Cascon 2016 Keynote: Disrupting Developer Productivity One Bot at a Time
Conversational bots have become a popular addition to many mainstream platforms and software engineering has adopted them at an almost dizzying pace across every phase of the development life cycle. Bots reportedly help developers become more productive by automating tedious tasks, by bringing awareness of important project or community activities, and by reducing interruptions. Developers "talk to" and "listen to" these bots in the same conversational channels they use to collaborate with and monitor each other. However, the actual impact these bots have on developer productivity and project quality is still unclear. In this talk, I will give an overview of how bots play a prominent role in software development and discuss the benefits and challenges that can arise from relying on these "new virtual team members". I will also explore how bots may influence other knowledge work domains and propose a number of future directions for practitioners and researchers to consider.

Teaser Advertising - Why Do Brands Use Them & When Will They Be Successful?

A text mining system must go way beyond indexing and search to appear truly intelligent. First, it should understand language beyond keyword matching (for example, distinguishing between “Jane has the flu,” “Jane may have the flu,” “Jane is concerned about the flu," “Jane’s sister has the flu, but she doesn’t,” or “Jane had the flu when she was 9” is of critical importance). This is a natural language processing problem. Second, it should “read between the lines” and make likely inferences even if they’re not explicitly written (for example, if Jane has had a fever, a headache, fatigue, and a runny nose for three days, not as part of an ongoing condition, then she likely has the flu). This is a semi-supervised machine learning problem. And third, it should automatically learn the right contextual inferences to make (for example, learning on its own that fatigue is (sometimes) a flu symptom—only because it appears in many diagnosed patients—without a human ever explicitly stating that rule). This is an association-mining problem, which can be tackled via deep learning or via more guided machine-learning techniques.
This is a live demo of an end-to-end system that makes nontrivial clinical inferences from free-text patient records and provides real-time inferencing at scale. The architecture is built out of open source big data components: Kafka and Spark Streaming for real-time data ingestion and processing, Spark for modeling, and Titan and Elasticsearch for enabling low-latency access to results. The data science components include a UIMA pipeline with custom annotators, machine-learning models for implicit inferences, and dynamic ontologies based on deep learning with Word2Vec for representing and learning new relationships between concepts. Source code is publicly available to enable you to hack away on your own.

In February 2014, Kevin Hiatt joined the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as Senior Vice President of Safety and Flight operations. In that position, he is responsible for five divisions and over 100 team members providing safety, operational, audit, quality, air traffic, and data support and information.
Kevin joins IATA from the Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) where he was appointed President and CEO in 2013, having joined FSF in 2010 as Executive Vice President. Kevin previously served as Vice President for Corporate Safety and Security for World Airways, and was with Delta Air Lines for 26 years in various positions, including Chief Pilot at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Pilot Crew Base from 2002 to late 2005.
Chris Markou is working on Airline Operations Cost Management and Efficiency Improvement, exploring various cost reduction opportunities, efficiencies and synergies between the different airline functions. Chris has initiated the “Paperless Aircraft Operations” industry Think Tank to innovate the Airline Maintenance Operations through acceptance of new technologies and electronic acceptance of current paper functions. He is the Secretary to IATA’s Maintenance Cost Task Force (MCTF), the Airline Cost Management Group (ACMG) and the Aircraft Leasing Advisory Group (ALAG).
Before joining IATA, Chris worked at Delta Air Lines in the Technical Operations (TechOps) Division. He developed the strategic framework in expanding TechOps into one of the leading airline MROs. Throughout his tenure at Delta he held various positions including Manager for Business Development and General Manager for Technical Sales – Marketing – Customer Service.
Before joining Delta, he was an Assistant Professor at Emory University and Research Professor at Georgia Tech. Chris holds graduate degrees from Georgia Tech (MS and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering) and from Emory University’s Business School (Executive MBA). Speakers
In February 2014, Kevin Hiatt joined the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as Senior Vice President of Safety and Flight operations. In that position, he is responsible for five divisions and over 100 team members providing safety, operational, audit, quality, air traffic, and data support and information.
Kevin joins IATA from the Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) where he was appointed President and CEO in 2013, having joined FSF in 2010 as Executive Vice President. Kevin previously served as Vice President for Corporate Safety and Security for World Airways, and was with Delta Air Lines for 26 years in various positions, including Chief Pilot at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Pilot Crew Base from 2002 to late 2005.
Chris Markou is working on Airline Operations Cost Management and Efficiency Improvement, exploring various cost reduction opportunities, efficiencies and synergies between the different airline functions. Chris has initiated the “Paperless Aircraft Operations” industry Think Tank to innovate the Airline Maintenance Operations through acceptance of new technologies and electronic acceptance of current paper functions. He is the Secretary to IATA’s Maintenance Cost Task Force (MCTF), the Airline Cost Management Group (ACMG) and the Aircraft Leasing Advisory Group (ALAG).
Before joining IATA, Chris worked at Delta Air Lines in the Technical Operations (TechOps) Division. He developed the strategic framework in expanding TechOps into one of the leading airline MROs. Throughout his tenure at Delta he held various positions including Manager for Business Development and General Manager for Technical Sales – Marketing – Customer Service.
Before joining Delta, he was an Assistant Professor at Emory University and Research Professor at Georgia Tech. Chris holds graduate degrees from Georgia Tech (MS and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering) and from Emory University’s Business School (Executive MBA). She will walk you through the steps she followed to adapt her design process for voice, while also sharing best practices in voice design.

The Future Friendly Campus
Social media and mobile devices have combined to help create the always-with-us, always-on, always-connected campus. Not just student-to-student but, importantly, institution/faculty/staff-to-student as well as staff-to-staff. We need to look beyond the silo-ed, one-way web sites of the past towards more personal, two-way applications that take advantage of this sea change on campus. The ways in which our users will want to interact with us, the types of tasks they’ll want to complete, and the types of devices we’ll want to deliver to will just continue to proliferate.
Now is the time to reevaluate.
Using lessons learned at a large land-grant institution we’ll look at what the future friendly campus might look like, ways to plant the seed of that change and tips on how to accomplish it.
