that runs through their blood, some

to lose hair just like men do. The best way to combat this problem is to start doing more aerobic
exercises. Doing aerobics is a natural and healthy way for lowering DHT production. Another way is
trying a legitimate hair loss treatment but this can a very expensive proposition because I can

Isopropyl Alcohol can kill 99.99% of all non spore forming bacteria types in under 30 seconds. In a
large clinical study in 2004 a test showed that placing hand sanitizer dispensers in an office resulted in
a 21% reduction in absences. In schools the test showed 51% less of absences, and 43% in college
dormitories. The standard for hand sanitisers used in clinics and hospitals is a alcohol concentration of
at least 70% but in U.S. stores hand sanitisers that have as low as 40% concentrations are available. In
the food industry workers are not allowed to use only alcohol antiseptics. Certain spore forming
bacteria, especially the endospores of gram positive bacteria are usually resistant to hand sanitizers as
well as soap and water but are visible in spore formation. Gram positive bacteria is impenetrable to
sanitizers because of its thick and well built plasma membrane which is thicker than most viruses and
fungus cell s membranes. This attribute gives great difficulty to alcohol antiseptics and is hard to
destroy the proteins inside the cell because of the thick wall. Most alcohol based sanitizers are
effective against most viruses and funguses better than simply hand washing with soap. Never the less
it is good to wash your hands frequently and not rely solely on alcohol based hand sanitiser. By
washing your hands with soap and warm water you are able to get rid of most of the bigger more
visible funguses and

Swot Analysis Of Risksense Inc. Essay
Introduction
Cybersecurity is defined as the state of being protected against the criminal or unauthorized use of
electronic data, or measures taken to achieve this. (Oxford Dictionaries) I researched, and found a lot
of new cybersecurity technology, but in this paper, I narrowed it down to four. All of these
technologies seem like they will have a huge impact on the cybersecurity field as a whole.
Cybersecurity is important because we would not have much of anything in cyberspace if nothing was
secure.

The Common Life Scott Russell Sanders Analysis
Humans in society are like musicians in an orchestra. Solo, their parts sound odd and out of place,
lacking the harmonies mindfully composed for the rest of the orchestra. Humans are interdependent,
social creatures by nature. We rely on each other to survive. We rely on each other to do jobs that
might require a certain skill set or jobs that we might not have time to do ourselves. We even rely on
each other to bring a sense of familiarity and security to our communities just by knowing one
another. If we all remained anonymous, then we could not rely on each other to satisfy these vital
societal needs. Scott Russell Sanders, in his essay The Common Life , states that the more people in a
community who prefer to live isolated and reclusive lives, the more susceptible the community is to a
division that impedes its ability to live together, interact synergistically, and thrive. He correctly
believes that this division can lead to a total breakdown in society. Sanders hypothetical breakdown of
society is hinged upon a scenario where few contribute to the society from which they isolate
themselves. If there is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everyone has to be socially interactive to stop crime and an imminent breakdown of society?
Conversely, some might believe that many conflicts derive from close connectivity and that most
crime is not random, but rather is committed against a known friend, relative, or foe. Therefore,
isolation would prevent these negative relationships from forming and thus reduce crime. While these
crimes do exist, encouraging people to be antisocial and not form these relationships is impractical
and improbable. Even if one stays as isolated as possible, they will still have to interact somehow
without the outside world. If people want to do drugs, they will find a way to acquire them, even if
that means they have to socialize. Isolation is a result of people not wanting to socialize. If people

The Movie The Shawshank Redemption
This paper examines the relationship between the major motion picture, The Shawshank Redemption s
(Darabont, 1994), main character, Andy Dufresne, and the first two andragogy assumptions of
Malcolm S. Knowles (1980). Knowles assumptions are affirmed but also rebutted from other scholars
throughout the document as Andy s actions are described and connected to the plot of the movie.
Adult Learning in the Shawshank Redemption Malcolm Knowles professed the importance of an adult
s life experiences and the close connection to the learning process (Knowles, 1980). Life experience
adds an additional layer of resources the adult learner may draw upon when presented with new
learning opportunities. When life experiences are integrated into a self directed learner, substantial
learning can occur. Andy Dufresne, the main character in the motion picture, The Shawshank
Redemption (Darabont, 1994), experienced an evolution of adult learning as he was imprisoned for a
crime he did not commit. During his nineteen years in the Shawshank Prison, Andy, an exceptionally
intelligent banker, continued to possess an independent self concept as he adapted and transformed his
learning, self directing his own escape.
