Japanese is the official language of Japan and belongs to the Japonic language family. It is written using three separate writing systems: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Shinto and Buddhism are Japan's two major religions that have coexisted for centuries. End-to-end pipeline agility - Berlin Buzzwords 2024
We describe how we achieve high change agility in data engineering by eliminating the fear of breaking downstream data pipelines through end-to-end pipeline testing, and by using schema metaprogramming to safely eliminate boilerplate involved in changes that affect whole pipelines.
A quick poll on agility in changing pipelines from end to end indicated a huge span in capabilities. For the question "How long time does it take for all downstream pipelines to be adapted to an upstream change," the median response was 6 months, but some respondents could do it in less than a day. When quantitative data engineering differences between the best and worst are measured, the span is often 100x-1000x, sometimes even more.
A long time ago, we suffered at Spotify from fear of changing pipelines due to not knowing what the impact might be downstream. We made plans for a technical solution to test pipelines end-to-end to mitigate that fear, but the effort failed for cultural reasons. We eventually solved this challenge, but in a different context. In this presentation we will describe how we test full pipelines effectively by manipulating workflow orchestration, which enables us to make changes in pipelines without fear of breaking downstream.
Making schema changes that affect many jobs also involves a lot of toil and boilerplate. Using schema-on-read mitigates some of it, but has drawbacks since it makes it more difficult to detect errors early. We will describe how we have rejected this tradeoff by applying schema metaprogramming, eliminating boilerplate but keeping the protection of static typing, thereby further improving agility to quickly modify data pipelines without fear.

- 2. Japanese (日本語 "Nihon-go"in Japanese) is the official language ofJapan,in East Asia. Japanese belongs to the Japonic language family,which also includes the endangered Ryukyuan languages.One theory says Japanese and Korean are related,but mostlinguists no longer think so. Other theories aboutthe origin of Japanese are thatit related to the Austronesian languages,the Dravidian languages,or the controversial Altaic language family.Interestingly,a different term is used for Japanese as a course ofstudy by citizens: it is "kokugo" (国語), which means national language.Nonetheless,Japanese is still referred to as 日 本語 by the Japanese. Japanese uses three separate writing systems:hiragana,katakana,and kanji.The first two are phonetic systems and so show the pronunciation of Japanese words,and kanji is the Japanese variation of Chinese characters and show the meaning of Japanese words.The three systems are used interchangeably,and all three systems can often be found in the same sentence.The three systems are each reserved for differentpurposes. Shinto and Buddhism are Japan's two major religions. Shinto is as old as the Japanese culture, while Buddhism was imported from the mainland in the 6th century. Since then, the two religions have been co-existing relatively harmoniously and have even complemented each other to a certain degree. The Ainu or the Aynu (Ainu: アィヌ, Aynu, Аину; Japanese: アイヌ,Ainu; Russian: Áйны,Áĭny), also known as the Ezo (蝦夷) in historical Japanese texts, are an East Asian ethnic group indigenous to Japan, the original inhabitants of Hokkaidō[6] (and formerly North-Eastern Honshū) and Russia (Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands,Khabarovsk Krai and the Kamchatka Peninsula).[7][8][9] Official estimates place the total Ainu population of Japan at 25,000. Unofficial estimates place the total population at200,000 or higher,as the near-total assimilation ofthe Ainu into Japanese societyhas resulted in manyindividuals with Ainu heritage having no knowledge oftheir ancestry.[1]
