Plato believed that education was essential for developing virtuous citizens and leaders for his ideal state. He established his own school, the Academy, to provide education according to his philosophical views. Plato thought education should be controlled by the state and aimed at physical, mental and moral development. He advocated a rigorous educational curriculum with stages of primary education focused on play, followed by higher education in subjects like mathematics, philosophy and physical training to ultimately produce the ideal "philosopher-king" ruler.