Knowles Assumptions and Rebuttals
One of the six assumptions from Malcolm Knowles theory on adult learning stated the following, 1.
As a person matures, his or her self concept moves from that of a dependent personality toward one of
a self directing human being (Merriam,

A Study On Low Back Pain Patients With Associated Leg Pain...
Abstract
Background: Low back pain patients with associated leg pain symptoms generally have a poorer
prognostic outcome compared to those with localised low back pain. Therefore, this study will
investigate the difference in clinical outcomes associated with low back pain patients with and without
self reported leg pain symptoms. This study will also address if additional co factors such as age, sex,
and occupation have an effect on the severity of these clinical outcomes. The clinical outcomes which
will be considered are pain rating, interference with active daily living (ADL) rating, anxiety rating,
depression rating and control of pain rating.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study compares adult low back pain patients with localised pain (n
= 58) to low back pain patients with self reported leg pain symptoms (n = 54) who presented for
chiropractic treatment. Patients completed the WIOC patient outcomes questionnaire as baseline
which consisted of the Bournemouth Questionnaire, recording responses from an 11 point numerical
scale (NRS). Demographic information was also collected. Differences between the two groups using
the data collected from this questionnaire were calculated using the Mann Whitney U test. Differences
between age and sex were also calculated using the test used.

Common Views of Weight
Crawford and Campbell (1999) found that common definitions of weight differ drastically from
medically accepted BMI values. In this study, 1342 participants (666 men and 676 women) completed
surveys in which they defined ideal weight and the term overweight. The average BMI value that
women considered ideal was 22.7 and the average ideal BMI value for men was 24.9. Medically, a
BMI value of 25 is considered overweight. In the study, however, women defined an average BMI
value of 23.7 as overweight and men defined an average BMI value of 26.1 as overweight. The BMI
values for ideal weight and overweight increased in both sexes with the participants ages and current
weights.
In summary, men and women often do not have realistic images of their ideal weight and/or being
overweight. This fact can create a problem when men and women strive for unrealistic weight goals.

  • 2. Character Analysis Of All Quiet On The Western Front All Quiet on the Western Front is a 1929 novel written by Erich Remarque. All Quiet on the Western Front mainly focusses on a few main characters: Paul Bäumer is a German soldier fighting down in the trenches during World War I. He is also the main character and narrator of the novel. Stanislaus Katczinsky is Paul s best friend in the army and is known as Kat . The novel begins with Paul and his friends going to war. After only two weeks of fighting, there are only 80 out of the 150 men still alive. As the main character and the narrator, Paul is the centre figure in the novel. Through the novel, his personality is different to how he normally would be because of the way the war forces him to behave. Before the war, Paul was a very different person to how he is during the war. Before the war, Paul was a caring and sensitive man. He loved his family and would also write poetry. But now, like many of the other soldiers, he quickly learns to turn off his mind and to hide his feelings. He keeps his emotions hidden to keep his sanity and to survive. He is no longer able to mourn the dead. Paul joined the war as a young man of only nineteen years old after some intensive urging from the schoolmaster Kantorek. Paul and many of his friends from school signed up to the army voluntarily after they listened to the inspiring speeches that was made by their teacher, Kantorek. Kantorek was a fiercely patriotic man and he convinced many of Paul s friends to enlist to prove their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay On Thomas Jefferson A Hypocrite Is Thomas Jefferson a Hypocrite or Not? After writing the Declaration of Independence, and saying All men are created equal, Jefferson continued to own slaves of his own. Before, and after writing the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson said many cruel and offensive things to describe a runaway slave. He is greatly addicted to drink, and when drunk is insolent and disorderly. (Slavery, 1) Following his rude and offensive descriptions, he offered a reward for the one to find the missing slave. Jefferson is seen to be a big hypocrite to many and in many ways, by the choices he did not take when he should have. When Jefferson was making the poster that was offering a reward for the runaway slave, he should have thought it through, and put himself in the slaves spot, before trying to say malicious and irrelevant things about them. Would Jefferson have wanted to be treated like those slaves were? Would Jefferson have ran away, if he was that slave? Many thought that Jefferson did not try to stop slavery, because he might have had sexual intercourse with some of his slaves. Would that stop you from stopping slavery? But that is not the most valid reason Thomas Jefferson is seen to be a hypocrite. The most valid reason Jefferson was known as a big hypocrite, is because he wrote the Declaration of ... A lot of people had the thought that Jefferson kept his mouth shut about slavery because