A Hands-on Introduction on Terraform Best Concepts and Best Practices Nebulaworks
At our OC DevOps Meetup, we invited Rami Al-Ghami, a Sr. Software engineer at Workday to deliver a presentation on a Hands-On Terraform Best Concepts and Best Practices.
The software lifecycle does not end when the developer packages their code and makes it ready for deployment. The delivery of this code is an integral part of shipping a product. Infrastructure orchestration and resource configuration should follow a similar lifecycle (and process) to that of the software delivered on it. In this talk, Rami will discuss how to use Terraform to automate your infrastructure and software delivery.

Monitoring tools record the result of what happened to your web application when a problem arises, but for some classes of problems, monitoring systems are only a starting point. Sometimes it is necessary to take more intrusive steps to plan for the unexpected by embedding mechanisms that will allow you to interact with a live deployed web application and extract even more detailed information.

Test-Driven Infrastructure with Puppet, Test Kitchen, Serverspec and RSpecMartin Etmajer
The goal of Continuous Delivery is, briefly, to get features into your users' or customers' hands as quickly and confidently as possible. In order to succeed, Development and Operations teams need to align and come up with both working and deployable software in short, regular intervals. Chef, Puppet, Ansible & Co. enable teams to code up application runtime environments, but alone do not allow for building quality into their processes. In this presentation I will show how you can apply the "Red, Green, Refactor Cycle" of Test-Driven Development and combine it with your configuration management or orchestration tool of choice in order to come up with better infrastructure that can automatically be tested using Puppet, Test Kitchen, Docker, Serverspec and RSpec.

London Hashicorp Meetup #8 - Testing Programmable Infrastructure By Matt LongOpenCredo
With Hashicorp tools like Terraform, Packer and Vagrant, programmable infrastructure is reaching widespread adoption. However, although automated testing of software is becoming ever more common, the same cannot be said with testing programmable infrastructure. With microservices making our deployments more and more complex, we can no longer afford to ignore this type of testing. This talk will cover some experiences we have had testing the programmable infrastructure of complex applications, especially Terraform, and the lessons we have learned.

DCSF19 Container Security: Theory & Practice at NetflixDocker, Inc.
Michael Wardrop, Netflix
Usage of containers has undergone rapid growth at Netflix and it is still accelerating. Our container story started organically with developers downloading Docker and using it to improve their developer experience. The first production workloads were simple batch jobs, pioneering micro-services followed, then status as a first class platform running critical workloads.
As the types of workloads changed and their importance increased, the security of our container ecosystem needed to evolve and adapt. This session will cover some security theory, architecture, along with practical considerations, and lessons we learnt along the way.
At Tuenti, we do two code pushes per week, sometimes modifying thousands of files and running thousands of automated tests and build operations before, to ensure not only that the code works but also that proper localization is applied, bundles are generated and files get deployed to hundreds of servers as fast and reliable as possible.
We use opensource tools like Mercurial, MySQL, Jenkins, Selenium, PHPUnit and Rsync among our own in-house ones, and have different development, testing, staging and production environments.
We had to fight with problems like statics bundling and versioning, syntax errors and of course the fact that we have +100 engineers working on the codebase, sometimes merging and releasing more than a dozen branches the same day. We also switched from Subversion to Mercurial to obtain more flexibility and faster branching operations.
With this talk we will explain the process of how code changes in ourcode repository end up in live code, detailing some practices and tips that we apply.
Oscon London 2016 - Docker from Development to ProductionPatrick Chanezon
Docker revolutionized how developers and operations teams build, ship, and run applications, enabling them to leverage the latest advancements in software development: the microservice architecture style, the immutable infrastructure deployment style, and the DevOps cultural model.
Existing software layers are not a great fit to leverage these trends. Infrastructure as a service is too low level; platform as a service is too high level; but containers as a service (CaaS) is just right. Container images are just the right level of abstraction for DevOps, allowing developers to specify all their dependencies at build time, building and testing an artifact that, when ready to ship, is the exact thing that will run in production. CaaS gives ops teams the tools to control how to run these workloads securely and efficiently, providing portability between different cloud providers and on-premises deployments.
Patrick Chanezon offers a detailed overview of the latest evolutions to the Docker ecosystem enabling CaaS: standards (OCI, CNCF), infrastructure (runC, containerd, Notary), platform (Docker, Swarm), and services (Docker Cloud, Docker Datacenter). Patrick ends with a demo showing how to do in-container development of a Spring Boot application on a Mac running a preconfigured IDE in a container, provision a highly available Swarm cluster using Docker Datacenter on a cloud provider, and leverage the latest Docker tools to build, ship, and run a polyglot application architected as a set of microservices—including how to set up load balancing.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
