Choosing a Brand Name
A good brand name communicated something to the customers. Brand name can
be the company’s most valuable asset, differentiating the company’s products
and services. The qualities of a good brand name are: Meaningful, distinctive,
accessible, and visual.
Shortlisting the correct name for your brand can be a daunting task. Here’s a step-
by-step guide for choosing a brand name:
1. Work with your core identity: Before finding a suitable name for yourself, it
is important to understand who you are and what you are trying to do. This
is ‘core identity’ which includes:
• Vision: Why your company exists
• Mission: What your company does
• Values: How you do what you do
Once you know the above understand your differentiators by analyzing the
competition.
2. Brainstorm: This is the step where you gather all your stakeholders and
creatives to come up with names. Challenge yourself to come up with
names in different categories. While coining names you can play along in
different categories like Acronym, Founder name, fabricated, descriptive
etc.
3. Vet your brand name: There’s no point in taking a name that’s already been
taken, so you need to vet your shortlisted names.
Narrow the brainstormed list to your favorites, then search the patent and
trademark office’s database. If your name is available get a legal team to
work on vetting it.
4. Test: Once you’ve cleared the legal hurdle, you get to create your mockups
(think logos, product packaging, and homepages), and test your top three