he did not want a bunch of chaos happening at the wrong time and the wrong place. Jefferson clearly explains why he kept his mouth shut about slavery, and his fear of certain things. I fear the terms in which I speak of slavery and of our constitution may produce an irritation which will revolt the minds of our countrymen... and thus do more harm than good. (Slavery, ... • 5. Heart Of Darkness By Joseph Conrad In Joseph Conrad s, Heart of Darkness one encounters the telling of Conrad s adventures on a steamship traveling up the Congo when numerous, drastic accountancies take place. During this Victorian age, men are seen as heroes and women are occupied by roles of domesticity, which ironically the story tells quite the opposite from these two ideals. Throughout the text, one will also learn from the imperialistic society that is set forth by the Europeans and the controversy that arises because of the social system within the home and civilization. This story is set up by a narrator, by the name of Marlow, who re telling the experiences that Conrad had and how various obstacles were overcome with he and his intended or fiancé. In Heart of Darkness, the main themes that are discussed and brought to light throughout the entire story are that of the hypocrisy behind the idea of Imperialism, the madness that surrounds the absurdity of evil, and the idea of the last encounter that Marlow has with Kurtz s intended and the irony that surrounds the circumstance. First, the issue at hand with Imperialism and the insincerity that surrounds it is baffling, as Marlow is traveling in and out of the many stations that neighbor the river he is on. Marlow is in awe, as he has to encounter and be a bystander of much torture, cruelty and a sense of slavery that these station workers possess and fight for on a daily basis, highly focusing on the Inner and Outer Station or Central Station. • 6. Ductus Deferens Research Paper Ductus deferens The ductus deferens (otherwise known as the vas deferens) is a structure found in the male reproductive system. There are two ductus deferens and they are identical in their structure and function. The primary function of the ductus deferens is to store and transport sperm to the ejaculatory duct, connecting the epididymis, merging into the urethra pushing it forward and allowing the sperm to exit the body. The ductus deferens are designed for this function, characterised by thick muscular walls, which perform peristalsis. The inside wall consists of a moist folded layer of mucous membrane, which is further surrounded by three layers of circular and longitudinal muscle fibres. At the end of the ductus deferens are the ampulla, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The skin of the scrotum becomes wrinkled due to the underlying dartos muscle. The testes must be kept at temperature that is lower than 3oC, so that spermatogenesis can occur. The scrotum uses a muscle (the cremaster muscle) to achieve this. When the cremaster muscle shrinks, the testes move closer to the scrotum, and this increases the temperature of them. They can also be cooled down by dilating and moving away from the testes, dropping them in temperature. The testes receive their blood flow from the anterior and posterior scrotal artery. The venous blood flows through the testicular veins and then into the vena cava. Another function of the testes is to protect the testes from injury, hence why one testis hangs lower than the other, to avoid compression in the event of impact. Testes (Male gonads) The testes are two ovular organs found in the male reproductive system. They are held in place by a spermatic cord, which is a collection of vessels, nerves and ducts that run from more than one part of the testes. The testes function to create the hormone testosterone; a primary male sex hormone which generates the production of sperm. The seminiferous tubules which are located in the testes are responsible for the production of sperm cells, and the sperm made in this process line the tubules until they reach maturity and are released into the lumen of the seminiferous tubule. • 7. Characteristics Of Dialectical Behavior Therapy Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) was developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan in the 1980 s based on her biosocial theory of borderline personality disorder (BPD; Linehan, 1993a, 1993b). DBT utilizes a number of therapeutic techniques and skill development to target deficits in emotion regulation and monitoring affective states. An important underlying assumption of DBT is that emotionally vulnerable individuals learn maladaptive coping strategies (i.e., parasuicidal behaviours) as a way to mitigate strong emotional reactions. Therefore, DBT attempts to develop more adaptive coping strategies that encourage a person to build a life that they experience as worth living (Behavioral Tech, 2017). The fundamental components of traditional DBT are based upon cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance, and dialectics (Linehan, 1993a). DBT implements traditional CBT techniques that emphasize change, including skills training, exposure therapy, as well as cognitive and contingency therapy (Linehan, 1993b; Rathus Miller, 2002). However, Linehan et al. (1991) recognized that when clients were provided CBT alone, they often became distressed and dropped out of treatment. This dilemma led Linehan to identify that when there was a balance between change and validation, clients were far more likely to engage as well as remain in treatment (Linehan et al., 