Tibetan Buddhism outlines three bardos, or stages of the afterlife, to help the dying person transition. The first bardo occurs at the moment of death, where enlightened beings may be encountered. The second bardo is a period driven by the individual's desires, where good thoughts bring pleasure and bad thoughts bring pain. The third bardo is reincarnation into other realms like heaven, hell, hungry ghosts, demigods, or animals depending on one's karma. These realms provide lessons rather than being permanent destinations.
