Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) was the third president of the United States and played a major role in drafting the Declaration of Independence. He spoke five languages and was strongly influenced by Enlightenment thinkers from Europe. Jefferson also founded the University of Virginia and advocated for the separation of church and state.