1991). Accordingly, validation and acceptance became another principal component of DBT, with a focus of developing a balance between ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Effects of the Plague on Fourteenth Century Europe and... The 14th century was an era of catastrophes. Some of them were man made, such as the Hundred Years War. However, there were two natural disasters either of which would have been enough to throw medieval Europe into real Dark Ages . The Black Death that followed on the heels of the Great Famine caused millions of deaths, and together they subjected the population of medieval Europe to tremendous struggles, leading many people to challenge old institutions and doubt traditional values. These calamities altered the path of European development in many areas. In his essay called An Essay on the Principle of Population , the English political economist Thomas Malthus (1766 1834), stated that since production increased arithmetically ... Caffa was probably not the only port the plague passed through en route to Europe, but it would forever be the place said to be where the pestilence originated. As soon as the citizens realized what horrible sickness had come from these ships, they expelled them from the port but it was too late. Hundreds of the ships rats had scurried down the mooring ropes tied to the docks. The fleas (Xenopsylla cheopis (oriental rat flea) that these infected vermin hosted were the real carriers of the disease. As the infected rats died off, the fleas would seek any other warm blooded host; which included man. There are no accounts of life in the besieged port, but there is enough information to suggest what Caffa s final days may have looked like. John Kelly writes, As the death toll mounted, the streets would have filled with feral animals feeding on human remains, drunken soldiers looting and raping, old women dragging corpses through rubble, and burning buildings spewing jets of flame and smoke into the Crimean sky. There would have been swarms of rodents with staggering gaits and a strange bloody froth around their snouts, piles of bodies staked like cordwood in public squares, and in every eye, a look of wild panic or dull resignation. Nursing education is designed to offer students the opportunity to become practitioners who are able to connect theories into practice in ways that result in quality patient care. Consequently, Nurse Educators are faced with the challenge of preparing students for the role of the graduate nurse, including not only the theoretical foundations of practice but the technical skills and performance behaviors necessary for their role in caring for patients with complex needs (Klein, 2006). Moreover, educators often apply a variety of learning theories that foster behavioral change, motivate and empower the nurse to form appropriate partnership with patients to promote quality care. Partnership in care shifts the focus to the patient as the expert and leader of his/her own health care while the nurse acts as a facilitator of health care. The purpose of this paper is to critically analyze how the application of transformative and social constructive learning theories impacts adult learning outcomes; and the resultant role in guiding nurses and patients to forge an effective partnership in care. Transformative Learning Theory Jack Mezirow is credited for developing transformative learning theory. This theory maintains that the manner in which learners understand their sense and skills is vital in developing meaning that supports learning (Instructionaldesign.org, 2014). Three years later, in 1991, Beauty and the Beast was an Oscar nominee for best picture, which showed how popular this genre had become (Elkins, 2003). After the art department has added colour and visual looks on figures and surfaces, three dimensional models are made on computers. Hinges are added to move the figures, and a character like Woody in Monster Inc. has as much as a hundred hinges in his face. After the models are made, they are dressed, to make a proper visualization. When making the shots, virtual cameras are used to record different scenes. Without the aid of the new technology, it would be impossible to achieve the same results. After the decision has been made on which virtual camera shot to use, the figures are animated to create the scene (Pixar, 2004a). At Pixar, they do not paint or draw the figures in the final stage, but use the ones already made. By using the hinges, the figures are controlled like puppeteers, creating movement and different emotions. This provides the movie makers with options they would not have without the new technology. Consequently, intervention was delayed. Moreover, Lincoln s ideas about ending slavery caused Britain to hesitate (Brauer). Two major reasons contributed to Britain seeking intervention as a result of the Battle at Antietam. First is the fact that America practiced slavery. In a letter from Secretary of State William H. Seward to Henry Adams 18 August 1862, Seward wrote, I cannot avoid thinking that the ideas of intervention and mediation have their source in an imperfect conception in Europe of the independence of the American Nation (Papers Relating to Foreign Affairs). It is important to remember that both Britain and France were anti slavery at the time. Slavery was viewed as one of America s most noticeable imperfections. Secondly, the cotton famine was severely affecting the British. When the Union captured New Orleans, cotton flow to Britain was still not returned as promised by Seward. Throughout