- Thought leader is a term first coined in 1994 by Joel Kurtzman, was the Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Business Review and founding Editor-in-Chief of Strategy + Business magazine, where he first coined the term.It has since evolved into a catch phrase describing someone who is supposed to have progressive and innovative ideas.
