Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

- 3. Open the email, click link to timesheet
- 4. Sign in to your Google Account The email ihap admin uses to share the Timesheet must be the same email associated with your Google Account. If this is not a gmail account, you may have to sign in to your Google Account.
- 5. Your Timesheet Clicking the link in your email, and being signed in to your Google Account, sho uld take you to your Timesheet
- 6. Accessing Timesheet After your timesheet has been shared by ihap admin, you can always access it from your Google Account by clicking Documents
- 7. Entering Hours and Tasks Click the Hours field for the appropriate date and enter the hours you volunteered. Click in the Tasks field and enter a description of what you did for the day. Timesheet keeps a Weekly Total
- 8. Two Weeks per Sheet Each sheet contains two weeks. Each week begins on Sunday. Continue to enter your hours and tasks on the days you volunteer.
- 9. Access Second Sheet A tab for Timesheet Page 2 is at the bottom of the document. Click this tab to go to weeks three and four of the month.
- 10. Weeks Three and Four Enter your time and tasks as you did on Page 1 of the Timesheet.
- 11. Last Week of Month Page Three contains the last week of the current month. It continues into the next month, as well. Do NOT enter your hours for next month on this Timesheet.
- 12. Saving and Printing Timesheet After completing Timesheet for month. Go to File menu and download as a PDF.
- 13. Select These Options to Export Select the options indicated to export all pages of the Timesheet.
- 14. Open PDF to Print Click on the PDF icon located on the bottom left corner of Chrome. After opening, print and sign all three pages and give to Kristi. You can now save the PDF to a flash drive or email for your records.