the summer, pressure built for Britain and France to mediate a settlement, which would mean Confederate independence. The Paris Constitutionnel reported in June 1862 that only British intervention would end this bloody war (McPherson 57). To knock out the pathogenic gene in a therapeutic way all cells must be affected, for this the right dosage of the nuclease (Cas9) must be administered. The delicate part is determining the right dosage; if the dosage is too low not all cells will be affected and the pathogenic gene may still be functional. On the other hand, if the dosage is too high the nuclease may cut unspecific and knock out required genes, which can even result in losing the life of the patient [3]. For this reason scientists tend to focus on modifying human embryos instead of somatic cells (after birth). In doing so the number of cells can be determined beforehand and the dose can easier be optimized. The method will be applied during in vitro fertilization, more specifically in the post fertilization period of the zygote, just before implantation in the mother. After the treatment with nuclease, the cells can be screened for the presence of the pathogen gene [8]. As a result the child will live free of the disease. Although this sounds very promising, the use of genetically modifying therapeutics on embryos awakens many ethical concerns. The most conspicuous concern ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If people want to do drugs, they will find a way to acquire them, even if that means they have to socialize. Isolation is a result of people not wanting to socialize. The Movie The Shawshank Redemption This paper examines the relationship between the major motion picture, The Shawshank Redemption s (Darabont, 1994), main character, Andy Dufresne, and the first two andragogy assumptions of Malcolm S. Knowles (1980). Knowles assumptions are affirmed but also rebutted from other scholars throughout the document as Andy s actions are described and connected to the plot of the movie. Adult Learning in the Shawshank Redemption Malcolm Knowles professed the importance of an adult s life experiences and the close connection to the learning process (Knowles, 1980). Life experience adds an additional layer of resources the adult learner may draw upon when presented with new learning opportunities. When life experiences are integrated into a self directed learner, substantial learning can occur. Andy Dufresne, the main character in the motion picture, The Shawshank Redemption (Darabont, 1994), experienced an evolution of adult learning as he was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. During his nineteen years in the Shawshank Prison, Andy, an exceptionally intelligent banker, continued to possess an independent self concept as he adapted and transformed his learning, self directing his own escape. Knowles Assumptions and Rebuttals One of the six assumptions from Malcolm Knowles theory on adult learning stated the following, 1. As a person matures, his or her self concept moves from that of a dependent personality toward one of a self directing human being (Merriam, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Abstract Background: Low back pain patients with associated leg pain symptoms generally have a poorer prognostic outcome compared to those with localised low back pain. Therefore, this study will investigate the difference in clinical outcomes associated with low back pain patients with and without self reported leg pain symptoms. This study will also address if additional co factors such as age, sex, and occupation have an effect on the severity of these clinical outcomes. The clinical outcomes which will be considered are pain rating, interference with active daily living (ADL) rating, anxiety rating, depression rating and control of pain rating. Methods: This retrospective cohort study compares adult low back pain patients with localised pain (n = 58) to low back pain patients with self reported leg pain symptoms (n = 54) who presented for chiropractic treatment. Patients completed the WIOC patient outcomes questionnaire as baseline which consisted of the Bournemouth Questionnaire, recording responses from an 11 point numerical scale (NRS). Demographic information was also collected. Differences between the two groups using the data collected from this questionnaire were calculated using the Mann Whitney U test. Differences between age and sex were also calculated using the test used. Body weight = body fat + lean body mass Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the rate at which calories are burned when a person sitting quietly at rest (Kaplan, Sallis, and Patterson, page 415). Common Views of Weight Crawford and Campbell (1999) found that common definitions of weight differ drastically from medically accepted BMI values. In this study, 1342 participants (666 men and 676 women) completed surveys in which they defined ideal weight and the term overweight. The average BMI value that women considered ideal was 22.7 and the average ideal BMI value for men was 24.9. Medically, a BMI value of 25 is considered overweight. In the study, however, women defined an average BMI value of 23.7 as overweight and men defined an average BMI value of 26.1 as overweight. The BMI values for ideal weight and overweight increased in both sexes with the participants ages and current weights. In summary, men and women often do not have realistic images of their ideal weight and/or being overweight. This fact can create a problem when men and women strive for unrealistic weight goals.
