Thomas Tomkins was an English composer during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He was a prominent member of the English Madrigal School and last member of the Virginalist School. Tomkins wrote keyboard music, consort music, madrigals, anthems, and liturgical music. He had a conservative compositional style and was prolific in writing verse anthems. Tomkins worked with William Byrd and Orlando Gibbons at the Chapel Royal and his career was impacted by the English Civil War.
