~A printing press is any form of technology that applies pressure between an inked surface and a
print medium (like paper or cloth)
~The first industrial printing press was successfully made by a German called Friedrich Koenig.
~Typically used for texts, the invention and global spread of the printing press was one of the most influential
events in the second millennium.
1840S/50S~PRINT MEDIA
~The Illustrated London News, founded in 1842, was the world's first illustrated weekly newspaper. Mason
Jackson, its art editor for thirty years, published in 1885 “The Pictorial Press”, a history of illustrated
newspapers.
~The Daily Telegraph was first published on 29 June 1855 and was owned by Arthur Sleigh, who transferred it to
Joseph Levy the following year. Levy produced it as the first penny newspaper in London. His son, Edward
Lawson soon became editor, a post he held until 1885.

3. 1880~SILENT FILMS
~The technology for silent films was invented around 1860, but remained a novelty until around 1880 - 1900,
when films on a single reel became easily produced.
~In the 1800’s, many inventors, such as Thomas Edison and the Lumiere Brothers worked on machines that
projected images so they were seen as the first creators of silent movies.
~This was beneficial because it provided entertainment and was something new for everyone but they also
still needed improvement as they were black and white.
1876~THE FIRST TELEPHONE
~Alexander Graham Bell was awarded the first U.S. patent for the invention of the telephone in 1876.
~The First Telephone Call was on March 10, 1876 by the inventor (Alexander Graham Bell)
~The telephone was the first proper form of quick, live communication so it was highly rated and extremely popular.,
so then
telephones grew quickly, from one phone in 1876 to 11 million phones nationwide by 1915, only in the US
4. 1880/90S~PHOTOGRAPHS
~In 1884, a man named George Eastman created the first camera film in roll form to be seen as
usable and working.
~In 1888, he perfected the Kodak Black camera, which was the first camera designed to use roll
film.
~In 1889 he started selling film stock, causing him to become the leading supplier of film stock
internationally by 1896. ~ ~He incorporated his company under the name Eastman Kodak, in 1892.

~He sent and received the first radio signal in 1895.
~By 1899 he flashed the first wireless signal across the English channel.

~The first transmission of images using a tv-like device occurred in 1925
~Philo Farnsworth developed the first electronic television in 1927, and the
first TV station broadcast the following year.
~TVs were brought into homes in 1936. They started off in black and white and
then moved to colour.
~They benefitted people as they allowed media to be shown to hundreds more
people

~In 1903, Harmsworth started the first modern tabloid newspaper-The Daily Mirror. It was
based in London.
~It presented crime stories, human tragedies, celebrity gossip, sports, comics and puzzles.
~BY 1909, it was selling 1 million copies, which shows how the media industry changed
from this as it was something that was new,fun and more modern for the public
6. 1927~TALKING MOVIES
1963~SPECIAL EFFECTS
~The first film to officially be classed as a talking movie was called The Jazz Singer and was
released in October of 1927.
~It was made with Vitaphone which was seen as the leading brand of sound-on-disc technology
at this time.
~By the early 1930s, talking movies were a global success. They created huge development in
the media industry as they were extremely popular and are still used today.
~Special effects actually started a lot earlier than this,from times as early as 1857 but in 1963 a film named Jason
and the Arganoughts was created.
~This film used lots of special effects and was one of the first films to properly use them.
~Harryhausen- The visual affect master- was inspired by special effects from a young age.
~This film is said to have started the proper use of special effects in film industry and is the reason why we have
films such as star wars and avengers now.
~This shows how special effects are used thoroughly in the media and film industry and have developed from this.
7. 1976~COMPUTERS
1975~DIGITAL CAMERAS
~In 1976, Apple released the first desktop computer which was known as the Apple 1.
~It was designed and hand built by a man named Steve Wozniak, but the idea of selling came from his friend, Steve
Jobs. Steve is now well known for being the co-founder of the brand Apple.
~They weren't popular straight away due to the price and the bulkiness of the product but soon after they became
popular.

~Digital cameras were invented in 1975 by Steven Sasson. He worked for the company which is still known today
as kodak.
~The image would be recorded into a cassette tape which took 23 seconds.
~All images were black and white.

8. 1977-78~PERSONAL COMPUTERS
~The first of several personal computers were released in 1977.
~There were several firms racing to introduce the first successfully individual use computer.
~These firms were known as the 1977 trinity. The three machines that were released and most popular, were the
Apple II,PET 2001 and the TRS-80.
~Although they were all around $600, they were very popular. Apples computer sold 2.1 million, TRS-80 sold 1.5
million and the PET was least popular and sold under 1 mil.
1970-90S~POPULAR RADIO STATIONS
~BBC was one of the first radios to launch. Nine local stations launched by BBC in 1970.
~Kiss radio station is now very popular. It first aired in October 1985 as a pirate radio station. It aired as a legal
station in September 1990.
~One of the main big radios which was called Galaxy Radio but better known now as Capital FM,was launched in
1990 in Bristol. It became a rival to the city's GWR FM station.
~In 1994, one of its sister stations Heart began broadcasting. It became the Uk`s third independent regional radio
station.
~The overall use of radio was beneficial for the media industry as it created more advertisement.
9. 1973~MOBILE PHONES
~The worlds first mobile phone call was made on April 3

1973 by a senior engineer at motorola
called Martin Cooper.
~The very first mobile phones were not really mobile phones at all. They were two-way radios that
allowed people like taxi drivers and the emergency services to communicate.
1970-90S THE BIG 4 TECHNOLOGY
COMPANIES
~The very popular search engine Google was invented by computer scientists Larry Page and Sergey Brin in
September 1998.
~Apple was created in 1976,Amazon in 1994 and Facebook in 2004.
~These were all beneficial as they were all new ways of using technology and the internet.
10. 2001~PERSONAL MEDIA PLAYERS
~In October of 2001, Apple released the ‘iPod Shuffle’. It was the smallest model in all
of Apples items.
~The iPod Nano was then released in 2005, followed by the iPod touch in 2013.
~They were an extension of the Walkman and the Discman.
~The ipods were popular as it was a new concept of downloading music.
~The iPod touch was especially popular as it did more than just music. There was
also a digital camera on it as well as games and the internet.
